The Recruit Level
Hello Sycamore fans from New Rochelle, NY, home of the Iona Gaels.

Just wanted to wish you guys good luck against us (but not too much that you'll beat us!).

Unlike you, everyone in Iona land is thrilled with our match-up against you. Having been in your shoes last year I'm sure you're all on pins and needles for an at-large, but from afar it seems like you have enough quality wins to get the bid regardless of if you drew another team in the BB match-up or if you drew us. From our perspective this game is a win-win situation, since we're playing on the road against an RPI top 50 team and unlike last year we're playing without the pressure of any at-large discussion.

Also, a little bit about our team in case you find this helpful.

It's no secret that we are a high-octane run and gun team. This is both our greatest strength and biggest weakness. When the team is shooting well from the perimeter we are extremely tough for anyone to beat. We like to play extremely quick in transition and look for us to try to get up the court at the speed of light both off misses and makes. On the other hand, our run-and-gun style has cost us a lot of games that we should've won, since the system causes us to wear ourselves out a bit, and more importantly, give the other team more possessions than we should late in the game.

Don't be fooled by our RPI in either direction. We can be a LOT better than the 95th best team in the country on any given day, and we can also be a LOT worse than that, as well. We are a very dangerous team for anybody when we're on our game. We're led by Momo Jones, an Arizona transfer who can score with the best of them in the country and is deadly from the FT line, however also has a history of forcing some bad shots when it counts the most. We have a SG named Sean Armand who is one of the best 3 pt shooters in the nation and can shoot with multiple hands in his face. Our interior presence is pretty light, although we do have one kid named David Laury who just became eligible for the 2nd half of this season who is an absolute beast inside and can also take you off the handle and score from outside.

We've had some tough losses this year and played the first half of the season without Laury, which probably cost us 3 wins or so and about 20 points in the RPI. We've also had some impressive performances (on paper at least), notably crushing Wake Forest by almost 30 and beating UGA down in Athens.

Also, while our program is on the rise, we have become notorious for blowing leads inexplicably and not being able to win close games over the past few seasons, and deservedly so. We blew an NCAA tournament record 25 point lead to BYU last season, and this season has been marred by more of the same on several occasions -- as recently as last weekend we lost a 5 point lead with 30 seconds and the ball to drop a first place conference match-up against Niagara. Bottom line, if it comes down to a tie game with 30 seconds left I wouldn't be too concerned if I were you.

Anyway, here's hoping for a great game between our two schools. Looking forward to learning more about you as well, and of course cheering you on the rest of the way (in all games other than the one against the Gaels, of course!).

With all do respect, If it's a tie game to Iona with 30 seconds left I'm going to be concerned...

Iona known more for cross country than good basketball. If history is any indicator this game will give us trouble.

if your basketball team runs as fast as your cross country teams we're in big time trouble!

and I am with SSOM, if it's a close game, or tied, in the last :30 I will be concerned too. This game will probably go like all our other games, we'll start slow, get behind, come back, get a lead, we'll slow down, let you guys back in it, then it will come down to the last possession for the win.

Welcome to our little corner of heaven! Glad to have you, and looking forward to the game. I'm the idiot that started the "Iona? Really?" thread. It really had little to do with your team, more to do with the fact that there were higher RPI teams that went to teams with worse RPI's than ours. Now that the matchup is set, I say - let's get it on!!!

How deep do you go? We regularly play 10 in our rotation. With your team's style, I just assume you have a deep bench.

Anyway, welcome!

Our team has very solid depth at the guard position, but pretty thin at the forward position especially since we lost Shawn Jackson who was a 6'9/240 Murray St transfer. We were 10 deep for most of the season, but then we recently lost Alex English, who provided a 3 pt spark off the bench, so now we're realistically 8-9 deep. Depending on the match-up and who's in the coach's doghouse we'll find ourselves playing anywhere from 7 to 9 nowadays.

If we're shooting well from the perimeter and Laury is controlling the boards I think we have a real shot at pulling off an upset against you guys. But if you get Laury in foul trouble early we have no depth at the forward position and pretty much stand no shot whatsoever.

Our coach rarely isolates or deviates from his "game plan," so if Larry gets in trouble, it's his own fault...

Welcome! Were are glad you are here. It sounds like this will be a game of contrasting styles. Like you, we are never sure which team will show up--the one that can play with anyone or the team that . . . .well, I'm sure you know what I mean. Where would you suggest we look for a similar site for the Gaels?

It was posted in the Bracketbusters thread.

if you look at the Iona roster, nearly every one of their players transferred in from a different school. I didn't see many who started their careers at Iona.

And looking at the campus on google earth, that is a very small campus, if I am looking at it correctly.

I see where they're in the MAAC...wasn't Fairfield (fellow conf. member) in that ESPN Orlando Tourney last season? We kicked their butts...:shocked2:

How did Iona finish in '12 compared to Fairfield?

Will be interesting, but I'm not sure you'll be able to run much against us. If you are successful in doing that, odds are you're going to beat us. We seem to control the tempo of pretty much every game we're in. You guys average 80ppg and we've only had two teams score more than 80 on us -- UCLA and Ole Miss. We like to make games ugly.

well fabulous, our bracketbuster opponent Iona just lost to a Marist team that has an RPI of 297, so kiss Iona's top 100 RPI goodbye

We don't know where Iona will finish by season's end. This expectation that our opponents owe us something with their performance is what annoys the hell out of me about college basketball. Let's stay focused on us.
