From what I've heard and seen Spencer is fitting in well. Guys like and repsect him, seems to be making friends and getting help from fellow receivers. My understanding is that they have most of the playbook in already and he's still got a lot to learn. It sounds like the conditioning and all of the route running and 7 on 7 is a lot more than he experienced at Mich St. As mentioned earlier he looked to have tweaked a hamstring last night, didn't look serious though.

BTW not sure who was punting last night but it wasn't pretty...

Isnt the freshman kicker from Washington, IN punting?

I saw him on video and he looked to be a pretty good two-way punter/kicker.

The kicking game has been a continuing problem. Having Santino have to punt last year spoke volumes. Little was decent percentage-wise, but kickoff distance was a big issue as was the inability to kick a FG from 35+. Hopefully it was just a bad day for the new punter. Lawrence Young should be the 3rd DL, with Garrison McElroy and Tyler Boyd also in the mix. Young is the strongest of the DL's, but is a straight-ahead guy. Josh Scott and Phil Walker will probably see some time as rush ends in a 4-3 set. We need to remember that there are very few Ronnie Fouch's that transfer to FCS schools. We've had several over the past 4 years, and he's the only one that made a huge splash. There are reasons why they are transferring; some work, some don't. I'm hoping all of the new transfers are able to contribute and make the team better.

They need to get some kind of a kicking coach, nobody is getting any better sitting around during film or holding chains during practice. Hopefully with the new practice field they might be able to get more kicks in during practice to work on thier leg strength and stamina. There are multiple small things that could be done to make them better. Hopefully it will come with time.

ISU has never had a kicking coach....

and the Sycamores have produced some pretty good kickers over the years: Dave Vandercook (55 yard field goal vs. Drake, school record; had two 50-yard field goals to beat SIU as a true freshman); Scott Bridges; Joe Stellern; Tom Allison; Corey Potter; Punter Bill Edwards (he holds most of the ISU punting records); punter Mike Johannes; punter Chuck Standiford.

Vandercook, Edwards and Johannes all got looks from NFL teams. Vandercook and Edwards attended minicamp with the Chiefs (I was with them on the trip).

A few of those guys have offered to step in and help out the current kickers if it was allowed by NCAA rules.

I understand that they have never had a coach and that they have had good kickers and punters. That doesnt mean that any of those guys that set records would not have benefitted from a coach, someone to watch their technique constantly and stay on their butt the entire practice like every other player on the field. Power isnt the only thing you should pay attention to in kicking. 55 yarders are great, they make you look awesome but it doesnt mean anyhting if you arent putting 45 through consistently or putting the ball to the goal line every kick instead of putting 1 of 5 in the endzone. You mention Dave Vandercook and his 55 yarder but you leave out Kyle Hooper (16/20) and Cory Potter (8/10) being the leading percentages (80 percent) in field goal for a season. Hooper is also the career leader in field goal percentage (42/59) (71 percent). I understand that it would be an unheard of amount of money just to hire a coach for kicking but a GA isnt a bad idea. Im not aware of any NCAA rules regarding old players coming to work with current players but I cant see there being any rule against them meeting in the offseason or outside of practice, I know that both Cory and Tanner go kick at the stadium outside of practice.

Logan, I understand....

But what has usually been done in the past is that one of the assistant coaches, usually the special teams coach, works with the kickers and punters.

When Coach Harp was the head coach, he did it himself. He always envisioned a placekickers approach to the ball and compared it to a golfers swing.

Other coaches didnt want to mess with the kicker's head too much. If a guy was successful doing what he was doing, then he was told to go practice on his own.

Ya I hear ya, all Im saying is none of the coached have the time to devote hours to watching their kickers with all of their other responsibilities ya know?

Have to agree w/ Logan, I've heard many times from Miles that he "frustrated" w/ the kicking game @ ISU.....Then Change it!@!

Logan if your auditioning for a GA job @ ISU good for you!, your kicking w/ the WC Wildcats has been far and away the best in the Semi-Pro league I've seen. However when beating teams 50-0 FG's are hard to come by.

My son is 5 and loves kicking the ball, everytime he wants to play football, about 3-4 throws then, "can I kick Dad"

When he get a bit older it's time for lessons, (quickest way to a D-I scholly or more) the ability to kick/punt!

If anybody wants to contribute to the "Hire a Kicking Coach" pool....

feel free. I'm sure Trent wouldnt mind people paying for a coach's salary. lol

Tom Just because something was done in the past does not mean it was the right thing to do we have a history of things done right and things done wrong . I think what he is saying is if its broke you have to figure out a way to fix it . I dont think the O-line coach ( or any designated coach) is the best for the job . Kicking is a very important part of the game some will say having a good kicking game will win more than a few ball games for you .

I'm not arguing against a kicking coach....

but in these days of tight football budgets, what assistant coaching position do you get rid of in order to add a kicking coach? Anybody got an idea?

Indiana State is not a BCS school. The Sycamores have a hard enough time paying the coaches on staff that they do have. Where does the money come from to add a kicking coach?

Great idea, but how do you pay for it? Otherwise, you have to make do. Now I would suggest former kickers coming in and helping out, but the NCAA has rules against non-coaches working with the players.

See now you just diggin stuff out of your pocket, there is nothing that says that someone cannot voluntarily help to coach the team.

Check page 63-64, there is a column just for volunteer coaches. Just because I suggested getting one doesnt mean I said go pay a guy 60 grand a year, I simply stated it would benefit the program. I know that if any kicker from back in the day that was any good came back and said," Coach Miles if it is ok with you I would like to come work with the kickers to critique and work with them." There is no way he is going to turn them down, hes a very smart coach. And the "hire a kicking coach pool" isnt your classiest post. That coming from a 19 year old that has read hundreds of your posts and has a load of respect for you and your knowledge.

@StateAlum I wasnt saying I was up for the job lol, Im still trying to go play somewhere else next year after I send out film from the wildcats!

The only volunteer coach...

in FCS ball that QUICKLY springs to mind is Jim Harbaugh...

Worked for his ol' man at WKU; course it helped that he was knocking down NFL QB money AND that his brother John was feeding him recruiting data...

Obviously there are more; but few spring to mind...
