I don't really go watch many Valley road games or even bother going to STL the last couple seasons since my expectation is that we will get our face kicked in on most occasions - which totally ruins the trip for me - so I don't have many opinions about Valley fan bases. This seems kinda like gossip back in the day - "hey who's your least favorite friend?"... That said:
1. Evansville - likely because I've seen more road games at Evansville than any other Valley team. Let me start with saying outside of Turonis Evansville has the worst selection of restaurants known to man - outside of the casino the overall Evansville experience leaves a lot to be desired. A few years back I had some Evansville fans barking at me and my friends - we had several beverages before hand but we were yelling at the officials and what not. We were not yelling at these fans - they had security come talk to us until the Evansville fans behind us told security we were not doing anything wrong... The real reason Evansville fans are the worst is Evansville is historically one of the worst programs in the Valley over the last 20 years and for some reason they have a fan base that is absolutely oblivious to this fact - always thinking they have a better program than they really have.
2. Southern IL - I thought the way that fan base treated Barry Hinson over the last 2 years was disgusting. Some of the things people tweeted about him after this season was beyond embarrassing. After that display I will never have any respect for Southern IL and I wish them nothing but the worst moving forward.
3. Indiana State - The majority of our "fans" take little ownership over Indiana State. Of course this doesn't apply to 75% of the people on this forum who donate, support, buy tickets, etc. etc. But it does apply to the large majority of our alums who really are just fair weather fans coming out of the woodwork when things are going well but cheering on IU, PU, ND and ______________ whoever else when the Sycamores are doing what they usually do - struggle.
Full disclaimer before I start my list. Overall I pretty well like all of the fan bases that are currently in the MVC. Just choosing the ones with the most bad apples and obnoxious fans. Before Wichita State left they were easily #1. They had classless fans, a classless coach, and a classless athletic dept. The only person/player from Wichita I ever had any respect for was Ron Baker.
1) Illinois State- I've had several run-ins with their fans. I'm not sure why they have so many bad apples.
2) North Dakota State (MVFC)- Never had an issue with any of their fans in person. However they have a lot of annoying message board posters that take to other boards to justify NDSU to the rest of the world and it just gets annoying after a while.
3) Private schools in the MVC (tie)- I get sick of hearing from private schools' fans about how if the publics in the MVC dropped football and just spent it all on basketball, we'd be the midwestern version of the Big East. I also get sick of hearing fans from public schools that want their school to think and act like a private school.
I actually like EIU fans and EIU in general. In fact I actually go to most of their home games in football, basketball, and baseball; whenever ISU isn't playing. They are solidly my second favorite school and I even cheer for them when they play other MVC schools (besides ours of course). I basically follow ISU, EIU, MV(F)C and the OVC in that order and don't even bother following anyone else anymore.
I've only had two bad experiences dealing with opposing fan bases in person and both were at the MVC tournament we won.
The first was a group of Wichita State fans walking through the basketball team pep rally/send off at the hotel asking if anyone wanted to sell their tickets as we wouldn't be needing them after today. I'd usually dismiss something like that based on our performance, but they were more mature (sic: old as dirt) and only classy people would have that sort of timing.
Second, every time we interfaced with Missouri State students during the tournament they scoffed and talked down about State. Made wiping their ass off the floor that much sweeter.
IIRC, a Sycamore fan got into a fight outside the arena that year with a Creighton fan. Not sure of the specifics, but someone was on the ground knocked out.
