Indiana State: From worst college football program to one of the best

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

Here's an email I sent to Jim Lefko at the Indy Star this morning:

Jim,

Sorry to be a bother, but I wanted you to see this. The Star had no problem doing a story on our football team when we were the worst in the country. Neither did the gentleman who wrote the story I’ve linked to. He followed up his story from two years ago with this. America loves an underdog, and ISU’s football program was certainly an underdog. They’ve gotten past that now, and are a true feel-good story, and as the headline states, “What college football is supposed to be.”

This is on a national sports website. Perhaps sometime this fall, the Star could do a “how they did it” story on ISU football. The story on Shakir Bell was nice and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But there’s a bigger story here, about an Indiana school and a coach with a vision, and the perseverance to see that vision through to fruition. It’s a great story that I think your readers would enjoy. More, perhaps than the latest IU recruiting violation…

Anyway, thanks for your time. I appreciate it.

I'll let you know if I receive a response.

Just thought I'd update everyone: Still waiting...surprise, surprise, surprise...

Agree that weren't kept.

But my question is why; COULD NOT or WOULD NOT.

Despite what many may think, there's a world of difference between COULD and WOULD.

COULD = Can or Can Not

WOULD = WILL but WILL NOT

I think honestly, it was would not, but that is more complicated that simply stating it that way. I think it is would not, because the administrations in the 80s and especially 90s thought that they could not go to alumni for support because quote, "all of our alumni are teachers and don't have much money." and "our alumni won't give back." They relied almost exclusively on funds from the state. History shows that and shows that the March On! campaign is our first capital campaign ever??? And that explains the WOULD NOT because they beleived they COULD NOT....

Interesting as Landini stated HIS position (in his memoirs) that he BELIEVED there was money in the alumni base; his predecessors never ASKED for the money. Landini isn't here to defend his positions.

Agree that State has NEVER been good about cultivating alumni for donations.
AND they've waited TOO long for have a capital campaign; imagine what they might have raised during the Booming '90s economy?!

Let's don't forget the primary factor that undermines fundraising - WINNING.
The 90's ISU sports squads weren't too encouraging to alumni pocketbook excavations, were they?

Last year's post-season MVC hoop championship and the clear resurrection of Sycamore Football has bred loose pockets among our ISU brethren.:sycamores:

In a nutshell, confidence in ISU leadership is the highest in decades!

your posts weren't deleted, they're still in the ISU vs. WIU gameday thread, right there on pages 1 & 2. No reason to delete those 2 posts, they were just your point of view.
