Todd Golden has done lost his mind. First Jake Odum isn't good enough to carry the Sycamores and now this #headshaking comment on twitter?

Has anyone considered what it cost to fly, feed and hotel a football program?? Well its roughly $100k and with the injuries and the ass beating you have to ask yourself if the $350k is really worth it in the grand scheme of things?

Let me follow that by saying that I am a fan of these pay games and I'm glad we had a chance to step on the field with Penn State today. But to suggest the money is all that really mattered in the grand scheme of things is really thorowin in the towel in my opinion. You Play To Win The Game!

It's also a chance to get some national attention. I prefer a money game like this to playing Cincinnati, NIU or even Indiana. Don't think he was trying to make a major statement though.

Hope the injuries weren't too sever. Young got up and insisted on walking himself to the bench. Would hate to see a senior lose any significant time to injury. Also hate seeing the promising freshman injured.

He might not have been trying to but he did. He's been talking about the pay day all day. I think what its done is allow us to forget what the point in playing the game in the first place is. I don't want to debaye the reasons a pay game like this makes sense for us, because I agree with them. But let's not forget why you play the game, at the end of the day a loss is a loss and a win is a win. I play (who ever I'm playing) to win... Anything less than that? Well....

It's a good test for the team early. See how you stack up. Starting the season against a bunch of Butlers wouldn't do us much good. I think our D did some really great things today. Obasecki especially!

Some great punting by Santino Davis, too!

Ok totally agree, whats your point?? I'm not debating how we played or any of that. I've made no comments about how we played, other than we got our ass handed to us and we did. They went second and third team on us in the 2nd half ok. I'm not going to talk in the football forum like I do in the hoops forum, I aint gunna pretend to kno the game well enough to debate about it.

I wasn't trying to counter anything you said actually. I was just commenting about the benefits of playing a PSU and the good things I saw today.

Of course they went second and third team on us in the second half. That's what typically happens when an FCS school goes up against one of the better Big 10 teams. Truthfully, 41-7 is a fairly respectable score as these games go. Our D had a lot of positives today. That's a statement more generally, not aimed directly at you and your post.

You get a little too intense on these boards at times. Sometimes when people post in a thread you started, they're just sharing their thoughts.

Additional thought, the one down side I see to this schedule is that we won't get a true picture of what kind of team we have this season until the WKU game. I expect the Sycs to be the dominant team next weekend. Ideally, you would start with a cup cake and work your way up, not go from being the cup cake, to playing a cup cake, to playing a low-level FBS team whose skill level is tough to judge.

Remember 2 years ago this team lost to UNI by 50 and 3 years ago to WIU and SIU by 50+. I know our D Line got to the QB a couple of times, but the defensive players of the game were not on the line. They were manhandled for the most part. The program needs the money that comes from these games plain and simple, and the "side" benefits are getting the players the opportunity to play on a big stage and see how they stack up (which I guarantee you most of whom are interested in learning first hand), which can also help recruiting.

It wasn't just our Dline that got to the QB. We had LBs and DBs doing it as well. We don't have a stout Dline. We're small and quick and usually apply a 3-4. Against a smashmouth run team like PSU it's going to be difficult. That said I think Obaseki was most definitely a player of the game.

Beside the $$$ and good TV exposure the Trees got something that money can't buy today. Everyone wearing ISU blue and white today learned something about their game, both individually and as a team. If you are a competitor, and I believe everyone of our kids are, you gain valuable experience when you go against someone better than you, again individually and as a team. I believe every ISU football player and coach learned something today that will pay off later this season.

Hey, these guys have pride. I wouldn't want to be Butler next week. Dawgs think they have something to prove for their conference. The Sycamores will prove that they are better than the casual observer thinks they showed today.

When I see how other teams did on Saturday.....

Virginia Tech beating up I-AA power Appalachian State 66-13.

Also, Akron losing 40-0 to Ohio State.

Cinncinnati hammering Austin Peay 72-10.

Arkansas beating Missouri State 51-7.

Alabama beating Kent 48-7.

Nebraska beating Tenn.Chattanooga 40-7.

I agree with that, Bent. Any chance that we would play it close were basically dashed when they had a 95-yard kickoff return. That pretty much killed the karma it would have taken to stay even. It was brutal to watch at times but we will take something away from this game and hopefully it is positive. Hopefully the injuries are not season-ending and we will be prepped and ready to kick some serious ass against Butler next weekend. I was not surprised at all with the outcome, especially knowing that Louisville and Cincy are not near the level the Nittany Lions are.

Still proud to be a TREE~

True about the return, Bally, but I didn't find watching that replay brutal at all. Sure it was easier to watch knowing the outcome, but it was also easier to watch when thinking about how far we've come. Our team two or three years ago could have lost this game 70-0 and that would have been with Penn State doing its best not to score late in the game. Sycamore fans, of all people, shouldn't have any difficulty finding perspective.

To add some perspective to Tom's earlier post, no FCS team beat and FBS team today. NONE! UNI came close but it was against Iowa State and Iowa State is about as bad as a bottom tier MAC team.

"Sycamore fans, of all people, shouldn't have any difficulty finding perspective". Great comment Bent

I hope you are correct, Bent. I certainly feel that way. Ironically, the toughest part of the day was receiving "live" pictures from the game from my buddies (primarily Charlie, our new AA exec Director) who were at the game I wanted so badly to be at. It wasn't meant to be I suppose, but I am still proud. Can't wait to be in Terre Haute, next Saturday with many of you guys to root them on this time to a "W."

actually Sacramento State beat Oregon State and Richmond beat Duke so those were 2 wins for I-AA over I-A schools

I stand corrected then. Sacramento State over Oregon State is definitely a surprise, but Richmond beating Duke isn't much of one.

I agree...the difference in this game was the line...on both sides of the ball. Yesterday clearly demonstrated to me the difference between FBS versus FCS schools.

Our LB and defensive backs were pretty active yesterday...we are pretty fortunate that we don't have a lot of injuries.

Offensively, we could never get a running game going...all of our pass plays were quick pops to the receiver because there was no time to set up...a WR route longer than 5 yards was too much time.

Defensively, PSU offensive line pushed our D-line back 5 yards every play...they had a surge forward most of the day.
