I wish I could have seen Oscar Robertson play LIVE in high school and college. I've been following Russell Westbrook's triple double prowess this season and some of the stuff he is doing isn't even within half of what Oscar did.
 
I'll never forget in the early 50's when I'd visit my grandparents who lived @ 1311 1st Ave...just a 1/2 block from Gerstmeyer's Gymnasium front door, and my Viking Coal miner grandpa talked about "the Attucks," as if it was a life-threatening disease about to attack TH. One thing about Howard Sharpe...he scheduled the BEST, regardless of color!

***Keep in mind that Brown v. Board of Ed. (Topeka, KS) didn't happen until 1954!

The next time you're in The Haute, look up Dr Don Layton from ISU's history department -- he squared off vs. Robertson in H.S.; as I recall, he was 'proud to hold Oscar to only 30...'
