If we want to make it to the playoffs, let alone survive the MVFC slobberknocker, we're going to need to get more from Perish. While he has been efficient, there are a couple things he needs to get fixed when we face the better MVFC defenses.

My biggest concern is him holding onto the ball too long. He's mobile so he's got to figure a way to either move upfield or just get rid of the ball. On several of the sacks he has taken this year, including this weekend against Drake, he continued backwards losing additional yardage. Taking a sack is not always a bad thing but losing an additional 7-10 yards is. Of our remaining games, 50% feature teams with Top 25 defenses -- North Dakota State (1), South Dakota State (16), Illinois State (22) and Youngstown State (#24).

You can bet these guys will start loading the box to stop Shakir and trying to forcing Perish to throw the ball more. Having gone to Western Michigan, you know he has the talent. He just needs to make quicker decisions and trust his ability.

I think he'll get better. He and the receivers as we work our way into this season. I like that we're working shorter routes into the offense this year to allow for a faster release of the ball.

We also need people to catch his throws. Several passes have been money only to watch our guys have butter fingers. What's up with that bomb dropped by 89 last week. Unreal.

Without a doubt. That has to be beyond frustrating for him.

He tripped over a white line. Goodness, he was soooooooooooo open.

I think we're going to end up having quite a few WRs in the next recruiting class.

TOTALLY THIS! if our guys could only hang on to the football we'd be set.

With the threat of Bell we should be able to run play-action passes all day long. We'll see I guess.Everyone is right about the drops too.

I'm honestly more worried about the drops than Perish's play from here on out. I agree he holds onto the ball to long but I think he's getting better at that and alot of that has to do with being able to get the receivers open. I was VERY impressed with Drake's QB...I honestly didn't know much about him but was very impressed with the command of the offense he had and how he was never in a hurry and under complete control. He also did a great job selling the play action and runs.

Truthfully, our receivers have been a little disappointing the last couple of years. I'm hopeful they will still go on to a great season this year, but we need more consistency from the group, both WRs and TEs.

Haven't many people on this board talked about Ronnie Fouch being the best QB ever at Indiana State? If you look at the first 3 games for Ronnie and Mike Perrish at ISU, I don't see much to complain about (particularly considering that Ronnie had started 9 or 10 games at Washington before he transferred, and Perrish had no real game experience before he transferred). I'll go along with holding onto the ball too long in some cases, but his decision-making has been excellent and his production is arguably better through the first 3 starts than Ronnie's:

Fouch: 38-76, 1 int., 356 yards, 1 TD, 3 sacks (St. Joes, Cincinnati, Western Illinois)
Perrish: 37-60, 2 int., 470 yards, 4 TDs, 7 sacks (Indiana, Quincy, Drake)

I'm just happy that we appear to be in great shape at QB for the next several years.

A couple of thoughts
1 Receivers need to CATCH THE BALL
2. He must hold the ball longer to allow receivers to complete route/get separation
3. I remember the coach from Quincy, Ronnie Fouch's first year ( I'm recalling from strictly from memory), talking after the game which ISU won. When ask the difference between this year's game and last year's game (Quincy won), he answered very loudly it was the ISU quarterback! One of the the many points of praise for Ronnie was he ability to hold the ball for a long time, to hold the ball seemingly forever and let the route develop then release the ball. At this point Perish has done a very good job with that fundamental, the down side is there will be some sacks, Ronnie had a few too.

Gonna disagree here on holding onto the ball too long. On some throws it is required, but not all. He simply cannot take 2-3 sacks per game, especially losing yardage and he has lost 43 yards on his sacks thus far. Do this in a critical game where a 3rd and 2 turns into a 3rd and 8 and that could cost you the game, especially with the receiver struggles we've had. As he gains experience, I'm sure he will take fewer and learn how to get up field to prevent lost yardage and/or throw it away to avoid it completely.

I am as well, but I don't think you sweep weaknesses under the rug. Right now, around 15% of Perish's drop backs account for a sack or being stopped at/behind the LOS. That's too much IMO, especially since he has mobility. He's had 11 plays for a total loss of 43 yards. So that means in the other 4 non-sacks he gained 2 yards as the stats have him down for a net loss of 41. Not all of it is Perish, I'm just saying that is one area for improvement, especially with the MVFC big boys coming up.

In defense of the receivers, I think they'l get better...if not, coaches need to consider throwing to other capable hands which they have. As for the dropped long ball...that is one of the more difficult passes to catch...you're wide open, the ball is in the air a long time and you know the defenders are closing in on you. Need to make the catch but certainly understand it happens sometimes...felt terrible for him, a great young man. We'll be fine if we can get in a better throwing rhythem....

We've had that happen several times this year already--trying to turn upfield and run before securing the ball. IU game, 4th quarter--same thing. It's just a matter of getting more comfortable and keeping focus.

Those dropped passes might be hurting Perish's confidence a bit with the receivers. I know it probably would me, but I'm not a college level quarterback and he can't let that stuff get to him. Perish will get much better as did Fouch. If I remember, Fouch didn't start out that well here either.

I thought Justin Hilton, Alex Jones and Bryant Kent were very good receivers.

Hilton, Jones, and Kent were very good receivers. I'm not sure if Hilton still is or not but he was with the Bengals. We have had some good receivers but I think we have a lot of young guys out there gaining experience.

Even though the line didn't play well, he's got to learn to either get rid of the ball sooner or tuck and run.
