The assumption seems that if Schertz leaves, then the players will all follow. Is that necessarily the case? While Schertz recruited them and they signed up to play for him, they also signed up to play for Indiana State. It's their school. They have friends there, they have professors they like and they are being treated like rock stars these days. Also adding to the comfort level would be if Schertz bolts and a familiar assistant like Graves takes over. A career move for a head coach doesn't necessarily have the same appeal to a 19 year old college student. College kids aren't as motivated strictly by money as adults. To a student player, the lights in the A-10 aren't all that much brighter than the MVC.

Is it completely illogical to think the players could get together and decide they are assured of having a true magical season at ISU next year if they stick together? If the NIL money has increased as some of you are saying, it doesn't seem that far out of the ballpark. Will Junior Warbucks think his investment is all that great if Schertz shows up empty handed?

I worry about if the players follow how the rest of the semester goes as far as treatment toward the players by other students and fans. It would be and feel awkward at best.

If the rumored $2 million in NIL is accurate, as the Million Dollar Man once famously said:

Doesn't pretty much every D1 school go through this? I don't think it would be much different here.

But, that's also why the transfer portal should probably not open until after finals week. If we're still pretending that they're still students first and athletes second, that is. If you want to argue "that would be too late to register for fall classes at a new school" I promise you there isn't a single D1 school that's serious about athletics that wouldn't be able/willing to let a star basketball/football player pick their class schedule as late as June/July.

Yeah, they're not students any more. I used the story of coaching colleague whose kid was a QB at Purdue back in mid 2ooo's. Kid had only 21 days in the 365 calendar year that he was not required to be on campus involved with football in some manner or another EVERY day....and he couldn't take classes after 1 PM in order to be available for football.

I know nothing of how the NIL money distribution takes place, but IF we've raised as much $$$$ as folks on here are saying, then possibly take some of that to entice a core to stay? IF certain players mentioned really love STATE, there's a chance. However, HCJS has a REAL bond with most of these kids...his interactions with Robbie and the story HCJS has told EVERYONE about still having the message from him saying he's coming to STATE speaks volumes about how much he means to coach.

When I played here we couldnt take classes after 2pm because of practice unless it was a conflict that couldnt be avoided

Most get online overrides anymore. But I know Robbie and Jayson took at least a few face to face over the past year.

This team is a unit and gelled together and all complimented each other, Will they have the same success if they leave?
Thats called synergy. Where 1+1=3. And I've thought all year this team has that; where the sum is great than the whole.

That's what made them so fun to watch, they needed and used each other to become better basketball players. Really a special group together

Hi. I've kept up with this page a bit through the season. What a ride. I figured I'd pop in to say that Josh loves ya'll. Truly, I'm not blowing smoke. As fans who support this team, I can say with certainty he appreciated everything this community did. I can say with certainty this was a gut wrenching choice for him.
