if Coach Miles had other Head Coaching offers before he took our job?

He was an ass't for 21 years before he became our head coach...
per NSF:

"he just signed a 5 year extension and told all of this season's Freshmen recruits he'd be here through the contract".

I totally feel like Trent is being straightforward with his freshman players if in fact, that quote is correct. Frankly NSF is closer to the team that we are and he would not have mentioned it had it not been said. Now if Trent honors that committment remains to be seen but my guess is that he means it. Do not underestmate the power of having his family in Terre Haute and the fact that he is an alumnus of Indiana State and a former player. Yes, it would seem likely that he will move on at some point but he's got a great gig in TH and as I often say, it is better to be a big fish in a small pond.

The same goes for Ron Prettyman, Greg Lansing and we might as well add Dr. Bradley in the mix as well. The is a ton of positive karma going on around town and I am sure that all of these individuals are very satisfied to see all of this happening.

I suppose that most of you heard the announcement that ISU staff members are getting a long-overdue 3% raise and enter even MORE good karma. Nothing spells success more than CASH in the pocket. I can't wait to get to campus this weekend and get a taste of that karma (I think they call it Coors Light at the Bally). Let's hope that NONE of these people jump ship in the near future. My guess is that most of them will hang around for awhile and take it all in.

Not to mention that Miles and Lansing have been assistants at the bigger programs. They know how quickly that can fade away and hopefully they banked a little money while they were there. Besides, you can easily make a living and retire well on what ISU pays.

Great point, bent. Iowa was far from a dream job for Greg and he makes no bones about it. Trent has seen Coach Willingham go thru some tough times too~

Yes, I know, read the same thing.

My point is MAYBE INDIANA STATE is where he WANTS to be.

i.e. If he'd had OTHER offers in the PAST, he could have taken THEM if his goal was to just be a head coach.

I think Coach Miles will be in Terre Haute for quite some time.

this article should be sent to every living alumni of ISU, does anyone know if the school is planning to do something like that? The more who see and know what progress is being made, the better.

I totally agree. I'd also like to see it mentioned in the Trib-Star. I linked it to the Indy Star sports facebook page. Anyone send it to Indy sports writers/reporters?

hey this is music to my ears....his father left a legacy here as well...I guess I was just preparing myself for horrible news that he would leave....

Here's an email I sent to Jim Lefko at the Indy Star this morning:

Jim,

Sorry to be a bother, but I wanted you to see this. The Star had no problem doing a story on our football team when we were the worst in the country. Neither did the gentleman who wrote the story I’ve linked to. He followed up his story from two years ago with this. America loves an underdog, and ISU’s football program was certainly an underdog. They’ve gotten past that now, and are a true feel-good story, and as the headline states, “What college football is supposed to be.”

This is on a national sports website. Perhaps sometime this fall, the Star could do a “how they did it” story on ISU football. The story on Shakir Bell was nice and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But there’s a bigger story here, about an Indiana school and a coach with a vision, and the perseverance to see that vision through to fruition. It’s a great story that I think your readers would enjoy. More, perhaps than the latest IU recruiting violation…

Here’s the link: http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefoo...-from-worst-program-to-one-of-the-best-100711

Anyway, thanks for your time. I appreciate it.

I'll let you know if I receive a response.

The comment about other ISu football coaches not getting offers to move up.....

NOT TRUE....Coach Raetz was offered the Oregon State job and turned it down after promises made to him by Dr. Landini to further upgrade the Indiana State football program.

Raetz was also interviewed for the head coaching job at Louisville. And he was offered the defensive coordinator's job at Indiana twice, once by Bill Mallory and once by Cam Cameron.

Just wanted to set the record straight.

Thanks but the point remains that they STAYED. If Raetz WANTED to leave, he'd had left.

Was the issue with Landini a 'bait & switch?' Or were the resources simply not available?

Hate to say it, because I liked Dr. Landini....

But he made promises that he didn't keep in regards to the football program.

Didn't he do the same thing to keep Bob Warn from leaving to coach at Illinois? I remember having to run over to the baseball office when I was a student worker, and the architect's model of the new baseball stadium he was promised was in there...we all know how well that plan worked out...

Agree that weren't kept.

But my question is why; COULD NOT or WOULD NOT.

Despite what many may think, there's a world of difference between COULD and WOULD.

COULD = Can or Can Not

WOULD = WILL but WILL NOT

When you are in a leadership position you should know what you can or can not do and not make promises that are based on hope.

My take on this is that before Ron Prettyman, and stretching all the way back to the early 80's, there was a definite mindset among most at ISU that "...we can't afford that..." without trying to go find the $$$ to do something. So the COULD not followed the WOULD not, since it was always easier to say, "We don't have the money," than to go out and find the money. Ron has broken that mindset.

And in this speculation, I'm talking about administrators, not coaches...

Not disagreeing; that still doesn't answer the question.

It takes many things to grow a college, visison, resources (more than financial), the will to want to grow.

ITF hit it on the nose; set a goal and reach it.
