I don’t think anyone on here believe any of the games are “fixed” against State. It’s pretty simple, we’re ISU fans and we’re gonna call it out in the heat of the moment when Jabo gets smashed twice on one trip.

Jason also pointed out how many times Hannah from BU set his wide stance picks and went uncalled a couple weeks ago. Fast forward to last night and he got called for it at least twice against Drake.

It’s really odd after all these years people think there’s not going to be complaining about the stripes.
Almost half the posts in game are about refs. Make shots and it doesn’t matter. Make the FTs and it doesn’t matter. It was probably a blessing they didn’t shoot more FTs.

But are you telling people what to post? Again, it’s fans in the heat of the moment. What’s the difference in someone posting: “Blank needs to start driving and not settle” vs. “Start calling and moving screens…we’re getting hacked in the lane.”

Got to a live game and fans every where yell about calls. I just don’t get why people are coming on a message board saying don’t complain about refs. It’s basketball at all levels…

Please show me where I said “don’t complain about the refs”.

I didn’t quote you….and I asked a question. Pretty much people can discuss what players are doing and what officials are doing in the heat of a game…what else are you to post about? It’s conversation..

The point is you can go to any game and listen to people yell about officiating…this is a message board where people are not at the game, they post about what they see…the game of basketball has been played a long time…maybe that will change when we get the robot refs. 😀

Hell yeah I complain about refs. I watched 10 CBB games yesterday from various levels/leagues and we have workhorse defenders like J Larry who continually gets called for a foul when he beats his guy to the pick on a high ball screen. Refs don’t have to make a call on contact but decide to and make themselves part of the game. In the Big 12, Larry gets an illegal screen/no call. It’s annoying because I see how hard he works and smart of a player he is. Not to mention, these centers are 4 feet wide at their feet, that’s a foul in the new rule book.

Only caught bits and pieces of the game yesterday, and I’ll admit there were a few times where I thought we just didn’t have enough to get it done. I was thankfully able to watch the end of the game and while we made a couple of big shots down the stretch (Swope’s baseline mid-range jumper was huge) I thought MSU really blew their opportunities when it counted. That was the feeling I had about us in several games last year too when we were on the other side of these games, so I take this one as a positive that we once again found a way to grind out a victory. This team has poise and a championship mentality, and that’ll carry us a long way when the shots just aren’t falling like they usually do.

Our KenPom ranking dropped 2 spots with the win, and I’m curious what it’ll do to our NET.

Complain away. It will eventually make a difference and brings so much to game day discussions.

Was there a "heated discussion" between our coaches and the MSU coaches near halftime? I didn't notice anything but there was a post on the MSU board. Jeez, had to wade through 4 whole pages of posts.

I post on here like i would if we were sitting near each other or at a bar. I’m biased toward but i also ref basketball. I feel like other coaches in the conference get officiating to lean toward them. JS and GL before him don’t seem to get that lean. Robbie has a lot of questionable screens and they havent been afraid to call those although ive seen a couple per game they don’t call. Other teams have guys out there looking like Orlando Pace on a pass set or Marry Lou Retton doing the splits in a Floor routine during their screens and not getting called in the same game.

I try not to judge the refs in a game in which I care who wins. If I think a referee is of questionable judgment, I wait until I see them again on TVwhen I am neutral to the outcome to make a decision. Then I have the benefit of multiple camera angles and a closer view. It is amazing how much the referee improves in those TV games.

My fellow Sycamore, NOTHING we post on here will make a difference to what happens on the court during a game. LOL.
I know this. Like I said, just complain about officials in every game. I will chime in to keep the conversation going against the calls and we won’t worry about bad passes and missed shots.

For me it isn't even about missed calls, it's about calling the game per the rule book. For the last several years, the NCAA Rules Oversight Panel has made illegal screens a point of emphasis but they're still absolutely awful in our league and not officiated correctly. On most nights I'm usually 4 screening college hoops and both the Big Ten and MVC are just illegal screen heaven and the officials just completely turn a blind eye to them.

