Charlies Pub - located less than 5 mins. from the Indiana State University Campus in Terre Haute, Indiana is promoting the IU vs. North Carolina game - how nice. I ate at Charlies for lunch today with two other Indiana State University graduates and season ticket holders.

I wonder how many IU graduates and Indiana State season ticket holders ate at Charlies for lunch today?

This is one of my favorite establishments in town and I get this e-mail (attached) from them this afternoon.

Don't think the owner wont be getting a phone call from me and don't think that I won't be taking my business elsewhere. Charlies has never done ANYTHING that I know of to support Indiana State athletics - nothing. This is enough for me. I've had it.

Safe to say there was no poster for ISU vs UCLA at Charlies?

Lame.

No e-mails or posters... Safe to say.

An ISU Board Member and Brian Fritz, Voice of Indiana State Basketball was having lunch in Charlies today. It's not uncommon for other ISU figure heads, alums, season ticket holders to frequent this restaurant for lunch. It's one of the best lunches in town - I come back to work and get to see this. I can tell you this much, don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining...

Charlies owner already contacted a regular who voiced concerns and said thanked him for the feedback and said he would like to promote road games that are on TV in the future.

I mean what else was he suppose to say?? Lol

As a local business owner, can you blame him? It'll draw a crowd. Period. If he promotes the AFC Championship game and the Colts aren't playing, or a Lakers/Heat game vs. a Pacers game, should we be upset?

The bottom line is, he's a small business, doing what he needs to do make money. If he were to promote ISU games, which he may/may not have done in the past, how many people would that draw to his bar? If not many, then why blame him for trying to pack the place for a big game? I'm sure he doesn't do this for every IU game, nor did he in the last decade much...but now, they are red hot, the bandwagon is full, this is a BIG game, and he's being a business man.

Trust me, if ISU would draw a crowd for him...he'd do it. This isn't about anything but business.

WHOA! I am good with him making a sound business decision and capatlizing off the IU success - don't read deeper into my comments then you already have. That's all fine and good - he has to do what he has to do to survive. As he told my friend, "look I have a hard time getting people in here during the week. I barely do enough business to justify being open after 6:00 p.m. during the week" So no I can't blame him.

But I do blame him for support/promoting IU and not doing diddly poo to support Indiana State. Do you know how many ISU people eat in that place every week. A lot - every time I am in that place someone with affiliations with this school is in this restaurant. Perfect example - the Indiana State vs. UCLA game was on a Friday night, on TV - did he do anything to promote that game? No he did not - how many games this season do we have during the week that are going to be televised? Several - should he make every effort to promote those games? Hell yes he should - I don't give two shits if it draws a crowd or not. Look who comes in your place during the lunch hour to eat (place is full daily), do it as a way to say thanks for your business Indiana State alums.

And for me (you want to talk about him) this isn't about anything but Pride - can you blame me "LoyalAlum" for being unhappy about the lack of Pride in this town. You always talk about "stop making excuses", you stop making excuses. Local business people should support Indiana State University and I think if you were to call him and ask he would agree - even if it doesn't draw a crowd. It's just the right thing to do and he wouldn't argue with that. But has he done it in the past? Probably not - because most people in this town don't give a shit.

I give a shit - now blame me. I posted it here, I sent and e-mail to friends and family, I sent Charlies and e-mail and I'm calling tomorrow.

Oh and one more thing - maybe I care so much because as a kid sitting in my season tickets I always looked to my right and saw a couple guys always standing up cheering - always the first ones on their feet during timeouts - always trying to get people going. I believe you were one of those guys, were you not? I looked over at you guys even though I didn't know you personally at the time and said to myself, I want to be like that guy. I want to support Indiana State like that. A lot of reasons I love Indiana State the way I do - but I can tell you that I remember always seeing you guys standing up at games as a kid - lasting image for me.

I totally get what you're saying. I'm just defending the man for trying to drum up some business in tough times. I hope he does the same when ND plays.

I agree, he SHOULD be doing things for ISU. You're right on the money there. I don't know what he does or doesn't do though, so I can't speak to that.

I always put my money where my mouth is, though. If ISU is on and a local establishment isn't featuring that game. I leave. And I let them know why.

I was impressed last year at Buffalo Wild Wings. For the ISU/Vandy game, they had the game on nearly every TV and volume up. That's good business and I let them know it.

I applaud your intent, SSOM. You're right on the money.

And thanks for the compliment regarding my unbridled enthusiasm back in the day. I think you're one of the few that appreciated it! lol I know those behind me and beside me weren't as appreciative!

I applaud both of you guys for actually giving a %#!! and having passion for the school and the athletic programs. Multiply you by a few thousand, and we'd have some good crowds. I'm not an alum, and an out-of-towner to boot, but whenever I'm in town for games and going out, I always ask people what they know about the ISU programs, and if they've been to any games (restaurants, hotels, bars, grocery stores...). I always try to let them know that the support goes both ways--they support the programs, and we support their establishments.

Something else is these so call appeal stores, you can't hardly find any ISU shirts, etc. yet there is plenty of iu crap. But........ I have at times, covered an iu shirt with a ISU shirt so you couldn't see them if they had both......

yeah me bad........

Thanks but seriously don't thank me! If you are coming to TH this Saturday or are already in TH - try and make time to visit Charlies and or Bally or both - order a few drinks, order lunch - thank them for supporting the Sycamores, let them hear you! Order a $2 nacho and some beer. Do something to let them know - they are the ones to thank! Don't thank me!

Not to sound "out of touch" but is that the ol' Charlies Hideaway on Crawford?

Yep that is Charlies Hideaway - now Charlies Pub and Grille. Great restaurant/bar - probably my favorite place in town. I think me and some friends are going to swing by Charlies and possibly Bally before the game.

Anyone else planning on stopping into either place send me a PM.

It has changed a LOT since the 80's.. They did a remodel a while back and it is much larger and nicer now.

It's my Kiwanis Club's favorite place to go for our "social meetings" on the first Tuesday of every month..
We had an inter-club with the Noon club the other day and had about 20 members combined there for dinner... I'd guess that 75% were ISU Alums.

Charlie and Lois were two of my all-time TH favorites. He also once stuck a 44-magnum in the face of a thug getting ready to beat me with a tire iron so he was also a friend with true purpose. Last I heard, his son had the bar but I have always loved to go there and get a Tweety-burger and STILL the best bloody Mary in town. Of course, I agree with you on supporting the bars that are there for ISU.
