well, that'll prob. do it, ISU goes for it on 4th down at the EIU 14, but can't convert.

Positives:
EIU had to punt
ISU scored
EIU scored less than 60 points
ISU's defense held EIU to less than 600 yards of offense
fewer penalties for ISU
tackling sounded better according to the announcers

Misfortunes:
turnovers hurt ISU
missed opportunities on good drives for ISU wiped out chances for TD's.
Gave up alot of big plays to EIU.

anything else to add from anyone who was at the game?

so now it's off to another I-A money game at Northern Illinois next weekend. I'm guessing it won't be pretty.

We lost 38-3 but I thought we looked much better believe it or not. The defense looked halfway decent at times. We were able to run the ball well at times but a couple of our drives stalled out. Dowdell is a good runner, but he just really struggles at throwing the ball. I still think he should go to WR and just let Schmitdke learn on the fly. We could put a few plays in each game for Dowdell at QB.

I wasn't at the game, but it was on WEIU.

I guess that's better, but it's sure hard to get excited about a FG and two forced punts. No team should have to rebuild from as close to the bottom of the barrel as we have, but it is what it is.

We are like a new program just being started. We have like 61 Fr. and RFr. The stats on this game show that it should be pretty even but we lost TO battle and field position. I'm usually a glass half empty guy when it comes to ISU athletics, but I am encouraged a little bit. I just keep thinking that we are boys against men out there. Give Miles a couple more years of recruiting and a couple more years in the weight room and let's see what we got then.

Just got home from the game.

We looked 10 times better than we did two weeks ago.

Look at the stats. We had 1 more rushing yard than them. 176 - 175. We had 252 offensive yards to their 282. Only 282 yards for EIU? Ladies and Gentlemen, that is pretty good defense.

The defense made two great holds early in the game. We only gave up 1 "big" play. I was very impressed with the improvements on the defensive side of the ball.

"But we gave up 38 points". Think about this.......... At one point in time we had given up more points than yards. 10 points, 7 yards. 17 of their points were scored on 20 yards of offense. The defense was responsible for 21 points. Two of those touchdowns were scored after we were already out of the game.

The offense was able to move the ball well at times. However, we were unable to capitalize. We had two or three legitimate chances to score, but we managed only a FG.

I want to recognize Freshman Brock Lough. Brock ran the ball very hard and very well.

All in All, we made some pretty good strides. The score does not tell the whole story.
STAY POSITIVE!

You know what would help with fan interest and attendance at games? If the Tribstar and Gosycamores would tell us in their pre-game stories WHAT TIME IT STARTS!!!!!!!!!!

I had to look at the Eastern Illinois story to find out it's 6 p.m.

The Tribune-Star had the time in the paper. They put it in a graphic accompanying the story. They have for years.

Anyway, by Miles' post-game comments, there seemed to be optimism.

You know, I was looking at the stats and drive chart on espn.com, and it really seemed as though we were able to move the ball. They really didn't stop us that much, other than our own mistakes (fumbles, int's). Not to say that the better team lost, we all know that's not true. We did, though, show that we're not quite the "high school team playing USC" that we've been in the past few years.

I've suddenly become a big proponent of letting Schmidtke have the reins at QB, and taking our lumps. This kid is obviously the future at QB, and if we're rebuilding anyway, let him get the experience. That mentality certainly seems to have paid dividends for Jimmy Clausen at ND.

The team is getting better. We got the improvement we wanted, so next week, let's keep that going!!!! We might get good enough to beat someone before the season is over!!!

Indy, I was thinking the EXACT same thing when Calvin was in last night. I know we're not the coaches, but I really hope they go this route now. Dowdell would be a great receiver or running back of sorts.

QB Controversy

Its funny how the different people can watch the same thing and view things differently. I thought the team moved the ball much better when Dowdell was in the game. I have always and still am a Schimdke fan but Dowdell's experience and fleet of foot makes him a more viable option right now. His ability to run is a huge asset. Regardless I do not like the idea of shuffling these two around. Make a decision and stick with it! Whichever QB they get behind can do the job. I do not like this shuffling game. It can't build confidence for either player. I would love to see just one QB next week and hopefully it is Dowdell. Yeah he turned the ball over several times but what roles did the WR have in the pic and the Center on the bad snaps. Dowdell is a great athlete, utilize his talent.

What about putting both of them in the backfield? Think of the things you could do with that.

I really liked the way we moved the ball when Calvin was in there. He actually runs really well. The turnovers cannot happen. Trade the turnovers for a score or two and the score would have been 28 - 17.

Turnovers CANNOT happen.

Syd, maybe we'll see some experimentation at Northern Illinois this week? I mean, why not? ISU really has no shot to win, so why not use this I-A game and try some new things? Unless they'd rather wait and surprise SEMO in a couple weeks. Man, I hope they win the SEMO game or it could possibly be another 0-fer season.

That, and come home from DeKalb with no more injuries.
