Sounds like he is coming in now?
Yes, he is a 22 recruit.

And I believe he played in NC’s biggest class, so he put up pretty good numbers against (I would surmise) decent competition. Made the Sweet 16. I have no clue if there were other good players on his team.

I would wonder how many years there were when a coach had to fill 6 roster spots in one recruiting season (aside from coaching changes and filling gaps of lost players). Probably not many. It's hard enough to get 3 solid recruits in a given year, even with the volatility/fluidity in the system now. I think the chances now are greater than before for 2 walk-ons to earn a scholly but still a very difficult task.
I wish both players luck! Walk-ons have a heart!
Some players are overlooked but they know, themselves, that they have what it takes and want to prove it... those are the gems... hard to find.
Regarding Holmes... all data on him is slim. #8 guard in NC. Biggest class. Probably top 50 player in state. Offer from DePaul listed on twitter. I guess in Indiana we occasionally get a top 10 player that's an Indiana all-star. I hope Holmes improves his foot speed.

For those that have not seen him play - one thing that stands out is that he owns the boards. Reminds me of Bird or Cruse in that he goes after every rebound.

He's officially on the roster, hopefully Schertz will make an announcement of some sort...

Btw, with Holmes and all our other walk-ons, we have 16 on the roster for this year. Schertz specifically said, in an summer workout video, that he'll only be playing a rotation of about 9 or 10 guys (9 is more likely). So we will ABSOLUTELY have some guys who aren't playing many minutes (or who aren't playing at all) who are gonna have to swallow some serious pride and accept just being a guy on the roster and not a guy who sees the court.

Using football as a prime example; young kids need to work, improve and be patient. If one is talented, their time will come.
By definition, upperclassmen are more ready mentally and physically.
I don't agree with having to have your "best" on the floor all of the time, though. When I coached, I put a team on the field that was good enough to win, but all of the players accepted that they were not going to be playing all of the time, even if they were the best at their position. My policy was that everyone on the roster would play in every two games, and a lot of times, every player would start at least once in every two or three games.

WE HAVE TOO MANY GOOD PLAYERS TO PLAY 8 OR 9! 6 SENIORS? COME ON. IF ALL OF THE SENIORS PLAY HE IS ONLY GOING TO PLAY 3 UNDERCLASSMEN?

All I can say is the man is moving forward with the model that made him one of the winningest coach in the country the last 2 decades at any level. Whether or not that model works in Div 1 is yet to be seen, but he has confidence in his system and I like that he knows what he wants and has put it in place.

Wondering from the land of metric conversions: what would one need to get NIL-wise to cover the cost of an out of state scholarship to attend ISU? Toss in whatever you want in terms of taxes that would come down as income. One year to cover room, board, tuition, books, etc?

I smell an opportunity to land an extra body for programs willing to dabble.

I don't believe I have ever heard of a team having more than 13 players on any type of scholarship.

Last two seasons Syracuse had 17 players, in 22-22, it was a mix of 12 scholie players and 5 walk-ons -- is 17 the max head count for MBB?

in some seasons bo ryan had 18-19 players (or appeared to have) on the bench..

I think IU has several walkons normally, but only 13, of course, are on scholarship. I'll bet there is a max.

many teams have a handful of walk-ons annually, pretty much an HC prerogative... I think the NCAA limits the ## in uniform, on the bench game to game but if a school wanted 10 walkons and dress three game to game - not sure where the "advantage" lies the ncaa would regulate... now, if a school started grey-shirting a bunch of kids to entice them to go to big state tech vice little liberal art college - the advantage is more clear

'course - the NIL nightmare has made 98% of ncaa "regulations" effectively null & void

There's not a max on walk-on players allowed on a roster, but you can only dress 13 players for a game.

That can't be right. Don't our walk-ons dress? And play?
It’s right.

Some walk-ons dress, but not all for every game. We also generally have some redshirts mixed in too, so they’ll also alternate dressing for games.

Our walk-ons have received some playing time in the past because we only had 1-2 most of the time plus injuries. Now we have 3 walk-ons plus a completely healthy scholarship roster at the moment. The crunch for court time and just to dress for games will be interesting.
