I was listening to the Dan Dakich radio show here in Indy yesterday (Tuesday) and they were talking about Bloomington South.

One of the kids at Bloomington South that he mentioned, Spencer Turner, is the son of former Indiana State basketball player Scott Turner. Scott played on the 1978-79 Larry Bird-led teams. Spencer is a junior, I believe, at Bloomington South.

I know that J.R. Holmes, the Bloomington South coach, may still be mad about what happened to one of his former players at Indiana State, but I was just wondering...how good is Spencer Turner and should Indiana State take a look at him (and that's assuming that they haven't already done that).

Not going to happen. Holmes can not stand Coach for what he did to Cole. I believe coach made the right choice. Just my thoughts.

since the kid's dad played at Indiana State.....

just go around the coach...and straight to the family...use Bob Heaton or somebody as the go-between....lol....

How many game minutes did his dad get? I can't recall ever seeing him play in a game! Same genes...I'd stay clear of Gloomington. The 6'8" Pritchett kid now playing for BNL (he's also a Jr.) has far better pedigree than Turner.

So we're never ever going to get a player from Bloomington again?

Also, I didn't follow the team very close before I was a student at ISU, so can someone break down the specifics of the Holmstrom(sp?) deal? Thanks.

Please don't go there. That almost started a civil war...:violent:

Absolutely -- the recruiting proces can be ugly w/ HS coaches or AAU coaches (not to mention the gang of 'advisors, family friends, concerned locals, "cousins", etc, etc, etc)

Whether or not Holestrom could cut it... -- completely different question and as scholies are essentially 1-yr contracts, then I've no problem in K-Mac pulling the scholie but inviting Holestrom to remain as a walk-on.

I don't think Turner is as good as JP or AC. Not sure he could help us.

Does anyone know if we're recruiting Greathouse at Col. N. I saw him and he'd not bad.

Should I or Shouldn't I?

Get into this topic once again? Let me direct you to this thread that should give you some pretty good specifics: http://www.sycamorerunner.com/showthread.php?t=3194&highlight=holmstrom

I still don't see how anyone could think this was a good thing that happened, but what's done is done now. Just don't understand how cutting a local kid, a good kid and a decent basketball player was a good thing? Let's not get into it guys, it's not necessary at this point. But if someone is going to take shots then I am going to defend my stance, so hopefully if you do so you will understand that I don't want to talk about this topic but if put in the position I will.

Backer you of all people, who call out my negative posts toward Carter or other players in the past are going to come on here and call someone out who has not been on the team for 3 years now? Get real, are you telling me that he couldn't have played the PG spot for the Sycamroes last night? Ok, that answers my question - no need to even answer it because you and I both know the answer to it. He got caught up in a new system and he didn't fit it very well, had nothing to do with not being good enough. This program has been below .500 since he left, trust me he was good enough to play for a below .500 mid major. I am positive of that.

Bent, he is still at Indiana State finishing up school - last semester I think. Some people on this forum are pretty good friends with him actually (not me personally). He and his girlfriend are good friends with a lot of the people on the track and cross country team. I would say that she is the main reason he did not play college hoops elsewhere and he also liked Indiana State. My guess is it offered the best of both worlds for him, good school away from home - yet very close to him. I don't think it was ever about proving anyone wrong for him, he got a raw deal. He truly wanted to be a Sycamore.

Cole's a great guy....remember most freshmen or new players in any system's first response is to look for their own shot...I think Cole's grown a bit actually lol...but in all seriousness Cole's a good guy, great shooter, and may have very well turned into the curent point guard of this team...just saying....

I have NOTHING against Cole and I have NOTHING against a coach cutting a player. I was just stating a fact.
Coaching our team is a JOB for Coach. If he has to make hard decisions to keep his job, so be it. A scholarship must be EARNED.

AC has nothing to do with it. I called you out on him simply because you were wrong.

Wrong in the sense that I said he was un athletic or wrong in the sense that I said he wouldn't play more than 12 minutes a game? I think that was the discussion that we were having, is that not correct?

I have been very open and honest saying I was not high on AC as a player (has nothing to do with his effort) and I have also been very open and honest about being "wrong" about him. He has had a great year, no doubt. But let's both be honest, if Kelly, Marshall, Lathan don't all get hurt then he does NOT play these kinds of minutes - that was quite obvious to start the season and you even acknowledged that at the time. So let's be clear what I was "wrong" about.

You were stating facts that coaching is a job, agreed I was just stating facts that playing PG is a JOB that Holmstrom could have done just fine for a team that was below .500 the 3 years since he left the program. If anyone disagrees with that then I guess we can go down this road once again, I don't really see the point in it. But I guess it's whatever, this is a message board and if you all want to make it happen then let's do it. lol

Why is everyone piling on Morgan....he didn't do anything except for give his honest opinion in a non topsy turvy talk your way in circles manner...I personally think and have said that AC would be good for us but....I also said Brant was improving a little...Come on people.....

I'm not sure how it came across, but I don't want to "call you out" regarding AC. We all know what he is doing when given the opportunity. As far as Cole, I see no way he would have ever played PG for us. That's just my opinion and I know you and others may disagree. I don't think he has any of the skills that our PG's of the last few years have had. I liked him. I saw him in HS and he was deep threat, but he lost his shot when he came to State and he could not play for us.
In my opinion.

Thanks Greenwell... Sycamorebacker and I have been around here for some time now and he and I don't always see eye to eye but we are able to reach a common ground on most things. I don't want to get into with him or anyone else about this. I guess all I am saying is that if anyone wants to come on here and say that the right decision was made and or he wasn't good enough to play for Indiana State I am prepared to make an argument in opposition to that. That's just who I am.

Backer, would you agree or disagree that Cole was being asked to do to much as a freshman and even as a sophomore? Could that be a reason for his shooting woes? Along with his size, but that wasn't the whole story... I mean if we want to compare the two (we have before) AC didn't shoot that high of % his first 2 seasons as a Sycamore, true?

But it's all good... For what it's worth though, I don't see us getting a kid out of Bloomington South anytime soon that's for sure. Is it a direct relation to this very incident we are discussing? Probably has a lot to do with it. They are not going to go over their and recruit a kid right now...
