Bet Missouri State fans don't like hearing that. The reality of the matter is Cuonzo has done a nice job putting that program back together and will likely move up the coaching ladder soon, although recent history would say the Moutain West would be considered a lateral move? $480k a year is some nice change in the Mountain West.

Isnt' the Wyoming job a meat-grinder for coaches? Not so much the pressure as it's a tough place to recruit to?

Oh, sorry -- that might be taken as a 'slam' against the fine folks of Laramie and Wyoming.

It has been difficult. I'd imagine if they are willing to pay that much for a coach, they'd probably offer a bigger recruiting budget, too. New Mexico is a difficult place to recruit as well and Alford is landing bigger players out there. I think if you get a top flight coach, he'll get the players and Martin is a rising star right now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but at least New Mexico has lots of tradition that they can use in recruiting, right? Does Wyoming have that? Seriously, I don't know, but I bet Little Eddie can fill us in!!!

Just a surface glance...

Here are the basics of the cities and program overviews:

Laramie: 27, 204; metro-area 57,298
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyoming_Cowboys_basketball
NCAA Champion – 1943
NCAA Elite 8 – 1952
NCAA Sweet 16 - 1987
16 Conf Championships (Reg Season) – last in 2002
2 Conf Tourney
UWy -- 1905 105 1,378 – 1,042 .569 (does not incl 2010-11 season record)

Albuquerque: 541,615; metro-area 869,864
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Mexico_Lobos_men's_basketball
NCAA – 2nd round
9 Conf Championships (Reg Season) – last in 2010
3 Conf Tourney
UNM -- 1900 107 1,338 – 1,022 .567 (does not incl 2010-11 season record)

UNM gets more pub due to metro size; the site of the 1983 NCAA Championship Game; more well-known coaches...

Have to believe it's easier to get a kid into Albuquerque than Laramie

Don't forget that New Mexico's basketball court is named after one of OUR coaches - Bob King!!! He was a really great guy...

I've traveled BOTH Albuquerque v. Laramie within the past month & the ambient difference(s) are obviously clear. Sante Fe is what, 35 mi N.? It's a retirement haven for 60's hippy-type artists & pretty neat. My favorite radio station in ALL of the U.S. is located here. Wonderful arts/humanities community(s)...anyone been to the Hard Rock Cafe Casino S. of Albuquerque & N of Los Lunas? Nice...

I love the Native American color schemes in NM...really makes life stand out.

unless MSU puts out some serious dough it would be a definite raise lol

As a MSU fan yes i am concerned but just because they want him doesnt mean he wants them and as for a raise he is currently making 300,000 with another 100,000 for premotional apperances and media deals (Tv, Radio).

Also there is a group of boosters already planning to increase that pay. With JQH and MSU being closer to where he wants to go I imagine there is nothing to really worry about with Wyoming. Only time will tell.

I thought that 300 was his current salary including promotional appearances...at least thats what I have seen...

Number on the radio this afternoon was 300,000 + 100,000 for premotional but that was radio i know he recieved a raise before the season as well as an extention. We will see what comes out but judging by the booster emails he wont be leaving cause of salary.

I think Cuonzo is a hell of a coach, but I hope you guys don't get caught in a Southern Illinois pergatory. Long term contract extensions at (for mid-majors) exhorbitant salaries benefit only one party - the coach. And, as we've seen at SIU, they can cripple the university athletic department.

Not saying that Cuonzo isn't better than Lowry - he is. At least that's what it looks like right now. Frankly, though, I hope he stays. The conference was better back when we had big-time stability in the coaching ranks...

I really like what Cuonzo has done at MSU. For the sakes of the MVC I'd like to see him stay put because he's one of the better young coaches in the country and gives the MVC a little star power in the coaching ranks as most fans throughout the country still remember him from his Purdue days.

Went to a wedding down there about 10 or so years ago...loved Santa Fe...definitely unique and I'll agree w/ the color schemes aspect. Didn't spend much time in Albuquerque (other than the airport...drove around their campus really quick before flying out, seemed nice). Laramie is small...very small. Though they've been known to land quality Chicago PG's in the recent past, it has to be difficult to recruit to...whoever takes this job has their work cut out for them. Pokes were good back in the days I went there...Fennis Dembo and Erik Lechner...and after them they had Theo Ratliff and Josh Davis who both wore NBA uniforms (Theo moreso than Josh). Haven't seen much since though...I do not keep close tabs on the Cowpatties these days. I have too many other teams that I follow... :)
