You guys really haven’t been around too many rugby games, have you? If you think your average rugby player give a shit how he tackles someone, you must have a head injury already. First of all, they play the game with virtually no equipment but a thick cotton jersey. The rules are much more geared to sportsmanship, ie dirty hits, low blows, or unsportsmanlike conduct. The injury rates are high because the game is brutal. It’s a beautiful game but it takes a certain type of guy (or gal) to play it. It’s been played the same for centuries and don’t expect any big changes anytime soon.

The average NFL player didn't give a shit how he tackled someone. That's kinda how the NFL is in the position it is in.

I know I have a head injury. I ate lead paint chips as a kid, breathed in asbestos and played me some foosball for years. If you don't think rugby will be affected, you must have a head injury. They're late to the party but they are now ramping up heavily with Oxford, Cambridge and others doing a joint brain study commissioned by the Rugby Football Union.

The RFU, alongside leading academics from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Queen Mary University of London, The Institute of Occupational Medicine, University College London and Oxford University are studying the possible link between a history of concussion and neurodegenerative disease in former rugby players. The Drake Foundation has committed over £450,000 to funding this research.

You've also had the first groups of former rugby players coming out in 2017 and publicly stating they are donating their brains to science. The NFL had their first players come forward in like 2011. Again, late to the party but it's coming. Head injuries all around! Cheers... I think? I can't remember.

I dont think I could have been around less rugby games. Im aware that it exists. I know EIU had a women's rugby team. A friend of my always posts on Facebook and I think saw some Australian guys dancing before a game, but I wouldn't bet that they weren't Australian Rules Football players. I probably couldnt be more apathetic toward rugby, BUT, like I said, I HEARD that they have to tackle with their head behind the runner.

It's addicting once you get comfortable with all the "rules". I have been way too wimpy to play the game but I hang around dozens of players who play or have played on the INDY team for years and even know a guy on the World Cup USA team. They are balls out guys and that's the way the way they live their lives too. Drop in Connor's in Broad Ripple on a weekend and many will be there. Great food too~

And they won't call any of it consistently. The NFL is getting really hard to watch. The games are ridiculously long. Compare an NFL game that lasts 3-4 hours vs a soccer game that last two hours at most.

It's like watching Valley officials week to week. I've watched 3 preseason games tonight (had them on in the background) and there is just no consistency from crew to crew, game to game.

Officiating in general has just really decayed. I know the NFL hired about 20% of their officials full time but it's time to ramp that up to 100%. If you want to implement all of these rules to protect your product and viability, I understand, but you've got to have an exciting and watchable product. It's quickly becoming anything but.

Perfect example of NfL games being unwatchable,.....and why I rarely watch an NFL game anymore.

Watching a game and team punts the ball with 52 seconds left in the first quarter,.....three minutes of commercials.

Game starts back up, team runs ball twice for three yards, end of quarter, three more minutes of commercials.

Come back from commercial break, 3rd and seven. Throws incomplete pass, punts. Three more minutes of commercials.

I realized that in over ten minutes of having this game on my tv, I had witnessed four plays that gained a total of three yards. Yawn.

That to me summarizes a current NFL game. Because often times you only have access to one NFL game at a time, and because I don't watch commercials, I have started to find numerous other shows to watch on Sunday's as I channel surf during the 800 commercial breaks the game provides.

Basically, NFL games are incredibly boring.

NCAA basketball isn't far behind due to media time outs. MTOs are one of the worst momentum breakers in sports at any level.

i think the officiating issue is terrible fans at the lower level and mid level guys taking all the good games. Plus everyone on earth is a coach. A lot of those hits get called because they error on the side of the penalty. I think they need about 2 more guys in the field and to make the rules easier to follow so younger guys can move in and do it too.

But a college basketball game is still over in about 2 to 2.5 hours. I agree the media stuff is bad, but you go to a college football game that is televised and it feels like you're sitting there for an eternity. Be thankful if one of the teams runs a lot. If you're watching two spread offenses running hurry up, you could watch years of your life pass before your eyes.

I dont think a long game seems boring because of the time. its more the level of play. 48-10 is boring. a close game will keep my interest most of the time. Most things they are doing now is to keep the length of the game around 3 hours. When Dino Babers was at EIU and probably still since then, he had the Baylor mentality of running as many plays as possible which really extended a game but the scoring kept people interest.

It feels long when there are a lot of stoppages as described by others here. If the offenses are struggling and there are a lot of breaks for commercials, it can get long and boring.

Seems a stretch to attribute all of those behavior changes to a concussion. He was 12 going on 13, a time when kids experience a lot of behavioral changes anyway. All that said, it's obviously not good he experienced concussions, especially that young. I don't think kids should play football at that age, but there is a lot of things parents let them do that they probably shouldn't, including many other things that result in concussions.

I just dont think the headline was reflective of what "might" have caused it. I suspect "One Hit" didnt cause it. I wouldnt argue that the years of head contact and a concussion mixed with other non football related factors all lead to it. I could see One Hit causing long term brain damage, just not spiraling to a suicide.

I think 7th grade would be early enough to start contact football. no need to be doing it at age 6

Looks like some players don't care about stinkin' rules.

That’s a BS hit. Having watched really only 2 games (the Colts) I can’t really comment league wide - but Colts players seem to be really flying toward the ball - yet attempting to play a really clean style of football. I’ve been impressed by both the quality and discipline on display so far by the Colts.

Yeah, definite cheap shot. The one thing I have noticed is quite a few safeties have stopped hitting receivers coming across the middle. I've also seen some receivers make themselves look bad because they're expecting to be hit and look at the safety only to lose the ball.

What I don't get is how they expect these athletes to stop themselves in mid air. I've seen this call more than the helmet to helmet stuff and I just don't understand what they expect them to do.

Agree - always loved the interviews growing up listening to some of the hardest hitters ever talk about “trying” or not playing the game half speed - they played all out at all costs.

I haven’t seen enough games to be fair about the officiating - but from the two games that I have seen it has been called fairly clean.
