"I share everyone's concern about losing Odum, but I'm sure we all agree that we need a good big. I just hope we can get one. We also have to remember that a lot of the things Odum does in HS to score will not be available in D1."

Have you seen Jake play? I have seen him play nearly 20 times over the last couple years and i think he will be able translate his game to the next level. His ball control and ability to make people look silly will still be there. His uncanny ability to find an open player with passes most wouldn't dream of being able to make will still be there as well.

there's a shot clock and he won't be able to dribble for 40 seconds.

You think that matters....? He only does that now because that's how they run their offense and its legal. He has the ability to do anything he wants to with the ball at the high school level and they play against some of the best competetion there is in high school in Indiana and pretty much, the midwest.

yes i think it matters. he's a dribbler and sometimes habits are hard to break.

high school is not division I; it's a big jump

I'm just saying I saw Printy play part of a HS game and you are underestimating him. There is no question that I can evaluate talent better than you can and I guess all of the MVC coaches must agree with me about the Eitels.

part of a game? evaluate talent? one word tedmorris.

being mr. basketball or even a candidate means more (in a talent and basketball ability sense) in some states than it does in others. so does the level of competition. in some states, mr. basketball wouldn't even be honorable mention all state in indiana

I was talking to Morgan.

I just get irritated when know-it-alls get on the board and act like they know everything. I guess they are trying to be cute or funny but they just sound like idiots to me.

me too

What is so impressive to you about Pritney? (I am not to worried about the spelling of his name). Please explain what makes him so good in your mind. Does he have a good shot? Sure he has a good shot (Doesn't shoot enough to be honest, but whos fault is that?) He had what 5pts today? What else does he do that impresses you? He is a below average defender, he doesn't pass or handle the ball that well.

From what I have been told Jake Odum will come to Indiana State next year. He will not explore intrest from other schools. I am pretty confident of this.

Local playes at todays game:
Lucas Eitel
Logan Eitel
Jake Odum
RJ Mahurin
Justin Gant

If we could land Gant in 3 years I would be thrilled. I see him going big time with his size, foot work, shot. He is a solid player for a Sophmore in High School.

This is a great day for ISU. Lucas and Logan can play. They're fundamentally sound and they hate to lose. They defend, pass the ball, and shoot it well. I've seen them play since they were in junior high school. They have always been good.

Actually, all four recruits can flat out play. They will all be on full rides when possible. I don't think any will opt out of attending ISU. They seem to really want to play together. They know each other very well.

Many don't seem to realize these kids are not recruited much for their accomplishments in high school. All four recruits had big time aau experiences, and all played with and against the best competition in the country.

I will also say that the recruiting rating services are a waste of time. The good ole boy network seems to dominate this process. Coach Brad Miley took Jake and the Eitels to most high profile events and did better than anyone expected. If you pay to attend some of the developmental camps and work-outs, it's funnny how your rating will improve.

The Eitels would play for any school anywhere...and yes...they dominated the Classic. However, Jake wasn't too bad either. Also, RJ scored 30 against Marshall; Rockville only lost when a last second shot went home for MHS. That could have gone either way.

I'm very, very happy with the direction of the program. We are recruiting the best local kids. It seems like this is what most were wanting. We just need one big, mean post player to solidify the future.

In all fairness to RJ they only have 1 scholarship and he earned it. But I think the 3 walk ons are all better than RJ and will have better college carriers than RJ. It was a pretty smart move on RJ's dad and his move 2 years ago to go to the Tribune Star to commit to play for Indiana State as a Sophomore in High School. It brought a whole lot of attention to RJ and people like that kind of thing. Hes a local kid and he pretty much said I am going to Indiana State whether they give me money or not. It was a brilliant move on his part. Because I contend that he would not have been recruited by any other D1 programs and he is going to need a lot of work to make an impact at this level. Never the less I am very happy to see them adding good local talent.[/QUOTE]

RJ Mahurin accepted a verbal committment from ISU after his 10th grade year and responded with a verbal committment of his own.

If you know how these things work, it's nothing like what is being described above! RJ never agreed to go to ISU without a scholarship, nor was that ever considered.

He actually was continued to be recruited by most D1 schools until he signed his letter of intent. You may not appreciate him or his abilities, but he has a very good chance to make the All-State team.

I realize he didn't go to TH North, but he is pretty good.

I don't have any idea how the careers of these kids will work out, nor does anyone else. I have seen tham all play with and against each other. We will be better. We will care about each other. We will play hard. It's going to be fun. Some will develop quickly; some may not. They are all good players, very good players.

Message boards are fine and they give fans places to be heard. It's just unfortunate that some continually spout off facts that are untrue. I guess the need to sound like you know what your'e talking about allows you to take liberties with the truth.

I do not have a problem with RJ at all and am glad to see him come to Indiana State. Why because I question his (speed, physical presence, mobility, and hes soft) do you have a problem with that. I am not judging the kid before he steps on a division 1 court who am I to do that? I am just saying what I have seen from him and granted he has an excellent shot and passes the ball very well.

Not sure what the Terre Haute North comment was about? I never have been associated with Terre Haute North in any way, shape, or form.

If you are suggesting my presentation on how what RJ did was not accurate then that may very well not be true. I have talked to some people and that's just kind of the way I saw it. Believe it or not some people can actually look at things on the outside and form an opinion about them. That's what a message board is for and then you have every right to disagree and set the story strait. I won't argue with your depiction on how this went down because I don't know the facts. But for you to sit here and say that I continue to say things that are untrue is bogus. Just because you don't like the fact that I have an idea/opinion on everything and most of the time they are logical doesn't mean you have to get all up in arms and say I don't know what I am talking about.

