Tiller, two starting offensive linemen out at Georgia State
By Doug Roberson

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia State’s football team experienced a major shake-up on Monday, two days after a dismal 42-14 loss to Tennessee-Chattanooga in which the Panthers rushed for just 30 yards.

Two starting offensive linemen, center Michael Davis and guard Harrison Clottey, quit the team. In addition, running backs coach Tony Tiller was reassigned to another position within the athletic department, coach Trent Miles announced on Monday. Graduate assistant Brock Lough will take over the running backs.

“Tony is an excellent person and a good young coach,” Miles said. “He will be a very good coach in this profession. I wish him the best and will do anything I can to help him.”

Davis said he loves the team but needed to focus on his academics. He is a graduate student. Clottey couldn’t be reached for comment. Both were redshirt seniors.

The Panthers have struggled to run the ball in their first two games, rushing for 72 yards in the season-opening loss to Samford followed by a program-worst performance in Saturday’s loss to the Mocs.

However, Miles said he isn’t blaming Tiller for those problems.

“Point the finger at me,” he said. “It starts with me.”

Miles declined to answer any more questions about Tiller.

Tiller was hired after Thomas Brown resigned shortly after accepting the job. Tiller played at East Tennessee State and had stints in the NFL with several teams, including the Falcons.

He is a graduate of Stephenson High, from which the Panthers have three commitments for the Class of 2014: tight end Ari Werts, outside linebacker Malik Ricks and safety Ronald Peterkin.

Miles said earlier Monday that he wants players with passion following Saturday’s 42-14 loss to Tennessee-Chattanooga. The Panthers will play at West Virginia on Saturday.

Pretty sad and a VERY shaky start for Trent. It personifies what I always say about moving "up the ladder." Big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. Sometimes it is not always greener. I frankly think he moved too early and always felt that he did. Hopefully he can right the ship.

Not too surprised since Trent has a personality that not everyone is going to respond well to. Wish Brock Lough well with the new coaching responsibilities.

Also, why is this under Help, Feedback and Suggestions?

Much like his time at Indiana State, it is going to take time to turn that program around. Don't forget it is compounded by the fact they're moving up to FBS with FCS talent. He got rid of a lot of players during the first couple of years at State.

Was thinking the same thing. Going to use the same model he used in Terre Haute down in Hotlanta. Given time, it will bear fruit. The struggles he will have this year won't be any different than his first year here, they will just be magnified because he is in a bigger city and now coaching an FBS team.

I'd imagine he knew what he was getting into when he took the job. They may be in a worse position than he was at ISU. I know we had a 33 game loosing streak or whatever but if we were in the OVC or 3 or so other FCS conferences we would have just been a 2-3 win team each season. GaSt wasnt good and THEN they moved up to FBS (SunBelt) 1 year earlier than another instate GaSo who was a FCS powerhouse. He has his hands full but nobody should be surprised at their position at this point.

Shouldn't surprise anyone they've already lost an assistant coach...coaching staff turnover was always one of my concerns here at ISU (even though many claimed coaches were leaving for "better opprtunities").
