Gotta Hav

The Wade Level
I know this isn't a dead subject, but when does ISU (and the MVC) get off of dead-center and at least consider moving the radio broadcasts of its bigger basketball games to a professional, and maybe a national level?

I listened to the ISU/Vanderbilt game last night on XM Satellite radio.

The play-by-play and color commentary guys were either SEC or Vanderbilt people, but none-the-less the broadcast was clear, it was uninterrupted.....and you might even want to say...the broadcast was guaranteed. Something that WBOW is incapable of doing.

I know everyone doesn't have Satellite Radio, but how many of us already listen to ISU over the internet? So, can ISU and the MVC move its big or headline games to Satellite radio, or a broader internet radio broadcast with an organization and sponsors, who can provide its fan base a way to listen these games?

As much interest and support that State Farm and Caseys General Stores already has invested in ARCH Madness and other MVC games, I'm surprised that they don't move this market share into another form of electronic broadcast like Satellite or internet radio.

Anyway, just sharing the frustration of wanting to be a part of ISU (and MVC basketball) when you can't go to the game(s).

He raises a valid point...the MVC has been making some reasonable $$$ off of Arch Madness, and it's about time to leap into the 21st century of satellite radio given the demographics of the conference in today's highly mobile society.

How did I follow last night's game? By reading the written commentary of 'Boda & SSOM here on the Forum. I do not have DISH or DIRECTV and the oak trees surrounding my home obstruct the ability to receive a good USB-connect signal on my PC.

I've put in a request to "Santa" for a Sirius XM Radio this X-mas. Now if only the MVC could cooperate, I'd catch a few Sycamore games while driving across America.

Well of course you agree, you two collaborate before making posts :D haha I didn't technically take a stance. Sounds like something that the MVC needs to consider - not an Indiana State issue.

As long as he pays the cell phone bill, I won't complain...:headbang:

Seriously, he had a flat tire while returning from Merrilville to Ft Wayne last night during the final five min of the game...deferred fixing the flat UNTIL the Vandy-ISU game had concluded. He was so happy at the victory, he was hopping around in the snow afterwords and busted his -ss while:geeza2: slipping on a loose lug nut!

Yep, those things are controlled at the League Level... would obviously LOVE to see the MVC try to get on XM..

The individual schools have the rights to their games, I doubt ISU would be very happy if the league stepped in on their money.

XM has contracts with the leagues... SEC and Big10...
They don't have individual contracts with individual schools...

Although, they now have a new channel that looks like it is serving up other conferences as well.
It used to be conference by conference... Big 10 and SEC were their leading leagues..

That very well maybe, but MSU has a large statewide network that pays good money to broadcast the games. Why would they want to give up that money? It's less exposure and likely won't pay the schools as well.

I'm sure that the league would spread that $$ around to the schools.
You don't think schools in those conferences had their own radio network as well??

Would be cool if the Valley could come up with a TV contract similar to what the Horizon League has. If they had decent quality, I would go for a subscription service.

?????

How can a Worldwide satellite network be "less exposure?" I've traveled on I-44 thru Springfield during all four (4) seasons and really enjoy the ESPN pipeline, but once I hit the border of MO, it's back to the cave. You actually think the Bears network overides the signal from Columbia? With U. of MO alignment with the SEC, the shift of influence to a more southern listening audience is gonna increase, reaching into a once-sterile SW MO territory.

Why does Mo St. think they're BETTER than everyone else in the MVC? I wish they'd parachuted to the USA or whatever-land conference last year. It's always a "Poor MSU, got cheated out of an NCAA bid" yawn after each season. Shit gets old...at some point in time, schools like MSU have to understand the reason(s) WHY the MVC doesn't get multiple berths in the "Big Dance," and put their sectarian interests in the cupboard.

Ok I will bite, last year the radio contract brought in 1.2 million for the school, so for the conference to better that you are looking at 13 million at a minimum. Then you tell me a world wife satellite network reaches more people? I would venture to guess that 21 stations in Missouri plus online streaming caps that number pretty fast. What percentage of people even have satellite radio? I wish the valley had something because I would listen but I don't think that satellite radio is the best option. As for your destain for MSU I'm sorry you feel that way, I think most schools would love to get the coverage the Bears do.

Rankings

Well, finally getting a little respect. We got 1 vote in the ap poll. Gotta start somewhere right?

Is the radio contact exclusive? And by exclusive, I mean does it cover satellite distribution? Those are all independent contracts with different stations...XM/MVC would negotiate their own distribution within that network. It wouldn't need to REPLACE that income...I seriously doubt those contracts exclude distribution via satellite...

You got me thinking so I made a call and this is what I learned, "Meyer Communications hold the radio rights of all MSU broadcasts, for there to ever be a secondary provider it would require thwart their market be out of the Missouri State Radio Market." I asked about an MVC satellite radio or stream deal and go this remark "that is something that MSU and a few other schools are against, the availability of MSU games is our number one priority, but we don't feel like a conference affiliated site is in the schools best interest." As a fan would love to be able to watch more valley games but, I don't think schools are ready to give that money up to the conference.

Those are the kinds of things that Doug Elgin would have to work out with each school. I personally don't see how it CAN'T be good for everyone, but I know that it has also been done leaving specific schools out of the contract. I could see that happening as well.... MVC Contract - minus the MSU Home Games... simple enough to do if the rest of the conference wishes to negotiate for satellite radio distribution... It really only effects those schools that have sold off "exclusive" radio broadcast rights... and if those exclusive rights include satellite distribution.

I can't imagine how it wouldn't be good for MSU in the long run either... Satellite radio is nation-wide...
