Terre Haute (and surrounding area) road construction projects

Interesting, because the 2015 Deed Transfer shows that the Fire Dept. owned the property:

That is interesting. Maybe they owned the land and not building. It's always possible that whoever told me that didn't know what they were talking about. I believe I was told that story at the Sandcut station which is operated by the same folks as the one in NTH and in Burnett.

The O.C. Fire Dept built that structure using volunteer labor in 1968 @ $40,000. The land was donated by Dr. Gerrish, who's home/ofc was around the corner just NW of the bridge on Clinton St. (see P110, "Pictorial History of Otter Creek Twp," Judy Calvert, 1994).

At some point this week they are supposed to shut down the bridge on SR 63 NB that goes over US 41 SB up by Maple Ave. Everyone is going to have to do a U Turn at Florida Ave at a temporary stop light it appears if they want to take 63 towards Clintucky.

Already done this morning. One of two near misses I had on my way home from town. Both the results of road construction, lack of signage and morons. You would think with all the great schools in Terre Haute, there wouldn’t be so many idiots there.

INDOT is up to their latest shenanigans again. The interchange at US 41 and Clinton Street north of NTH is going to become an intersection with U Turns, because Indiana doesn't want to spend the money to replace the Clinton Street bridge. If anyone has drove to Vincennes lately they have two similar intersections in Oaktown on 41.

Frankly I think it is pathetic that they won't just replace the bridge. The state keeps raising the gas tax on all of us, but it seems like they don't want to spend any of that money on the roads unless it somehow benefits Indianapolis (I-69/SR 37 to Bloomington; US 31 freeway to Kokomo; SR 37 expressway through Fishers).

The only improvement I have seen so far is this. The chance for an accident will be reduced if you are turning south off Evans. The traffic will be southbound only. It will be more difficult to cross northbound 41 on Evans because of the increased traffic. The removal of the hills at each end of the bridge should however improve line of sight.

Thankfully you have the wrong interchange. There is actually a road called Clinton Street that used to be US 41. It reconnects to US 41 at an interchange north of a town called North Terre Haute. If you continued to follow US 41 north for about 5 miles from where you're thinking of you'd come up on it.

Back in the day US 41 used to follow 7th Street through Terre Haute, then Lafayette Avenue which turns into Clinton St. SR 63 actually used to run concurrent with US 41 from Hulman Street all the way up to present SR 163 in Lyford where it crossed into Clinton. SR 63 then ran up to Carbondale, IN where it reconnected with 41.

Whenever Indiana decided to 4 lane US 41 across the state, they apparently decided that building west of the Wabash from Carbondale to Terre Haute along SR 63 was easier than rebuilding present day US 41. I've heard that Attica really fought hard to keep the US 41 designation running through their town and that's why they never switched the numbers around. The 63 / 41 thing is definitely weird.

Since we're on the SR 63 subject, I'm not sure why INDOT has never routed US 150 over to present day SR 63 from New Goshen. They have that tunnel under a railroad on 150 that trucks can't even get under just north of West T. All it would take is less than 1 mile of road to connect 150 to 63.

OK, that makes more sense. I know where you are talking about now. If time allows, I sometimes take US 41 up through Rockville and Attica for a change of scenery. I knew 41 used to run up 7th and Lafayette. If I remember correctly, there are a few old motels before you run back into 41 going up Clinton Street.

Attica is much too small to have a say over the routing of the highway. I am sure there is a lot more traffic going between Evansville, Terre Haute and the Region than people living in Attica. The routes should serve the greater good, and that would be the same number on the primary highway.

Basically what I have read in the past is that Attica was fighting to get the 4 lane highway to come to their town, but that they decided to give up the fight as long as they didn't lose the US 41 designation. Reading online it appears that they twinned 41 / 63 across the state in the 60's. At this point if they switched the numbers around (or gave current 41 an X41 number) it might cause even more confusion, particularly among the locals. And I'm sure Attica, Veedersburg, and Rockville would still fight hard to this day to keep the "US HWY" designation.

In a lot of ways it was similar to how everyone was fighting over I-69 not too long ago, or in the case of Bloomington fighting against it. Back in the 60's having a "US" designation was viewed as the path to success, and now it's all about having an "Interstate" designation.
