We had a previous thread that was started back when the season was still in progress but now that the season is over, we've seen a couple defections, we've got a decent idea of what the roster will look save for a couple spots.

Departing

G - Everett Clemons
F - Matt Van Scyoc, Niels Bunschoten, Donovan Franklin
C - TJ Bell

Returning
G - Brenton Scott, Jordan Barnes, Laquarious Paige, Trey Knight, Matt Deady
F - Bronson Kessinger, Demonte Ojinnaka, Ethan Claycomb
C - Emondre Rickman, Brandon Murphy

Newcomers

G - Tyreke Key
F - Devin Thomas, Daniel Hunnermann

We currently also have two open scholarships and there is still one more player rumored to possibly be leaving the program. That individual did not play a big role in 2016-2017. So at this current point in time, who would you pencil in as your starting five heading into the first practices for the 2017-2018 season?

Starting 5
Scott
Barnes
Rickman
Kessinger
Thomas

BUT...I think Q will get the starting role....above is just what I think it should be.

Unless we bring in additional players that are better than the two JC stiffs we brought in last year. Here's my take- this might not be the best five but they are our five best- Scott-Barnes-Rickman-Thomas-Key. Let's hope we bring in some bigs who are glass eaters. Just my take. Pretty slim pickens. We need some can't miss players

Looking at our returning and incoming definitely shows we've got a weakness at the 3 spot that absolutely must be addressed with one of those open scholarships. I think it would be a good idea to do exactly what SouthGrad said in raiding one of Keatt's recruits from UNCW. That guy was a solid recruiter.

I keep coming back to this thread wanting to respond, but every time I'm reminded that we have no wing players. Zero. Zilch. We don't have a starting or backup SF on the roster. This...this is a problem.

We're sorely missing a 6"6' slasher/scorer at the 3. With the roster's current construction we're going to be forced to play Paige at the 3, and play him a lot. We can fake it for a while with a core of Barnes, Scott and Rickman, but we all better hope Devin Thomas is as good as his JUCO rankings and Lansing pulls a legit 3 out of nowhere.

I think we go with 3 guards, and Key is one of them.

Key will not start from day 1 - it aint gonna happen. If it does I will tip my cap, I just don't think it's realistic and (without being personal) you have no basis to stand behind your post. It's just like - he was a Mr. Basketball so lets go ahead and crown his ass. Not fair to him or his future.

I'm not going to debate whether a player we've never seen even practice with the team will start, but a three guard lineup doesn't work unless the three guards you're starting can all defend guy's bigger than them and can rebound well for their positions. Also, you need a rim protector at the 5 (check, Rickman) and an athletic 4 that can go get the ball. Bottom line, we ran a three guard lineup all last year with Paige (he's a 2 guard and not even remotely a 3) and it didn't work.

In college basketball, day 1 starters are NOT rare. I think you're going a little silly over it. And you think we have such great players that he has to play behind someone? Remember two guards at Wichita a few years ago?

So the whole quality of our team last year rested on playing 3 guards?

Well...in a way, yes.

Not sure you read what I wrote entirely, but you can't just trot out a 3 guard lineup unless they are the right 3 guards and your 4 and 5 have special skillsets. We have a VERY short group of guards (Barnes is under 6', Scott is barely 6' and Paige is maybe 6'3") and we don't have the PF necessary to do the dirty work to pick up the slack. Rickman makes sense in a three guard lineup with his ability to protect the rim but the rest of the roster does not. Maybe Devin Thomas is the PF we need to unlock the potential of the 3 guard lineup, but just like Key I have no idea how good he's going to be.

In a way, no. A good 4 and a good 5 and a 12 pt 3rd guard would have been fine. l think our 4 hurt us a LOT.

A 12 point third guard? So all we're missing is a top-15 Valley scorer and a "good 4 and a good 5" and your 3 guard lineup magically works. Okay, then I agree. My point was that we have none of those except maybe the 5 in Rickman. You're just validating my point now.

FVV came off the bench his entire FR year and Ron Baker was a RS-FR..So not the best supporting evidence.

Thanks for the correction. I wasn't aware of that. I'm sure the guys they were playing behind were pretty good. I thought FVV was an immediate impact.
