Yeah Alabama situation is wild to say the least… I think you at minimum should have suspended Miller in learning of his involvement in the shooting. I don’t know - this just seems pretty typical of the world we live in today. Not a whole lot of accountability anywhere you go.

WILL MILLER FACE CHARGES?

Tuscaloosa's chief deputy district attorney, Paula Whitley, told AL.com regarding possible charges for Miller: "There’s nothing we could charge him with.”

Birmingham defense attorney Richard Jaffe told The Associated Press that prosecutors would have to prove that Miller knew a crime would occur, and Jaffe hasn’t seen anything to indicate that he had knowledge or intent.

“Without the element of knowledge and intent provable, there’s not really any way legally that he can be held accountable,” said Jaffe, a former Tuscaloosa prosecutor who is not involved in the case. “People cannot be held accountable for someone else’s actions unless they know what they are and intend that criminal activity occur, specifically in this case that a weapon will be used."

This has nothing to do with Chicago. Stay on topic or don't post.
Where's the ORIGINATION of the news piece? You're getting as bad as NPR...btw, did NOT your HS history teacher's every touch upon the Pullman Strike in Chicago and the ties w/ black labor migrants from the South as "strikebreakers?" Now do see the connection w/ the Chicago NBC affiliate?

It’s an AP syndicated report that was posted across hundreds of news sites. I am a Chicago sports fan and saw it there.

So lets not stop at Chicago. Give me geopolitical tie ins for every city and town it was posted in. Tell me about Clearview, PA. Portland, OR, Middletown, CA, Abilene, TX, Jefferson County, MO, Webb, AL, Reno, NV, all of TDS Telecom's coverage since they posted it to their main portal... they have coverage in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin. Oh, all of USA Today, Fox Sports, etc. coverage areas, too.

So no, I don't see the connection you attempted to derail this thread with. Do you have ANYTHING on the actual fucking subject of the thread?

If the young man was a walk-on, would he still be on the team? Or would he still be on the team but serving some type of punishment?

I found this quote from an article by Connor O’Gara interesting….”It’s unthinkable that showing up late to practice could be a punishable offense but being accused by police of supplying a murder weapon is a “play on.”

Kind of sums it up for me. I understand that “legally” he cannot be charged, and I am fine with that. We are a nation of laws and if there is no crime then he shouldn’t be charged with something just to make others feel better. The state of Alabama can make a decision if they want to make future actions like this a crime or not. But for the program to just treat this like kids will be kids is another sad example of where we are.

For a young man to get a call from someone at 1am and ask for his loaded gun, after you had dropped him off at a bar earlier in the evening, where it is very likely had he consumed alcohol and you never stop to ask him why he needs it?call a coach or teammate for help/advice, show up without the gun and just talk him into going home, or just don’t bring it to him and do nothing,……basically make any choice other than to hand him a loaded gun….

It’s something he will have to live with the rest of his life. But more likely people will continue to tell him how great he is and all will soon be forgotten. Pretty much anything can be excused away in the 21st century.

Thanks for the "syndicate" clarification, but how could anyone determine THIS by visiting the link you posted citing NBC-Chicago?

Meh. I typically take the opposite opinion of ESPN on literally everything. Bilas is a company man - he speaks the language.

I disagree a lot with Bilas, especially WRT paying players because all he cares about is high major sports, but he's right about the kid having rights. We either value them as Americans and they should be always protected to the death or we don't -- zero nuance there.

You know the answer to that. He would have been bounced or mothballed due to the optics alone. Walk-ons would be very unlikely to receive any benefit of the doubt that a scholarship athlete would, let alone one of the top players in college hoops.

As for the rest of your post, it certainly makes sense to us. Certainly at this age. However, I think can think back to college where I got a call from friends stating they needed some backup and we loaded up the car without thinking about it. Now, we weren't packing guns, but we were always down to do stupid shit due to our ages and hormones.

Where I'm conflicted in forming a view either way is I don't know the interpersonal relationship between Miller and these other kids. If I'm running with the wrong crowd and one of them leaves their gun in my car and calls me, I'm probably getting it back to him as quickly as possible since I know my future is at risk. "Hey B, you just dropped me off but I left my gun in your car." On my way. Kid has been projected as a Top 3 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. I certainly don't give a shit what he does with it, if I'm being honest, because I know I'm staring down a multi-million dollar payday here in a few months.
