WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

It’s a mystery partly because he is not even listed on verbalcommits.com, which is probably The most comprehensive player listing I’ve run across

Maybe 4 more. We're going a have to replace a lot of talent. A couple of grads and a couple of transfers? If we can to well this year we will be able to recruit at a highter level.

I didn't see Golden's tweet when I wrote this. I guess the correct number is 5.

Two of next year’s scholarships now taken?

Are you thinking both Miller and Holmes? I'm not sure HCJS can risk that. Maybe one since we'll have quite a few but I'd be shocked at both unless both are just gangbusters.

We do have 6 openings but still.

Risk? I don't see anything wrong with it..
Me too ..... its a new day in recruiting .... a walk-on gets a one season tryout .... if he is good enough to play and fits the team concept he can earn a scholly .... if it doesn't work for him or for Coach he can enter the portal with D1 experience. This particular recruit comes from a state where most stay at one of several schools instate AND "he wants to be here". Good luck Isaac Holmes!

Name the last team that has won at a significant clip after converting multiple walk-on to scholarship players within the same calendar year. I'll wait.

That's a good point. But it's not out of the realm of possibility, either. Maybe someone on staff is just a really good salesman? And don't forget Harry Marshall. Walk-on to All-Conference performer. But he's definitely an outlier. And also remember, even if both ended up getting scholies next year, we still have four to give away. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens! I hope they both perform so well that the earn those scholarships!

Right. Anyone pointing to Odum or Marshall is forgetting the 75+ other walk-ons we've had. Just saying it is a statistical improbability for TWO walk-ons to become scholarship players the next year.

Its a new day Jason. You above all on this forum should know that? Recruiting is not the same anymore. A complete roster turnover annually may become the new normal at lots of campuses. You build for the future you likely lose. Walk-ons may play a big part in maintaining "status quo"?

Odum wasn't a walk-on. l would say if they both stay 2 years there is a 95% chance they will get scholarships and a good chance one of them becomes a starter.
I don't know what your problem is. Have you watched Holmes or Miller play? I understand if you have not had time. You do a great job of maintaining this board. But if you have not seen them play, why would you comment about something you know nothing about?

I watched a highlight film (I.e cherry picked moments from games) of the young man playing against a bunch of kids that looked like me in high school and aren’t even close to Div 1 level. I’m guesssing this is the exact same amount of time you have watched the kid play. And that is supposed to make me think he is ready to contribute at a high level for a DI program.

And why is that people who think he might get a scholarship are allowed to comment and people who are more grounded in reality cannot?

Time will tell but if people are hoping that this kid pans out into the next Harry Marshall they are more likely than not going to be disappointed. Odds are against it and we don’t have the luxury of taking too many fliers on kids. We need to hit on a high percentage of kids we offer/get if we want to have a successful program. Grant Prusator and Brandon Burnett (among others) were on scholarship, and we wouldn’t not have been a successful team with ten more of guys like that.

I've watched game films of Holmes. I think he will contribute and I'm a pretty good judge of talent. Of course I'm not as good as you think you are.
As far as your comment on Q, I hope you say that with a smile on your face. Humor doesn't translate in forums very well.

It's a pretty low-class move to cherry-pick forum comments with hindsight and critique. Especially on someone that's been right as much as you have. But I'm not keeping score.
There have been times when some on here gave up on players too soon and I have seen hundreds, if not thousands, of players develop over 4 years. Experience is something you want to keep on your team if you can.
