This is the epitome of the USC fanbase. When times are good, they come out in droves and are the hottest ticket in town. When times aren't... they sell off home games so they can make gate. Los Angeles is such a front running town.

The phenomena is not new...during the early 90's while living & teaching in FL, Vero Beach HS (a perennial FL football power back then under Billy Livings), would have 80% of their scheduled games AT HOME, as opponet$ would reap dividends from the VB 10,000 seat sellouts, thus opting to $acrifice home game benefits.

Your portrayal of LA as a "front running town" pretty much echoes SSOM's earlier comments about
IU & TH and the "socialized elitism" involved in college selection. It's all part of the food chain, which may be changing (at least according to the CBS article I posted earlier).

Not defending it, not saying it is right, but it is a good business decision! Why not, go where it will sell out!

Ya, that's pretty much the "spirit" of America now, isn't it..."selling out?"
We've lost our manufacturing base, Hispanic's now out number blacks because of loose borders (Texa$ love$ it - also, see current Rep. Canseca's support of the Mexican Trucking Bill supported by Obama!), California's going bankrupt because of the Hispanic drain on social services, and the U.S. seems preoccupied worldwide with creating "democracy" in nations whose foundations will NEVER support the concept of LIBERTY.

'Sack, you're 100% on the money...

Howz that for a "spout," 'Slacker? :imslow:

USC sold its soul a long time ago. So did Kentucky, Ohio State, Texas ... the list goes on and on.

Mentioned this to a friend of mine who pointed out that Indiana is basically doing the same thing in football this year by playing a home game against Penn State in Washington D.C.

So people are now criticizing schools for raising money (USC).....then criticizing schools (Purdue) for not paying enough money to their coach?

I don't understand........College sports has been "all about the money" for quite a few years now......It's not going to change.

I would think we would be better off talking on how to fill Hulman Center....I could care less about USC and the politics up at the Purdue Athletic Dept.

Just my opinion......GO STATE!!!!!

From some talk, we gotta rebuild it bigger, better than mizzu...

afterall, we have a "dry goods vendor done good" in town as well; Hulman / Walton; it's all the same

Win games; make it a FUN, exciting experience for the fans!

I agree with Indstate 33. Let's try to fill Hulman Center and forget about this other stuff going around. Of course watching an exciting team play and WIN is the most important item to filling any stadium or arena. Next the students, we need 3,000 there for every game and put them close to the vistors bench. The unversity needs to do more to get the students out (like the BLACK OUT night) this past season. Next, with so much local talent now playing, let's try to have several close city nights bringing in both adults and high school students from Rockville, Marshall, Sullivan, Clinton, and Brazil besides the Terre Haute fans. A big thanks to those businesses that sponsor special nights in an effort to help with the fan base.

Welcome to the Forum..

We've been "talking about how to fill HC" for quite some time now. Some great ideas have been presented, a few have been integrated. Bottom line is that it will take multiple back-back winning seasons to overcome the past 4 decades of general abysmal performance (yes, there were a couple winning seasons in that time period). K-mac laid the foundation and Lansing poured SOME concrete last season, but it takes TIME to permanently impact morale.

Thanks Bankshot.

I enjoy reading all the information in here regarding ISU......

I agree with your comments regarding filling Hulman. I missed the Bird era by 5 years, but I remember a few games from Freshman year when he hosted Minnesota and Tulsa (ranked #12 at the time) and beat them both. Very large crowds in each of those 2 games....not sell-outs, but big crowds and the loudest I have ever heard at Hulman was the Tulsa game. Although my favorite game off all time was the "fight game" with Wichita St (can't remember what year that was..87?)

Winning will cure most if not all issues. I thought we took a huge step in the right direction this year....but I also thought that the last time we made it to the tournament.

Question: Do students still get in free at Hulman? I still never understood why more students did not show up during my time at ISU. I had a few fraternity brothers and other friends stay in the dorm to watch an IU game or Purdue game instead of walking across campus to attend an ISU game.

With teams playing in Yankee stadium, playing at Wrigley, and all kinds of examples of games being moved or planned to be played at varying locations, this isn't, to me an issue of "selling out or selling your soul" this is an issue of the business mindset becoming more and more a part of athletics in college vs. the typical academic approach. Its sad, it unfortunate, but it is reality.

Personally I don't care where a team plays if it will sell out somewhere else then play it somewhere else. There were alot of people at Conseco for the ISU purdue game...we have talked about ISU playing a football game at the "university of Carmel HS" stadium as an idea...how would that be different?

Yankee Stadium I AND Wrigley both had histories of hosting football (college and professional) AND they were for 'essentially' home teams (West Point, the NY Giants, Illinois, Chi Bears)

Penn St and gloomington in DC?? My geography may be off but Penn St and gloomington aren't home teams in DC.

Do I blame gloomington for selling out? No, but they did in fact SELL OUT; yes, it was a business decision but only because the college football experience in gloomington is SO ABYSMAL, it was an opportunity to SELL OUT to DC.

so is the largest cocktail party in the world a "sell out" game for Florida and Georgia when it is played in Jacksonville??

More of logistics isn't it? it's a neutral site; 'equally removed' from the campuses...

And they do it every year.

The psu/gloomington game was all about the $$$$; put the uf/uga game at either campus, it'll draw the same numbers

Given the proximity of Jacksonville to the State of Georgia, I'd hope so.
If not a cocktail party, at least a Jumbalya Fest!

It is not allowed to referred to as the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party", due to weak, politically correct college administrators. Below is a quote from About.com.....

In 2006, however, officials from Florida, Georgia and the Southeast Conference, fearing the name might promote overindulgence in alcohol, intervened and asked that CBS, along with other television networks, no longer use the “World’s Largest Cocktail Party” phrase. The campaign was led by Georgia President Michael Adams. As his spokesman told the Associated Press that year: "We don't like the phrase. We don't use the phrase. We would prefer that nobody use the phrase."

I don't know about the rest of you, but I never ONCE thought about tasting alcohol in college until TV forced it upon me. College was all about studying and making myself a strong, moral, upstanding citizen. If they wouldn't have had names like "Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" when I was watching football on Saturday, I may have never had a drop. Damn you Verne Lundquist and CBS!!!!!!!!!!!
