I can’t help but fixate on Scott’s missed free throw towards the end of the second OT.

Just so many chances to win and we didn’t seize the moment.
Nah....sure these guys made some mistakes, but they were getting exhausted and Scott is coming off illness that only let him play 5 minutes last game.....that dude was shot and giving us everything he had. If we want to put it on the piss poor start then, okay.....but the blame goes to coaching for the overtime rotation debacle....just unreal to not use your best rebounder and most athletic guy in nearly the entire 2nd half and overtimes

I had edited my original post. Didn’t intend for it to come across as particular critical of Scott. He played his ass off. Just one of many examples of missed opportunities for which we didn’t capitalize.

Funny that sometimes you miss things when you’re at the game and watching up close…what I didn’t miss was yelling at the coaches to put ESB in the 2nd and 3rd OT’s…then I come on here and everyone else saw it too. Vorst was dog tired (no knock on him) and just not getting over to protect the rim then especially in OT3, #10 just killed us.

Nothing but good things to say about the guys that played really though. Thought Jo could have exploited their smaller guards and got to the rim a few times.
It’s easy to second guess a lot of things in 55 minutes of basketball, but we have a team that will fight and not back down…I can live with that.

Fun and exciting game and let's hope all the Valley games won't be like this or we'll have to hide Coach Graves for health reasons! story of the game was clearly missed FT's and the inability to get defensive rebounds! Big games by Camp, Ian, Dereck and Xavier! By boy Jo Van hit a shot that will be remembered for a VERY long time but overall had an awful game with the turnovers. Team showed some heart and character rally back from an awful start but just couldn't keep them off the offensive boards and missed a TON of FT's and several bunny shots. Correct these issues and let's get some Valley dubs!

Where the hell was St. Benard in the OT's??
I really want an answer to this.....It's just unfathomable why he never saw the floor the last 30 minutes of game time.

Edit.....I guess my irritation with him not playing when I thought he should clouded my memory of when he played in the second half. He did sub in and out until the 6:30 mark of the 2nd half, which means he never saw the floor in the final 21:30 of game time.

It was the day before our first MVC game day and I had to wonder...

Why can't the NET 188 team beat the NET 135 team at home? Out-coached at the end and 13 missed free throws.
Will this be our first home attendance over 5,500? 4,719
Is Bradley really as good as they think they are? They beat us, time will tell.
Or are they just another team made up mostly of portal transfers still trying to find themselves? They made some clutch shots.
Are we truly a better rebounding team than them? 55-49 Bradley.
Should we be worried about the 191 turnovers their opponents have totaled? No.
Or worried that they've only totaled 116 turnovers themselves? They only had 8.
Could this game come down to our 74% FT vs their 72% FT? Free throws are very important in a 3OT game.
How much will they rely on Jaquan Johnson? A good amount, but they beat us with numerous guys.
Is it a good sign that their opponents shoot 35% from three? We shot 34.2%
Which of our guys will we be talking about after this game? St. Bernard and his limited minutes.
How many dogs will perform in the halftime show? Anyone who went to the game wanna share?

Can't disagree with any of these comments. I thought our guys who played busted their asses, especially in the OTs when they were gassed. Huge props to Derek, who far exceeded his single-game minute total. HCMG did say on radio post game that we need to give Camp and others more rest in case we have more games like this. I thought this was the most Schertz-like we've looked like offensively in the past two years. Cutting and passing (even Sterling, once) were much better.

Hope we have something left for Sunday.

I know the student crowd was non-existent due to Christmas break, but there were a lot of people around where I sit who normally come who were not there. It barely sprinkled going into the HC and I wasn't wet at all. Hope we don't have to get another team like two years ago for people to get back into it.

Go Trees!

Hey Sycamore fans, I'm back!

I just ran down my second preview of the trees after watching the Milwaukee game. Check it out! https://bubraves2006.substack.com/p/second-chance-points-indiana-state

I plan on doing a full preview, but since some of you haven't been watching the Braves much, I'll toss over a few points:

  • Jaquan Johnson has arguably had the best season to date of any player in the Valley - he's just impossible to guard going to the basket and he's tied for 1st in the country in steals per game (6.0). He's gotten way better beyond the arc and is the engine that makes the Braves go.
  • The Braves are incredibly inconsistent from three - some nights they can't miss and then other games the entire team can't hit anything. This has led to an erratic season.
  • It's true the Braves don't rebound well, but neither do the Sycamores, so I don't really think that's a huge factor.
  • Stylistically, both teams are really similar
    • A lot of 4 out, 1 in sets.
    • Vorst v. Jonovic are similar players and I'm curious to watch that matchup.
    • Huibregtse is a lot like Camp Wagner, just shooting a much higher percentage, but otherwise similar players.
    • AJ Smith and Scott are similar builds and another matchup I'd watch - obviously Scott is the better player to this point, but Smith may be able to slow him down some.
  • Turnovers will be huge - Bradley is elite at both not turning it over and also turning over other teams. If the Sycamores can take care of the ball (their turnover percentage is 262nd in the country), it bodes better for their chances to win.
  • The Braves don't drop off when freshman Montana Wheeler comes in - he looks like a junior or senior out there - doesn't turn the ball over and can run the offense well with Johnson or without him - reminds me a little bit of Hall when he plays with Van Buggenhout in that respect.
Anyway, I look forward to it - always seems like games with the Sycamores are entertaining.
This was another one for sure. Seriously, how tall is Johnson (minus the hair)?

I’ve thought about this. I’m not ok with this loss. I don’t care how hard they worked. It was for nothing. I fear we’re witnessing a slide back to the Lansing years where moral victories counted as much as real ones.

This game was a huge disappointment. We should have won. Our players lost because they don’t practice enough free throw shooting. Our coaches lost because they didn’t know what adjustments to make, and they left a pivotal player on the bench.

I’m not ok with losing. I hope the fan base hasn’t gone back to that already.

Yeah… I’m pretty much in agreement with this ^ A lot of hype about a half court shot to tie the game. It should have never come to that in the first place and the half court shot is only cool if you go onto win the game - it literally means nothing now and we gave the game away multiple times.

The second half turnovers. JVB other than the half court shot being totally haphazard with the ball. The lack of usage of the bench - they had fouled out two of their best players and we refused to put fresh bodies on the court in the 3rd OT it was malpractice. Sterling gave you pretty good minutes at times and was fresh, Enel was fresh, hell given how gassed Scott and others were I’d have probably even run Walker out to see if he could get us an easy bucket. Our guards kept running the pick and roll off the top and almost every time we got forced baseline side into no man’s land and we just kept doing it - it worked early because the swing pass / kicks outs were open but they closed them down pretty good down stretch and we just kept going to it. And finally the missed free throws… ugh

A lot of people are encouraged - this whole idea now we know we can play with anyone is bull shit. That’s the softest shit you can say. We also know we can’t close out games, can’t hit free throws, can’t take care of the ball when it matters - all at home to boot.
