I dont know if it's true but I have heard that if Coach Trent Miles can't turn around the Sycamores football program in about 4 years, that they would take away the ISU Football program. Is that true or is that just a rumor?

as of right now...not true....

the president of the university and the athletic director have both proclaimed their interest in rebuilding the football program in order to make it competitive in the missouri valley and among other national i-aa programs. they know that it will take 4-5 years in order to do that.

I have heard this (several months) ago from a pretty decent inside source. I heard their was a 4 year time table as well...

I find it hard to believe they would be pooring money into the program if they dont plan on keeping it - or they are convinced that it will succeed!

Guess they could be thinking that if they give it a 110% effort with a good coach and it doesn't turn around... Maybe its time to throw in the towel.

I fully expect the new conviction to work wonders though.

Would State shutter it or change...

I understand the timeline; just as I understand the committment

IF (big IF) the decision is made to reduce the committment, would State dis-band or change to non-scholarship a la Butler, Drake, Valpo...

Would they move/join the Pioneer Football League (http://www.pioneer-football.org/)
Some easy commutes; Butler, Drake, Valpo, Dayton, Morehead St...

Let's all hope Coach Miles resurrects the program and builds something for long-term success

That's what many fans are saying, so I assume the rumor has just looped and originated with fans themselves.

isu would not join the pioneer conference.....

most of those schools have stated that they would not play indiana state due to the larger size of the school and the better facilities.

I would "guess" that if Coach Miles can't get it done during his tenure it could be dumped. However, I fully expect that he will get it going & I don't think four years is a definite timetable unless we were to go winless all four years. Then I would probably side with dumping it too.

here we are entering year two of a long rebuilding effort.....

and already the birds are circling....lol.....listen folks.....i tell you once again....for like the 100th time....its gonna take 4-5 years to get the program back on an even keel where it would be able to play all the other mvc schools on equal footing.....the roster isnt full yet...not back to the numbers that it needs to be....it's getting there...but it takes several recruiting classes in order to do that.....you have to develop depth at key positions, like the offensive and defensive lines...not at that point either.....you have to be able to redshirt most of your first-year freshmen so that you have fifth-year seniors...who are more developed physically and mentally...again, isu isn't at that point as of yet....it's going to take time folks.....so just relax.....take your fingers off the eject buttons....lol...and try giving trent and his coaching staff some room and time to work.....okay??????????

Well said! Point well taken, again. We didn't get this way over night; it's not gonna get fixed overnight. This year will be better than last, and last was better than the year before.

I think everyone needs to realize that this is going to be another bumpy season. There were some positives toward the end of last season that can be carried into this year. From all appearences, most of the team stayed down this summer, which will help. But like Tom said, the roster is still pretty thin, and definitely still very young. Hopefully 2-3 wins this season, then 4-5 the next. After that is when they can really start competing, assuming the core stays intact and they continue to get good recruiting classes. I like the coaching staff they've put together and the investment they are making--it will pay off!

While the program isn't winning now, if they closed down the football program, odds are they'd never get it back. Additionally, it would do some damage to the University. From a University standpoint, the football team is a selling and marketing point regardless of how good they are. I honestly would have never gone to a school without a football or basketball team.

Agreed. However, I think they can win 2 or 3 games and continue to lay the foundation. Miles is getting some athletes in place, he just needs to continue to place major importance on recruiting. Hopefully the University opens the wallet when it comes to the recruiting budget.

in talking with several former isu football coaches.....

in recent weeks, they emphasized to me that rebuilding a collegiate program today is not like rebuilding a program in the 1980s and 1990s.....with new ncaa regulations on scholarship limits/recruiting (that weren't in place in the 80s and 90s) and the time that coaches are able to spend with their players (the ncaa now limits how much time that players and coaches can work together during the season and in the offseason)......it just makes things that much tougher.....not that it can't be done...it can.....but it's just not as easy to make that quick turnaround as it was in years past.....so what might have taken 2-3 years in the past may now take 4-5......needless to say, and i think that the isu coaching staff would agree, the sycamores are still very definitely a work in progress right now....and will be for a little while longer.....

patience is the key word here....i know patience isn't usually preached on websites like this....lol.....but in this case, that's what isu fans need to remember....patience.....the road will be bumpy for a little while longer...but miles and his coaching staff are getting better players, better athletes and, more importantly, better people, character-wise....than was in here during the Lou West debacle.....

and some words on Coach West's time at Indiana State......from all that I have heard, he was/is a nice guy...meant well.....but was just in over his head.....

most of the players didn't respect him.....his recruiting philosophy was ill-planned.....he reportedly turned down some really good kids/players who had wanted to come to indiana state.....several of whom were the sons of former isu players (one in particular -- the son of former ISU offensive tackle Bob Koehne -- is now starting on the offensive line at Western Illinois after being told that he wasn't good enough to play in the MVC)...

i have heard several other horror stories from various former isu players who were tuned out when it came to having players they recommended recruited....

and that's what i mean when i say that the recruiting pipelines to major high school powers in the state has always been open.....many of the coaches at those schools have close ties to indiana state through family, friends, etc.....and they want to see isu do well.....but when they recommend someone to the coaching staff and are ignored on a somewhat regular basis, does anybody think that they're going to keep helping isu? no way man....

and that is where trent and his coaching staff are continuing to do a good job...his first recruiting season was spent trying to mend fences with high school coaches around the state....talking to people and letting them know that their opinion was needed and wanted and respected....

and to isu's credit...those high school coaches, for the most part, have welcomed trent and his coaching staff with open arms....no major grudges were being held against the school....they were just glad that a change had been made at the top....and that, to coin an old movie phrase, a new sheriff was in town and things were going to change for the better...lol.....

I think everyone would be disappointed if they dropped the program. I think Terre Haute and ISU are behind a football team that is one the rise. If ISU is trying to gain enrollment I don't see them dropping football anytime soon seeing how their are give/take 100 football players. The marching band, the athletic trainers. And all of those kids recruit ISU by just going to school and telling their friends about the school. And like many of the posters have said before "why poor money in something that is going to waste within 5-10 years?!"
