John Groce @ Akron. He is making ~750k a year. Maybe too pricey but he has been great at the MM level at Akron & Ohio. If he had been at Illinois during the NIL era, he would have been successful. He unfortunately never had a plan C on recruiting and always went after 5* when he should have been after 4* guys.

Parallel pay (if donors are willing to keep their money in the kitty) and likely has a buyout. Probably not very realistic but I've always thought he was a solid coach.

They did once upon a time promote Hodges when king couldn't do it anymore.

Yes but only because Stan Evans wouldn't accept the poorly planned, presented "succession" plan from King (coach) and King (AD), not to mention ol' Jerry Huntsman and Doc Dick Landini

My hope is the donors are as pissed off as we are and want to show that ISU can be successful even without the self promoter. Hopefully that gives them incentive to stay aggressive.

Yep, our landing literally is in their hands now. If they keep their committed funds in the pot -- even 50-75% of them, we will have a head coach salary in the upper quartile of the Missouri Valley and that will be attractive.

One thing I found interesting when watching the selection show was how many of the high seeds were described like ISU. “So and so 14 seed can really score. They shoot a lot of 3’s and get to the basket. They are very efficient and fast paced.” And I’d think, “Gosh, that sounds like us.” Then I’d hear the same thing about another team. Then another.

My point being that maybe Schertz isn’t some genius that can’t ever be found again. The game is trending in that direction of the style we played. There are other coaches at D2 or LM that can bring that same style. Let’s make it worthwhile to get them.

Coaching really is a copycat profession and the pace and space offense has permeated from the NBA to the college ranks over the last decade. Everyone puts their own wrinkles on things though and I think HCJS did as well. But yeah, there are tons of guys out there that will run an uptempo offense.

It's about getting the dudes to execute it, though.

His replacement at Lincoln Memorial has carried on his tradition quite well ............. Jeremiah Samarrippas

Samarrippas could hire Jake Odum and be loved instantly...whether or not it would be a good hire I don't know, but it would be popular.

I think I'd also give John Becker a call. He's been at Vermont forever and could be a lifer.

For the 2023-24 school year, Becker's base pay is $375,920. According to incentive terms in his contract, Becker has achieved bonus earnings for winning the America East title ($20,000) and being named the league's coach of the year ($10,000). For the 2022-23 season, Becker was paid out $75,000 in bonuses.

I have no faith in Deb making a good decision, however if she isnt shitting the bed on purpose for all these years, she has to be due.

No way he’d leave the NE I’d imagine but he’s run a heck of a program at Vermont

The one thing i'm not sure coach gets enough credit for is the type of kids He brought in. Yes they can all play uptempo and shoot but more importantly they are high character kids. Thats what makes this so hard to take is the community fell in love with this team because of the caliber of kids and that is going to be damn hard to replicate. This group of young men left a mark on the soul of Terre Haute and its heartbreaking to see it end this way. I wish them all success in the future , I just wish it was't ending this way

I found a thread on the Buffalo (I think) forum that says he was interviewed for their opening in 2023. Doesn't hurt to inquire.
Always amazed me that Gonzaga, St Mary's, Vermont, Belmont (with Byrd) could hold onto their coaches. That's how it should be, but I'm just waiting for that to happen here. Seems like the only way it could happen for us is if a guy like Odum or Khristian Smith (that guy loves indiana State) turns out to be hell of a coach.

I also like the idea of at least testing the waters with Becker from Vermont. Bart Lundy at UW-Milwaukee is also a name that kind of intrigues me. Another coach that had a good run at D2 level.
