Any ideas on what their new nickname should be? How about the Valpo "Basketball Team" 😆?

Par for the course for Valpo; in 1942, they changed their mascot to "Crusaders" when their previous nickname (Uhlans) had been co-opted / associated with the Nazis...

Believe they were commonly referred to as "Lutherans," before adopting Uhlans in 1931

If Valpo is looking for a Mascot, we could always give them Slammin' Sam our Blue Woke Squirrel...cuz that's what our Squirrel Mascot represents is 40+ years of Cancel Culture. So maybe if we could pawn off the Squirrel, we could try to get a mascot in a costume, that looks like a Tree. I mean if Wichita State can create a Mascot representing a shock of wheat, we can surely create one representing a Sycamore Tree.

There was a Sycamore Tree mascot and then the Jerry Huntsman-led hippies and yippies "decided" that Indiana State should have an American Indian as a mascot, and an incorrect for the region/area American Indian mascot...

FWIW -- the early Sycamore Tree mascot was a target of "abuse" by every canine-related mascot of a rival school.... I believe imagery exists of dog mascots lifting their leg next to the Sycamore Tree mascot

This would never be acceptable by the current Biden "environmental czar"...besides, wouldn't the damn "squirrel" likely be domiciled in the "Tree?"

I believe our mascot is officially listed as a "non-gender specific rodent like animal" unless the university changed it lately

Kinda like the 90's "Power Rangers," which defeats the purpose of even having a "mascot." Where's the "tradition" or imaging reflecting bravery in battle?

Yes, but that is the university's decision; seeing the name Redskins as an option is what I am talking about. Give them credit for doing what they believe is right
Well you're always going to have some people think it's an overreaction. Free speech is one of the rights here in America. Just as it's right for Valpo to change the name if they think it's associated with something they don't want their institution to be connected with.

I'd much rather have this option over say the Pyongyang Sycamores where if someone posted that the government would be hunting them down to silence them... permanently.

Don't want to argue, Jason. I just think there is so much hate in this country that it would be nice to not see some sarcasm that is aimed to make fun. Just my opinion.

I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it to "Knights" or maybe "Golden Knights". "Seagulls" would also be unique since they live in the area thanks to the big lake.

Crusaders always seemed an odd choice for a Lutheran university; the Crusaders were a 'force" prior to M. Luther publishing his "edict," prior to the Reformation...

It'll be interesting to see what they choose, though I'm betting it'll be pretty generic

Great point Jason

It's literally the basis for the mascot change.
Valpo’s student president, who was the figurehead and most vocal about changing, tweets firestorms about politics/parties and talks about running for public office.

So with her role, Valpo’s mascot saga was never going to not be political this time, as she gleefully injected politics.

If Valpo was going to change its mascot, they needed to do it without her involved or after she leaves. Her presence is a lightning rod - and she enjoys the attention.
