And Michigan doesn't really even NEED him. It would be nice and a luxury to have your alumni involved, but the fact of the matter is that very few NBA alumni are active within their schools. There are exceptions, but the overwhelming majority aren't.Michigan needs Webber far more than Webber needs Michigan. Last time I checked, Webber was doing just fine despite his "banning" from the university. He's also never going to admit to anything, so there's no point in worrying about it.
Perfect example of why the NCAA is out of touch and has idioitic rules in place!
But wasn't the disassociation mandated by the NCAA? Trying to understand how Michigan is at fault here at all.The article is obviously slanted, but it's written more as an opinion piece anyway. To me, it's not so much about feeling bad for Webber as it is calling out the university for it's shitty behavior.

In such instances, I think the implication becomes rather clear, that the player, more than the instituition, is to blame in such a case. I don't agree with that at all. Michigan knew full what was happening and bears even more responsibility than the players.
This is a story told to me by a senior Nike exec over a decade ago. Seems that webber was scheduled to have a major photo shoot with Nike and do some charity work at the same time.. If I am not having a senior brain fart, I recall it was at MSG. Anyway, there were photographers, a video crew, charity reps and a whole assortment of others waiting for Webber... Who never showed up. So they rescheduled... And Webber didn't show up. And a third time. According to the Nike exec, Webber not only proved himself to be a major a-hole, but cost himself several hundred thousand dollars as well. I don't recall the other Webber stories he related, but we were in a limo driving from NYC to Connecticut, and he told Webber stories the entire trip.

Michigan needs Webber (wants is probably a better term) much more than Webber needs Michigan. Simple as that...as far as the victim BS, where were his parents? And why didn't they do something? The argument that Martin has the POWER to change anything for Webber is crazy talk. Webber was the real deal, the best player of that time period, if not in the country he was in the top 5 for certain. He was going to play, he was going to go where ever he wanted to go...there was no avoiding it, there was nothing that Martin could do either way. Webber was not the victim, he was the willing participant and so were his parents.
But the disassociation crap is moronic as you say Boda. Stupid as hell! Makes the NCAA look like the angry old man down the street that yells at a kid for walking through the yard! The NCAA is so out of touch...and what do they expect when the NCAA is all about money, for the players not to be interested in the money too?

Hell, in contacting our hoop alumni for the "Where Are They Now?" segments I've done, very few stay involved with the program. Most are either casual fans or don't have any contact.