Being overly critical of freshman is a silly thing to do. The high school players you're all so high on right now are likely to struggle when they first make the transition as well. There is a reason players are better by their third and fourth seasons. Hopefully, McKenna has put together a good crop of young athletes. What worries me is that they don't give 100 percent effort more often. That you don't teach and it can come at any time.

I really don't care what you question or what you think. That is your business. You are fully entitled to an opinion. Your opinion is obvious. RJ is no good and he can't play at ISU.

RJ may or may not be a good college player. Only time will tell. I can say that I've seen him play with and against the current team members, and he seems to fit in nicely. I also have seen him play rather well against all the other recruits. I think they know the score right now.

I do have issues with you passing off infomation as fact that is not. Your version of the recruiting process was pure fiction. Your statements and your implications were obvious. You simply knew nothing about which you were speaking, and I called you on it. Sorry to hurt your feelings, but I am entitled to an opinion as well as you. Your comments that RJ would not be recruited by any other D1 program and that he somehow manipulated the press to get a scholarship are quite telling.

I don't get on these sites much and I rarely ever post. However, I do like to set the record straight now and then.

I apprciate your insight.... It was simply how I saw it through my eyes and had no factual basis. Thanks for setting the record strait. I have been wrong before just telling you how I saw it.

I do not understand why you feel so strongly that I don't think RJ will be a good player at Indiana State. I mean he is going to be pretty tough to guard for a big at the D1 level coming off a pick and stepping back and pulling 3s. I have seen the kid play several times and he is a nice player so don't make it sound like I think he is terrible and can't play! Because that does offend me and is anything but the truth!

I told you what I think his weakness are, but again who am I to judge... The kid can flat out stroke it I have seen him score 40+ on more than one occasion. I don't want to hear anymore about me thinking he would not be good in college. All of the stuff that concerns me were the same things they said about a guy from French Lick. To slow, to soft anything else. So don't come at me.

Ill step up to the plate and say I dont think the success RJ has seen in High school will translate to Div I basketball.

1. He plays for his father on a class A school.
2. The offense is ran to get him as many touches and points as possible.
3. His attitude is all wrong, every missed shot of his is not due to a foul. He will struggle greatly with the physicality of Div I basketball.
4. He cannot create his own shot, not at all
5. He cannot guard another 6'8 power forward in college, will be a huge defensive liability
6. Should redshirt his freshman year.
7. Couldnt get his shot off in open gym playing with current ISU players.

Why is the "sycamore fan" so defensive of posts about Mahurin? I think people are pointing out obvious concerns about incoming players. I don't feel this is an attack at him or any of the recruits. The "sycamore fan" needs to realize that not everyone views his son...ehh I mean the Mahurin kid, the same way he does. No doubt RJ is a solid player, but he doesn't need his dad to defend him every time someon criticizes him. His Coach/Father has been his biggest drawback since day 1.

That's interesting. I've heard numerous rumblings about RJ's father being a frequent poster on different internet hoop sites so I guess that may hold some truth. I'm pretty sure sycamorefan was the one that referred to RJ as being the next Larry Bird and from reading about the Rockville Rox up in the Region Roundball Rumble:

http://nwi.com/articles/2008/12/26/...ports/doced715bd941bd7342862575290036332f.txt
Rockville's R.J. Mahurin hopes to be the next Larry Bird / nwi.com

I would suggest that he do his son, team, and school a big favor......shut up and let the chips fall where they may. RJ seems to be a good kid with a lot of upside, but I would tend to agree that the four years of "coddling" he received from his father in high school will do him no favors when he enters into the fray of D-1 basketball.

Very well said Free throw. Im sure he is a great kid off the court, no question about that at all. But I dont think the bubble he has been in will help him at all. He should have been in the weightroom for the last 2 years to add to his offensive skills, and allow him to do better with physicality........I hope Im wrong about him, time will tell.

I want to stay out of this one for the most part. I was not posting to offend anyone. I was just saying what I have seen from RJ as a basketball player but I am no expert.

Fact of the matter is mesg. boards are usually pretty ruthless esp. when you are talking about the Sycamores who have had sub par teams the last 4 years and things don't seem to be look all that good any time soon. People it's time to win some ball games or starting kicking people out the door!

I have no idea if Sycamorefan is RJ's father or not but my message to anyone with family or even close friends on any team would be to STAY AWAY from message boards. They are bad news! People get things wrong on message boards and people talk trash on message boards. Your feelings will get involved and it's just not a good situation. This is where the old "Don't read the headlines" phrase comes into play. Athletes are put under the microscope on a daily basis and if you are going to play in Division 1 sports you might as well get used to it.

This is just one example trust me their are hundreds of others just like it.
I mean for example look what the media did to Greg Oden when he got to the NBA. They loved him until they found out he was hurt and was going to miss his Rookie year. So he worked hard to get himself back in shape and by fate the first game back on National TV he hurt his foot. So then the questions started to poor in everyone analyzed the kid. He was just 20 years old but they called him a bust called him the next Sam Bowie. Said he couldn't play in the NBA. How did they figure? He has won at every level took Ohio State to the National Title game as a Freshman while shoot free throws left handed put up 20, 10 and 5 blks in the National Title game at age 19 but he still was going to be a bust. REALLY! Now how do you think Greg felt reading those headlines, how do you think his family and friends felt when they opened the paper or turned on Sports Center to see Greg belittled and degraded? Message boards are not for players, families, or friends! They are for fans! If you are afraid you are not going to like what you see don't read the mesg. boards. Its not worth it!
