Tre was skilled defensively, but had limitations at 6'7 in one-on-one matchups in the post against bigs like Krutwig and Prim. I am not saying the loss of Tre is fully undone, but Tucker could fill a huge void that our roster had just a few days ago.

If we are truly looking at our roster, why do so many expect such a large step back this year? We lost LaRavia and Tre and everyone else was a role player and their production was replacement level at best (Cobie, Bacote, Howard & Hankins). An argument could be made that their on-court production had negative value.
I don't view the additions of Henry, Bledson, Tucker & Stephens as major steps back. Crawford, Peterson, Wilbar & Hittle are all wildcards with much lower expectations.

Well it has been pretty well documented that last years team was our big 4 and then a MASSIVE drop off. So it is not so much that people are worried about the new guys being better than the role players leaving...It is that 2 of 4 players that carried our team to a winning record are gone.. Those were damn good basketball players! There is a whole lot of slack that needs to be picked up..Tucker is a nice long term add, but I think it would be foolish for anyone to expect him to be as effective as Tre was last season. the Stephen/Henry combo won't be as good as JL was a year ago at 4..So that leaves a whole bunch of FR and guys coming from D2 who not only have to outdo the supporting cast from last year (not hard), but also make up for the loss of JL and TW..I think that is where the skepticism comes in.

All that being said I don't think we'll be horrible..Key and Neese coming back will allow us to be respectable. This roster is still very much a work in progress and has major holes. We might add a guy or two that might change my tune..However, at this point I don't see us being as good as we were last season. And BTW that is ok, you don't bring in new blood to get better in year one..If you do then that's just gravy on top.

I don't have expectations of a 60 win percentage as last year, but I have also seen posts hoping we are no single digits.
Again, I don't expect Tucker to step right in and fully replace Tre's production. He should provide solid defense (4 blocks in 9 minutes against a very athletic Ok State team), but most likely a step back on offense. Stephens/Henry combo won't replace everything LaRavia produced, but we could also see increases from Cooper and Key in the new offense.
In year one, I would view a .500 record as a success. 40 and above is fine. Single digits with Key, Neese and others would be very disappointing.

Perhaps because there's been significant roster changes

Perhaps because the program is led by a former Div II coach unproven in the MVC

Let's see how the team, staff fare in the Valley and THEN anoint everyone a hero and SuperGenius Coach

Perhaps you can explain where my post stated anything close to "anoint everyone a hero and SuperGenius Coach."

Everything on this board at this point is speculation....Larry, Key and Neese all return as starters....we lost two MAJOR pieces in Tre and LaRavia. At this point their minutes will be replaced by combinations of Tucker, Stephens, Henry, Bledson & Henry. I expect some drop off here, but also think it is overstated to think this results in a single-digit win season. I have been pretty clear that I expect there to be a step back compared to last years .600 winning team, but the core of this team will compete.

I was replying to the thread in general vice your speculation but I'm glad you're willing to call it speculation.

I have zero expectations for next season; Schertz has some extensive experience in div II; he has little in div i and that was in the low majors and not a tradition-laden, historically excellent program.

Speculate away, I'll wait for the season to begin and see how they fare -- March or April 2022 will be a good time to assess the season

Haha! Well by golly...let’s all just log out until Spring 2022. I can’t believe there’s speculation on a message board prior to the season being played!

So, with Tucker (being his thread and all)...

Would anyone put a rickman comp out there? Perhaps a less deliberate offensive player but similar, “board it and dunk it,” player? If not a Tree, whom in the Valley of recent pedigree?

That's a doable prediction, but he's a lot better. Tucker has a better frame, he's taller, he can score in the post better, he had a nice post move in the tournament I remember from the Oklahoma state game. I also think Tucker is more athletic.

I'm trying to think of a comparison but almost a more lanky and athletic Darnell Brodie? That's a solid comparison to me. He's a good player, hopefully he pans out for us.

Andre was just another vivid example of GL's inability to recruit and develop big men. Thank God it's just a memory now. When I think of the Gant/Kitchell/Mahurin squad and what "could've been," my BP rises...

Agreed big-time Grant was better as a soph than any other year. Mahurin who I also forgot didn't stay for this senior year (So inspired by GL). Kitchell was probably better his senior year but not by much, he sure had a cutie wife and kid!

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head basketball coach Josh Schertz announced the addition of Dearon Tucker (Pronounced Dee-Aaron) (Dallas, Texas/Oregon State/Legacy Early College) on Wednesday.

pretty sure Mahurin's father and kid (naia) brother were more of an "inspiration" to RJ than (GL)

Looks like the coach has all the players he needs with 13 roster spots. Pending any further changes. Looks like a good bunch and good size. I noted Cooper is a junior as noted on the roster that is great for him.

Didn’t know anyone had the Brodie club in the bag! I see it.

limited FT attempts, but 72% is a number that helps more than hurts.

13 counting Mervis. We still could sign 1 or 2 more. You're right. All of the classes seem to be adjusted for eligibility.
