in talking with several former isu football coaches.....
in recent weeks, they emphasized to me that rebuilding a collegiate program today is not like rebuilding a program in the 1980s and 1990s.....with new ncaa regulations on scholarship limits/recruiting (that weren't in place in the 80s and 90s) and the time that coaches are able to spend with their players (the ncaa now limits how much time that players and coaches can work together during the season and in the offseason)......it just makes things that much tougher.....not that it can't be done...it can.....but it's just not as easy to make that quick turnaround as it was in years past.....so what might have taken 2-3 years in the past may now take 4-5......needless to say, and i think that the isu coaching staff would agree, the sycamores are still very definitely a work in progress right now....and will be for a little while longer.....
patience is the key word here....i know patience isn't usually preached on websites like this....lol.....but in this case, that's what isu fans need to remember....patience.....the road will be bumpy for a little while longer...but miles and his coaching staff are getting better players, better athletes and, more importantly, better people, character-wise....than was in here during the Lou West debacle.....
and some words on Coach West's time at Indiana State......from all that I have heard, he was/is a nice guy...meant well.....but was just in over his head.....
most of the players didn't respect him.....his recruiting philosophy was ill-planned.....he reportedly turned down some really good kids/players who had wanted to come to indiana state.....several of whom were the sons of former isu players (one in particular -- the son of former ISU offensive tackle Bob Koehne -- is now starting on the offensive line at Western Illinois after being told that he wasn't good enough to play in the MVC)...
i have heard several other horror stories from various former isu players who were tuned out when it came to having players they recommended recruited....
and that's what i mean when i say that the recruiting pipelines to major high school powers in the state has always been open.....many of the coaches at those schools have close ties to indiana state through family, friends, etc.....and they want to see isu do well.....but when they recommend someone to the coaching staff and are ignored on a somewhat regular basis, does anybody think that they're going to keep helping isu? no way man....
and that is where trent and his coaching staff are continuing to do a good job...his first recruiting season was spent trying to mend fences with high school coaches around the state....talking to people and letting them know that their opinion was needed and wanted and respected....
and to isu's credit...those high school coaches, for the most part, have welcomed trent and his coaching staff with open arms....no major grudges were being held against the school....they were just glad that a change had been made at the top....and that, to coin an old movie phrase, a new sheriff was in town and things were going to change for the better...lol.....
