Obviously disappointed with the USI loss, but we can redeem ourselves with a road win against the Dukes and taking care of NIU. Go into the remaining conference games 11-2 and I think we can agree things are fine.
However this is going to be a very difficult game. They are big, long and athletic and offensive rebound like crazy. We’re going to have to have a better shooting performance especially from 3.

Gonna be a long week…

Spot on. Duquesne is very big, very athletics and active so if we thought USI was active, we're going to get run off the floor against the Dukes unless our guys refocus. Getting Neese back will be huge because we've seemingly lost the ability to shoot over the last 3-4 games. The fact we were winning is a testament to the guys but everyone needs to work on their shot.

Can't have our supposed three point specialist throwing shit off the side of the board.

Yeah, sadly I think we get the Drake @ Richmond treatment in this one. I started to think this team was special, but perhaps it was just overblown due to a weak ass schedule. Watching Drake play so poorly after we narrowly beat them at home started me thinking we had fools gold. Now that we lost the Southern Indiana game i am really starting to think that. Hope i am wrong, but I doubt it.

Yep. Where I’m at… We’re capable of beating anyone and getting really hot and capable of losing our God Damn minds and losing to everyone.

Duquesne lost another home game today against New Mexico State so they won't be kind hosts. It doesn't look like they draw many fans though.

How did the Aggies field a team, much less one that was allowed to leave the state of New Mexico?

Are 1-2 players and a coach or two still under investigation for that shooting in Albuquerque?

For your viewing pleasure, below are the Kenpom stats. Although Duquesne's defensive statistics aren't great, they are being dragged down in two very specific categories: Offensive Rebounding % and Three-Point %. Those are two areas where we have struggled lately. We don't generate many second-chance opportunities, and we're not the most prolific three-point shooting team right now. Duquesne also fouls a lot, but we don't attack the rim enough to probably take full advantage of that.

On the other hand, Duquesne has some tough bigs. Although they have some shorter guards that bring down their overall team height, they have 4 guys at or over 6'7" that play a lot of minutes, and those guys attack the offensive glass. Austin Rotroff, a 6'10" monster, is the #1 player in all of D1 in Offensive Rebounding % at 22.5%. For some reference, our best offensive rebounder is Avila........at 6.5%. If the USI game is a preview of this deficiency, we're about to get a master class on how to get our asses handed to us on the boards.

Otherwise, let's be honest...Duquesne is not all that good. They only beat Ball State by 1 at home, and they've lost their last two home games by double-digits to Marshall and New Mexico State. Their best wins are against Colgate on a neutral court and against UC Santa Barbara at home, which aren't all that impressive. Marshall likes to play fast like we do, and they were able to get up and down and exploit Duquesne's big lineups. Provided we stick to our strengths, we should be in this game.

The offensive rebounding prowess and shot blocking ability of Duquesne is enough to worry me where I'm not going to predict an ISU win, though. I think we lose a tight one: 83-79 Duquesne.

I really appreciate these pre-game kenpom analysis posts. I was going to try my hand at it several games ago but I’ll just wait for yours.

Watch them on ESPN+ replay against New Mexico St. and you'll wonder how we could lose to them. Shot 4-25 from 3.

Sadly, I don't think this one will be close. All the reasons you just mentioned statistically are big reasons we will get beat, but perhaps the motivating factor that they have lost 2 straight at home is the biggest reason. They are good at things we are bad at and they are hungry.....bad combination. DUKES 81 ISU 68

I cannot imagine they will be more hungry than us. We will not lose by double digits. I don't know if we can pull out the win (Philadelphia is a famously corrupt city, so they will probably get their refs from the dockyards), but it will be a close loss or a comfortable win.

They are a really tough team to figure out. On paper they look like they should be dominant, but they just...don't dominate. They have an upcoming game against DePaul at home that should be interesting. DePaul plays at a fairly fast pace and likes to put up threes like we do, so I'm curious to see how Duquesne attacks them.

Also, I want to see if Duquesne's last two games are an anomaly or a sign of bigger issues. We might be playing a team on a downward trend. Maybe.

I thought Duquesne was in Pittsburgh?

Here is another comparison site I found their the Duquesne board:

Not sure what they draw, but on ESPN it says their arena's capacity is only 3500. ESPN also thinks Duquesne has a 58% chance of winning.
