Good article in Peoria paper on depth and if we're legit or not.

And so far it has worked. The Sycamores are 4-1 in the Valley, tied for second place with preseason favorite Wichita State.

But that mark might be deceiving. Those five games were against teams with a combined 5-25 record in league play. The next seven games will be against opponents who are 32-10. The Sycamores play first-place Missouri State, plus Wichita State and Creighton twice each.

Good read. Thanks for posting it. Time will tell the tale about contenders or pretenders. I expect us to end up somewhere lower than where we are now, but higher than the "experts" projected. We will take care of business at home, capture some W's on the road and gain the rep of being one of the best defensive teams in the Valley.

Said Lansing: “I told those two, ‘You’ve got to commend your team on what they did without you. Your minutes are going to shrink a little bit. But now it’s up to you two to play like these guys have been playing."
This is my favorite part of the whole article.

“Tonight,” Kelly said, “I just wanted to play hard and be part of it. Dwayne and I are just added weapons. We’re playmakers. We’re going to play good defense, be good leaders and try to be part of what’s grown here while we’ve been down.”

“We’re just going to play hard,” Lathan said, “and see what happens.”

I hope these two really believe this and don't go back to the bull rush technique as soon as we lose a game.

Good article!

That likely won’t be enough to beat the Missouri Valley heavyweights, who dominate the Sycamores’ schedule for the next three weeks.

But you never know.

Although this article is very complimentary of Indiana State and is a nice read, I believe he makes mention of the fact (similar to Little Eddie's position) he doubts it matters what we do, we will probably not be able to "compete" with WSU and MSU. Now I will admit that he and Little Eddie have much more knowledge of those teams than I, matter-a-fact I have never seen either team play. The reason I say "compete" LE is, when you say that a team is going to have to have an off night and the other team is going to have to have a really good night to beat them, then well you are suggesting that we can't compete - plain and simple, don't try to spin it any other way. If I sound offended/slighted, I am.

However, I find it hard to believe that the teams we are beating in the Valley (normally a highly competitive conference) are that bad. As I have stated before, the same thought would have probably been had by Wessler when seeing how the Sycamores matched up against ND and PU. Both games that Indiana State had chances to win, so to suggest that those teams (MSU & WSU) are maybe better than Indiana State - fine I am cool with that. But I am tired of all this bull about who we have played and the fact that we have played some home games yadda yadda yadda. Don't let those comments cloud your thoughts of what this team has done, they have bounced back after losses all season. They have won games without our two best players (by EVERYONES estimation) coming into the season. So don't let outsiders trick you into thinking that we only won those games because we were playing bad teams and we were playing at home. So what.... Bradley was beat up the first time we played them, we took care of business and beat the tar out of them. Isn't that the point? Had we played those teams close and squeaked out close victories we would be calling those "good wins", but nooooo the Sycamores blow the doors off a couple teams and "not really a good win you were at home and they suck".

So look if people want to compliment us on our success I am fine by that, but don't give me this bull about us not being able to play with the upper tier teams in the MVC, last time I checked the records we were in the upper tier. It aint an admiration, you have to win freaking basketball games to get to that point. We have won 5 Valley games by an average of 12 points, how's the saying go? You are what your record says you are? Well in Valley play our record says we are a damn good ball club getting better!

Finally let the record show that I am not asking for anyone to respect us, I realize that is not going to happen. However the backhanded compliments really don't do much for me at this point.

Fair enough SSOM...I'll take it a step further in saying that if both teams were to play well, the Syc's would be competitive but 7 or 8 times out of 10 WSU or MSU would beat the Syc's. Just my guesstimation.

I will also say that I'm not necessarily an "outsider".

The Syc's are positioned well right now...they have the 3rd place slot if they battle hard these next 6 games. My opinion, which is only from watching a few games this year, is that there is a sizeable drop off in quality talent after MSU and WSU in the Valley...I say this depsite believing that the Syc's are a pretty deep team.

I also would be extremely happy if the Syc's prove me wrong...that would be awesome...I'm not a big WSU fan...I like MSU, don't know why...they just seem likeable and I've not heard or noticed any negative for them (though I think Ricks likes to talk smack during the games...but the kid backs it up).

There you have it...prove me wrong Sycamores...would make for a great hoops season.

LE, I didn't take offense to what you said. I thought you were just being objective and honest.
But SSOM, I agree about being tired of some, even our own fans, saying we beat bad teams. That may be true, but the fact is we did it pretty easily. I think that is a difference-maker. If you look at the Valley stats, our team stacks up well in a lot of categories.

I was irritated by some of our fans when we beat DePaul. they aren't that good, obviously, but we beat them like a D3 team and looked good doing it.

We shall see, like I said you know more about the other teams than I do. All I can comment on is what I have seen the Sycamores do and that's really all I have to worry about. I truly believe that if the Sycamores play the way the have been playing, continue to defend well, continue to rebound well and limit the turnovers that they will finish in the top 3 in the Valley and I am not a delusion fan or person at all. Fact of the matter is I picked the Sycamores to win 4 of the next 7 games and I believe that to be reasonable.

The last thing I want to say is that if the Sycamores continue to play good D as they have and on nights they get it going on the offensive side of the ball - you get guys like AC, RJ, Kelly, Printy, Lathan shooting the ball well they can beat any team in the country outside of maybe the AP top 5 and even then it's college hoops and anything can happen. Granted any team can say if any 5 players play well on a given night that they can beat anyone - I understand that. But as you alluded to, the Sycamores have some depth and it's something that we hadn't found early in the non-conference season. The injuries to Lathan and Kelly probably were a blessing in disguise.

Now the real test comes, how will the Sycamores preform? Time to see who's who in the Valley... We've been waiting for this for several years now! :sycamores:

I'm going to take the high road an write our earlier games off as a learning period. New offense, melding players into a cohesive unit, etc..

To be a tough S.O.B down the road it doesn't hurt to get your d++k knocked stiff a time or two. That has happened to this team and credit that to a sucker punch or two…….or three.

Hopefully, the Sycamores will come out firing on all cylinders
