What's the point in entering the portal this late? Is it kids thinking that their teams new pickups are going to be taking minutes away from them?

That's a disappointing byproduct of the transfer portal. We've probably seen the last walk-on freshman that stick around long enough and improve enough to be starters their senior year. There's basically zero incentive to work hard/get better and earn minutes/starter status. If you're coach won't guarantee you started status before June practice even starts, just hop in the portal and go play for someone that will.

Could be. With only 25% of the portal being settled, they could be seeing opportunity is still out there. Also, I'd imagine there is some bragging about who got what so if they recruited someone and they're getting paid more, they could be like "I'm going to go get mine" if they think their coach or collective slighted them.

Also agree. Until there are multi-year deals or actual disincentive to move, they're going to.

"One Power 6 head coach told me that, with the transfer portal, he’s not recruiting high school guys this summer. He will leave it to the assistant coaches. “The only thing that will suffer will be my Marriott points,” he said."

Absolutely-freaking-lutely . Some players are gonna see who their coach just signed out of the portal and realize they probably just got bumped down the roster

I'm starting to think the market inefficiency right now is prep players. Nobody other than Calipari (who only really recruits top-50 high schoolers) is really focusing on high school players. Now, the chances are slim-to-none for keeping them for four years, but a school like ISU must find ways to exploit the market inefficiencies.

Prep players and Juco players would be good on the pocketboook. I think you also gotta go after D2 grad transfer shooters

That is why I made another sweep through the 247 and Rivals Top 250-300 lists last week to have a look. There are a lot of 3-star or higher kids that were sitting on their offers that likely do not have actionable offers anymore. Also, once you get past the Top 50 kids, most of them will not be able to command money IMO. Hell, I think Milwaukee just grabbed like a Top 20 PG this morning.

Actually came across this guy last week and I'd kick the tires:

How many known returning/committed players do we currently have on the roster? Vorst, Gray, Daughtry, and now Wagner. Am I missing anyone.

There's probably going to come a point where some of these good players still available get a little antsy.......so they take a lesser offer just to secure some peace of mind.

If you believe that, what are your thoughts on what Painter did at Purdue this year... lost 1 to transfer, a 1-yr transfer in exhausted eligibility and a walk-on graduated,
brought in one new HS (Colvin), for 24 my sister tells me Painter inked 6 HS, Prep School kids and had a handful exit, mostly graduates, both of the portal kids were fully expected from all news accounts...

Complete unicorn career from edey but painter seems to still work the "2d tier" (top 51-100) to legit "success"

all bets are off for next season
