'12 IL PG Fred Van Vleet (Wichita State Verbal)

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

We have 3 openings left for next year. Why do you think we are recruiting a PG?

I can only base my "figurings" on what is listed on the 2012 recruiting profiles page on here. I have no other basis or any other way of getting that info. According to that, we have currently offered four PG's. None of which seem to have the resume that VanVleet has, nor the familial connection that could be helpful in recruiting. That was my only point...

Right. I don't know either. Some offers may have been long shots to PG's that could definitely help us. Some may be combo guards. I just don't think PG is a priority for us. I would like to see scorers and bigs. With 3 openings and Brown coming in with the guards we have, it doesn't seem like a need.
I guess the staff makes the decisions and we just follow the news.

Very true. They don't miss often, as far as we can tell, do they? I just like to contemplate!!!

I was at that game in the video. That was my old high school he was playing against and they are a state power year in and year out. Fred torched them that night and also added 12 assists and 8 steals. Unbelivable game.

While the phrase "pure point guard" is often overused in basketball scouting circles, it cannot be emphasized enough when it comes to describing Van Vleet. What separates Van Vleet from the rest of the pack is that he is ultra-competitive, knows how to win and has a basketball I.Q. that cannot be matched amongst other point guards in Illinois. Van Vleet simply lulls defenses to sleep, consistently gets to the basket, never forces the action and as a result virtually never turns the ball over. While the one gray area is the consistency of his perimeter shooting, it has gotten better and Van Vleet can keep defenses honest from beyond the arc when left unattended.

We believe that Van Vleet has shown that he is clearly the best point guard in the state from the 2012 class. With Van Vleet's outstanding play not only at the Northern Illinois University Team Camp but also throughout the entire spring, he has now firmly entrenched himself in the #2 spot in our rankings of the top prospects in Illinois from 2012.

As far as Van Vleet's recruitment goes, reliable sources tell us that Van Vleet is now down to three schools--Northern Illinois, Wichita State and Kent State. He is looking to get the process over with soon--possibly by the beginning of the July evaluation period.

Had a chance to talk with Fred's mom today and he just recently visited COlorado and will be visiting Witchita State this coming week. From the sounds of things he is hoping to have his decision made within the next week and is leaning heavily towards the Shockers. Would love to see him in the MVC.

So Fred made his decision official today and made a verbal commitment to Witchita State and will be a Shocker. He was tired of the process and had built a nice relationship with the staff there. He will be able to sign officially in November. Here's to hoping he destroys the MVC...but not out Sycamores!!! GO TREES AND GO FRED VAN VLEET!!!:sycamores:

Just what I hear....................."Illinois has an abnormally weak class for 2012. 2011 produced the most D-I recruits of any state in the union and 2013 and 2014 are loaded with extraordinary talent, but 2012 is just plain bad by Illinois standards."

•wichitan1..... It would be nice to see in these articles if the players who commit to us have offers from other schools and who else they were considering...

Colorado State was the only other school that offered Van Vleet so far.

A response to some Wichita fans wondering why no "Big Schools" recruited this kid if he was the #1 PG in Illinois in this class.

well my only response is that anyone who has seen him play will be left with no question as to why he is the #1 PG in the state. I just watched him drop 43 in a summer league game and was making kids look silly all night. His one weakness was his 3 pt shooting and he has worked his butt off on that. TOnight he made 7 3's. Because he wasn't getting offers from "big" schools doesn't mean they weren't in contact. Bo Ryan and Bruce Weber both expressed interest for quite some time. Fred's biggest thing was that he just wanted the process to be over with and go with a good school that wins. He was not interested in developing a relationship with a staff this late in the game and I feel he made a great decision. Now he can just concentrate on playing ball and proving the doubters wrong.

Here's a couple short articles about Fred leading his AAU team to a championship over other more highly regarded teams this past weekend.

Talk about it in Basketball Recruiting Board

Winning the 17 and Under level of the Best Buy Summer Classic was Pryme Tyme who wasn't even one of the several teams that were selected to play in the Super Pools. The team from Rockford, Illinois did beat four squads who were Super Pooled and the team did it with hustle and team play. They were led by Wichita State committed point guard Fred Van Vleet who looks like he's already scaring Missouri Valley coaches.

Van Vleet and Pryme Tyme won the Best Buy Summer Classic

Pryme Tyme Takes the Gold

After winning their pool play games Pryme Tyme defeated the Michigan Hurricanes, Illinois Warriors, Atlanta Celtics, Houston Select Defenders, and Indiana Elite on their way to the championship. How did this team beat other squads with so many high profile players? Team basketball.

Despite taking the floor with a team that was all 6-foot-4 and under Pryme Tyme controlled most games from start to finish by playing team basketball and simply out working opponents. The Rockford group spread the floor led by Wichita State committed point guard Fred Van Vleet (Shocker coaches were present in the front row from start to finish of every single game) and picked teams apart with ball movement, crisp passing, sharp cuts, and the consistent playmaking of Van Vleet.

Van Vleet faced off against five star guard Kevin Ferrell, 2013's number one prospect Andrew Harrison, C.J. Reese, and others and Van Vleet out performed them all. In the championship game Van Vleet put up a stat line of 22 points, six assists, and five rebounds. And what was more important than numbers was the way Fred controlled the basketball game with flawless decision making. When he saw transition opportunities Van Vleet jumped on them. When numbers weren't there to run or when he saw one of the long Indiana Elite/Houston Defender athletes clogging the lane he slowed the game, positioned his teammates in corners, and then patiently used the open lanes to pick apart everybody he played. He has handles as good as anybody around , Van Vleet is a constant drawing contact inside (hit 10 of 12 free throws in the title game), and Fred showed shooting range in this tournament too.

Van Vleet was outstanding but he wasn't alone. Teammates Marcus Posley and Lamark Foote also played huge roles in Pryme Tyme making their run. Both of these players hit the glass with strong determination in the title game combing for 11 rebounds to counter the double-double of Hanner Perea who totaled ten points and ten boards. Posley struggled with his shot in the final but still contributed ten points including a pair of made threes, he dished out four assists, and played the type of defense that should put him over the top with low and mid major programs.

Everything about Posley can also be said about Foote except Lamark had his stroke going Friday afternoon. Lemark knocked down three three-pointers on his way to a 17 point game and he battled bigger players successfully on the glass. Posley is also a player who likely put himself in consideration with low and mid major teams who are looking for defenders and workers.

At seven feet tall Obji Aget had double-double numbers (or close to it) plus a couple shots blocked shots in four of the five Indiana Elite games that Gopher Illustrated looked in on. The only game he didn't was when Indiana had to go small to try and defend Pryme Tyme.

As a WSU fan I found this thread very informative. Mr. Kevin, you would be more than welcome to talk about your cousin over on ShockerNet! We're all very excited to have him join Shocker Nation!

I'd be happy to except every time I try to register it says I'm typing the confirmation code in wrong...even when I'm doing it exactly as it's shown
