I think Drake winning the league with a roster of former DII talent is going to make a lot of people pay closer attention to DII during portal season
I think a lot more mid-majors are going to recruit this route. Probably low NIL money and you get an experienced kid that potentially could be really good. Drake and last years team showed it can be done. Don't know how many p5s are going to go after D2 kids when they just fish from mid-major waters

I was referring to where the kids in the portal right now are coming from.

We need culture builders who are from winning programs. We lacked that this year.
I would argue our biggest offensive difficiency was the lack of play makers. We had Teel, but that was it. When I say play maker I mean a guy who is a threat to shoot, drive to the rim to finish and pass a teammate open. 2023-2024 team had 4 such players. Not sure guys have to come from winning programs if their style matches ours and they help fill voids/deficiencies If teams could give Teel any trouble we struggled to score efficiently this year or they let Teel score and stopped the others. Now, we really struggled defensively and that was likely due to our lack of overall athleticism. Hopefully we can snag some help in the portal with this aspect. I do think we get immediately help here from our Juco commit, Enel St. Bernard, too. Just listened to coach's interview on Joey O and the King and he said he's looking to add 3 or 4 from the portal, but won't know for sure until late next week who's leaving.

I know nothing about this kid or the competition he played, but the first thought is he is 5’9” and it has been said over and over a slam on Legree is he can’t get to the rim because of his size. This should be considered not just he scored a bunch.
Legree has a 40" vertical and is the best HS finisher at the rim that I have seen in 50 years. I think that will carry into college ball.
That would give us 2 short guys. Can we do that?
This guy took a lot of bad shots. We don't know how many bad shots he missed.

Legree can shoot. Not a problem. Why do you keep putting that trash on here. Unless you know something I don't know.
I don’t really want to jump into this Legree discussion, but I truly can’t understand your questioning of why some don’t think he’ll be any good.

His stats were pretty terrible across the board, including shooting. He was a turnover machine - worst on the team. A questionable decision maker, for sure. He did look extremely good in the layup line though - I completely see the athleticism you see.

I’m fine sticking with him another year to see how he develops, but he showed us absolutely nothing in the games he played to get excited about.

You said it. Wait one more year. He was 2nd on the team in assists in his limited minutes and started practicing late. His fg% was similar to Menser's his FR year. Let him get some experience.

Boy, you guys are hard on freshmen. Everybody was hard on Larry too. Do you know why freshman basketball and football players have been historically redshirted? Do you remember that Odum, Scott and Brown were redshirted? It's not unusual for FR to watch from the bench.
How much did Vorst and JD play when they were FR? We've had several good players that were redshirted or hardly played as FR except the ones during "lean" years when they played by default.

Here's some FR scoring averages:
Murphy. 1
Kitchell. 2.3
Gant. 2.4
Marshall. 3.1
D Brown. RS 3.8
Carter. 4.4
Neese.RS 5.2
We didn't have any non-redshirt Fr ave more than 9 ppg from 2006-2019.

Do you want our Coach to give up on FR?

Remember back in the day (10-20 years ago) when we had discussions here about the ethics of dropping a kid on scholarship because his play wasn't up to D1 level? We'd get HS coaches threatening to drag ISU's name through the mud for letting a kid go who was under scholarship. Interesting how much things have changed.

Figured this would be a good thread for this. But over on the redbird forum a poster had some NIL numbers from Drake and Bradley. For Bradley Hannahs was the highest paid guy at $140,000, Montgomery and Deen each got $75,000 which is actually surprisingly low for Deen as he was pre-season player of the year. Judging by those numbers i'd imagine Bradley was somewhere around $50,000 for the rest of the roster. That would put Bradley at $340,000 give or take.

Drake paid their 4 D2 guys around $20,000 each. In hindsight they were the absolute the steal of the century but coming in paying $20,000 for each D2 guy seems like a bit of stretch when i'm sure majority if not all would have followed McCollum just for the chance at D1.

It's also quite comical to see the other valley schools scrambling to see how they are going to keep some of their guys that are going to be getting $100,000+ offers when last year they were giving us shit for not being able to keep the roster together that was demanding north of $1,200,000

Interesting stuff. Anybody ever hear concrete on what our guys got on the open market?

The real question is what have they received from their new school? It probably hasn’t been the same amount they were told when they made the decision to go to a new school.

I think what is reported isn’t always what the final payout tends to be… shocking I know.

@SycamoreStateofMind probably knows the best on here. But I'd guess Kent and Larry 100k+ (maybe more), Swope 200k, Avila 500k+, Conwell 500k+. I could be way off but just call it a feeling

I had honestly knew at one point on all of these guys but I’ve discarded it from my memory because I don’t know what to believe and the numbers are so ridiculous I choose not to believe them. If that makes sense?!

Like, as I start to try and remember the numbers don’t even make sense to me or seem believable. I want to say Larry and Kent both got $250k a piece which is actually insane - but I think I may be forgetting and it’s possible it’s a higher number than that. It all runs together and I just don’t care what players that leave here make in the open market.

A long explanation to say - I really just don’t remember/know.
