The All-MVC Level
Just so sad...it was Curt Mallory's for the taking if he could have just gotten above .500 here and been one of the 4-5 MVFC teams that make the playoffs every once in a while--maybe like a Youngstown or SIU. Even with that moderate level of success I bet IU would have taken him as the story of having Bill Mallory's son coaching would have sold a lot of tickets.

Would've been a heck of a story....

I'm no IU fan by any means, but I don't really get why they suck so bad every year in football. I've been to Bloomington more times than I count and they have a beautiful football stadium there. Obviously IU has a ton of money coming in from everywhere like from it's 49K students, its athletics, the Big Ten, and its hospital system; so clearly money isn't the problem either. Hilariously even with Big Ten money they probably couldn't even win the MVFC or even the MAC most years. The only explanation I can think of is that their fans and alumni only care about men's basketball program and nothing else. Not sure who they will hire, but I doubt it will matter much. If it wasn't for the huge paycut they'd have to take I'd say IU and Purdue would be much better fits in the Big 12.

IU's best years under Bill Mallory were usually 8-4 and some second-tier bowl. Good by their standards, but I don't think his son coming along would do much to excite the fanbase. I never understood why it was enough to excite some of ours.

I think most ISU fans other than the ones who want to end the program would be thrilled with that record. It would have us in the playoffs with possibly a deep run.

the chances of a longtime big ten member (iu) and a charter member (purdue) whose president was the impetus for CREATING the conference are slim and none.

Bill Mallory has nothing to do with ISU. I referenced his record to point out that IU fans wouldn't be rushing to games just because Curt became their coach. He actually had an overall losing record at IU and his teams were often pretty bad in conference play. But that's for IU fans to remember and worry about because Bill going 8-4 a few times never meant his son would.

I was excited to have him come here because I figured he had learned something from his dad. If he could have duplicated his dad's success I think most fans would be happy. There are a few on here whose worst nightmare would be us winning.

And he gets bought out for $15M likely paid for by a pissed off Alum football booster to ride off into the sunset. There isn't one person on this board that can honestly say they would not be grinning ear to ear to get that offer from their employer.

Doubtful! Clink is the only guy who thinks he can coach.

Had Curt not been so hardheaded about how to run an offense he might have been successful.
If its really true he had a very young kid in charge of recruiting he might have had better players to coach.
Commitment to your beliefs can be a great thing, until it isn't ...........and shows basic failures as the outcome.

You just cannot equate total records at traditional also ran programs with the quality of the coaching. Taking over IU after a coach has been fired most often meant that you were in a big hole talent-wise and resource-wise. With the portal, the job is now infinitely more difficult.

My favorite coach is Wake Forest's Dave Clawson who was coach at the University of Richmond when I lived in Virginia. His overall record is right at 0.500. Why? Because he has resurrected four different programs and goes somewhere between 1-11 and 3-9 the first two seasons. Then hits 0.500 for a season and then moves up to 9-3 to 10-2 with superior coaching and still slightly below average talent. You would say he is a below average coach because his record for his 20+ year career hovers at 0.500 even now. Well, it is a bit difficult at Wake to beat Clemson, FSU, Notre Dame, UNC and other ranked teams it plays. Wake gave him a 10 year contract extension to make sure anyone who poaches him will pay a lot. Of course, with Sam Hartmann choosing to leave and to play for Notre Dame, Wake was left in a bit of a lurch and dropped a lot in offensive output and lost a bucketful of close games. Did the coaching suddenly get worse?

This analogy extends to IU. If Bent20 parks his/her evident hostility for a while, you might appreciate what Bill Mallory accomplished at IU.

Bill Mallory took over a dumpster fire at IU and went 4-18 his first two seasons.

During the core of his career at IU he was 18 games over 0.500. I attended many of those games and during the last few seasons the highly irrational IU fans were upset with 8-4 seasons thinking they should be dominating the Big 10. IU fans generally get the FB program they deserve and undermined Mallory's success which led to two bad seasons to end his time there. I can remember sitting in the stands the last few years and listening to 'good' IU fans complaining about "Run it Up The Middle Mallory" and his lack of a creative offense. This was while watching IU go nose to nose with Penn State or a championship quality Northwestern team and lose a close game. IU ran him off after undermining him and ISU did the same thing to Tim McGuire who had a very competitive team but went 4-7 or 5-6 most years. After he was gone, 1-2 win seasons became the norm.

Lee Corso had a similar experience at IU. Had IU in the top half of the real Big 10 for several years in a row, but fans became dissatisfied with those 4th and 5th place finishes. Starting 5-27-1 after three seasons, he went 5 games under 0.500 over the next.

Perhaps IU should have just kept TH South's Cam Cameron forever, that would have kept a lot of folks on this board happy.

There are problems within the ISU program related to too many turnovers and not enough offensive production. But, some progress was made in terms of TOP, but it didn't lead to enough points.

ISU had, at one point, the #1 SOS in FCS. It did prove more than the team could handle, but it fought game after game. Outside of TH, the media comments were noting how competitive ISU was despite its poorer than expected record.

Would have to be a dream for it to happen.