The actual rule:

Section 35. Screen

Art. 1. A legal screen is action by any player, offensive or defensive, with or without the ball, which, without causing contact, delays or prevents an opponent from reaching a desired position.

Art. 2. In establishing and maintaining legal screening tactics, the screener shall:
a. Stay within his vertical plane with a stance in which the inside of the screener's feet is no wider than shoulder width apart. The screener shall not lean into the path of an opponent or extend hips into that path, even though the feet are stationary.
b. Not be required to face in any particular direction at any time.
c. Be inbounds.

Art. 3. A player shall not:
a. Cause contact by setting a screen outside the visual field of a stationary opponent that does not allow this opponent a normal step to move.
b. Make contact with the opponent when setting a screen within the visual field of that opponent.
c. Take a position so close to a moving opponent that this opponent cannot avoid contact by stopping or changing direction.

Art. 4. No player, while moving, shall set a screen that causes contact and delays an opponent from reaching a desired position.

Art. 5. When opponents are moving in exactly the same path and direction (one behind the other) and the screener slows down or stops and contact results, the
trailing player shall be responsible for such contact.

Art. 6. No player shall use arm(s), hand(s), hip(s) or shoulder(s) to force through a screen or to hold or push the screener. When this type of contact occurs with the torso of the screener, the foul should be assessed against the defensive player even though the width of the screener's legs may exceed the legal limit. If the contact by the defender is with a screener's leg that is too wide by rule, the foul is on the screener.

Art. 7. Screeners shall not line up next to each other within 6 feet of a boundary line and parallel to it so that contact occurs.
a. Screeners shall be permitted to line up parallel to a boundary line and next to each other without locking arms or grasping each other, provided that the screen is set at least 6 feet from that boundary line.

In the exhibit I posted last night where Ju almost lost his shit, not only did Benson violate Article 2A but he also violated Article 4. He is significantly wider by the time his foot is planted in the 2nd frame (when he is already in violation for being farther than shoulder width apart) and he is moving into the screen as you can see the shadow of his foot off the ground in the first frame. What Ju got whistled for is Article 6 which cannot happen before the separate violations of the rule by Benson.

This happened on the majority of the screens and when you realize how many easy points Mason got around the rim, uncalled violations start to add up because there is a mathematical compounding to everything that goes into that such as foul trouble where then we have to back away from defending properly, attacking the defensive glass, unfavorable switching, etc.

I'm not faulting Benson, Clay, or the Bears. If the refs make the correct calls the first 4 minutes of the game, the players will adjust and stop doing it. These guys aren't stupid... they will continue to use everything at their disposal to their advantage until the officials make the calls as they should. Likewise, if our guys are doing this shit, they should be whistled appropriately, too.

I've said my peace on this one. Onto Illinois State.

Ill guarantee you if other refs were watching the game together they wouldnt have a problem talking shit about bad calls but they also will give guys credit for hard calls they got right. Its not like high school where maybe having 3 refs on the floor should be applauded. These guys are generally good and get paid well for their trouble.

One example of a great call they made was on Robbie. It was down low i think after a offensive rebound. Robbie ended up behind their big guy and when he went back up with it they called Robbie on a foul. At the time it looked clean but the replay showed Robbie give hime a dumb little belly block type shot. Great call.

Boom! Similar to Hannah pushing Robbie out on the in bounds play and Larry called for the foul in regulation against BU. Fans cheer for their teams and call out officiating. Yes, it goes both ways!

I’ll move on too and just go enjoy another Super Bowl. 😆

If I had to sit next to someone who spent as much time complaining about the officials as some people do on this board, I would never go to a game.

Pick a random page of any of our close game and it is not uncommon to have 10-12 of the posts (out of 20) on the page about the officials. And it is the same complaints every game. Fire of an email to the league if it all bothers you that much.

Don’t care if that’s what everyone wants to talk about but it gets boring after awhile. I just pointed out it’s why I never bother to jump on during a game.

Our illegal screen of choice that both Robbie and Jabo do is giving the defender the ole Ass Blaster 3000. Jabo will often spin and get some extra oomph into it. My guess is since it usually gets called, he wants to get his moneys worth.
