Sycamores win 80-66.

TSU shot 25-59 (42.4%), 12-23 (52.2%) from 3 and 4-4 from the line. Had 35 boards, 14 assists, 22 turnovers, 3 blocks and 3 steals.
Sycamores went 31-67 (46.3%) from the floor, 5-21 (23.8%) from 3, 13-19 (68.4%) from the line. Had 39 boards, 16 assists, 11 turnovers, 8 blocks and 13 steals.

"If Truman is missing their top 8 as Renn keeps saying, we'd likely be looking at a double digit deficit as I imagine that group takes care of the ball a bit better."
I missed why the top 8 didn't travel: assume either possible COVID or disciplinary?

They never said, but my guess is they had to quarantine because those were the guys that played against UIndy, who was supposed to be our opponent and then had the outbreak.

Saw some flashes but pretty rough guys. Some of the new guys should help us -- hard to keep track with the video and audio very poor.
Are the announcers locked inside a vault ? I was hoping there would be some piped in crowd noise and music but man sounds of silence. Also they gotta put the time and shot clocks on the screen, I know the setup is affected by lots of things but gee wiz they have several weeks to figure some things out.
Purdue will be a challenge (understatement)
I'll be watching.

He appears to be a smart, heady player. He had a nice play late where he saved it off a TSU player. Had some nixes passes on the break. Has a little Odum in him. He just has to make sure that he doesn't make easy passes too hard. He had a couple that were pretty simple that he made flashier than need be.

He does remind me a bit of JO as a freshman. Nice vision, flashy passes, questionable outside shooting ability. If I se him drive baseline and jump pass it will be eerie.

Hope he absorbs everything JO can teach him.

I see a self-proclaimed pass first guard that had a player ahead of him during a FB that tried to dunk/layup and missed... nothing smart or heady about it. The heady pass-first play would have been a pass ahead to JL.

you’re right. He sucks. We should trade him.
😀
The way JL played today, I’m not so sure the smart play wasn’t to keep it.

He's not a "Lansing type of guy" but I thought Hankins played pretty good in spots. He wasn't afraid to attack the rim - made a 3 and got fouled - got to the line another time. Went 1-3 from the line but none of our guys shot foul shots very well.

After yesterday I would be very concerned about how well this team can defend dribble drive - we got exposed by a very non athletic group. Mostly just a product of over playing everything...

Other than Tre Williams - it just wasn't an overly impressive D1 performance. We didn't look all that athletic and fast to me. If you're not going to play at or above the rim in this day and age then you better share the ball well, take care of the ball and shoot the shit out of it. I just don't see that as our identity at all.

Saturday should tell us a little more to the story - it will be a much better measuring stick than the first exhibition game of the year. I said before the game I wouldn't walk away feeling any better or worse about our team based on the game. I'd retract from that a bit - I thought it was sloppy and gave me more reason for concern that optimism.

But it's a long season... So we will see.

I liked Julian Larry and how active he was was trying to get in passing lanes and applying pressure. He has the potential to be a big time assist/steals guy in his career.

We didn’t see a ton of Ndaw, but I like his length and aggressiveness. One play that stood out to me was he attempted a block on a 16-18 foot jumper by a guard, which he really had to come a long ways out of the lane for. He didn’t get it, but it was impressive how quickly the big guy got there.

Our “2nd unit” seems to have more scoring ability than in the past. I like how Randy Miller, Howard, and Hankins came in not afraid to attack. This will only improve when Barnes is ready.

I think this is a fair take based on the game yesterday. You could say we were either unathletic or they didn't get up for the opponent and you can make a case that is equally as bad.

My biggest two issues coming out of yesterday were: 1) we shot poorly from beyond the arc despite getting quite a few open looks and 2) our perimeter defense was really bad and it stemmed from poor dribble drive defense as you alluded to.

I know Purdue is down this year but they are very talented and shoot the ball well. We will need much better defensive intensity to stay with them or they will likely just pick us apart. That 7-4 freshman they have is also averaging damn near a point a minute and shooting like 75% from the floor. Whomever is guarding him needs to put a knee in his ass when he is on the floor and push him as far from the hoop as possible to keep from giving them essentially free buckets.
