I would have never thought ISU, Terre Haute, or the Wabash Valley would support this team like it has, but it's GREAT. A program that was potentially doomed about five years ago due to the tragic Lou West hiring and other ineptness has become a first-class operation. The tailgating is great, the games are great................. Saturdays are great.

I love my school and this team!

Is it Saturday again yet?

There are still a bunch of students staying out in the lot instead of coming into the stadium. Put down the beer and get your ass inside!

I'd like to see them come into the game also Jason - but I have to tell you, if I had a choice between them:

A. Not coming to the game at all
B. Tailgating but not coming into the game

I would take option B. Obviously option C which would be tailgating and coming into the game would be fantastic! I think the key thing to focus on in that we are making HUGE gains in student involvement. It's a momentum that I hope we can continue to capitalize on. Tailgating at Indiana State will never be like what you would see at IU or Purdue - however I think that fans bring that pre game atmosphere into the stadium and are really pumped up come kick-off time. I would agree that Indiana State Football has become an event. Keeping playing good football and the event will continue to grow!

I should however add that I do not buy into the idea that attendance might increase once we start playing conference games. People in Terre Haute couldn't care less about D1 AA opponents. I would venture to guess if you surveyed fans less than 10% home fans are coming to games because of the opponent. The average Indiana State football fan doesn't know diddly shit about the MVFC.

How many of these student fans would scurry into MS if there was a sweep of the tailgating area a few minutes before kickoff? I wouldn't expect numbers of arrests to rival IU. In fact I would hope there were none. But I can't help but wonder???

Sorry SP - I am not in support of this at all.

when I went to the ISU game up here in SD last year they actually CLOSED the tailgating area and force everyone into the game or to leave. I believe it's patrolled too.

Once again, I am very much against this! We want people to come out to the games yes? Getting them in the parking lot is half the battle. If they come tailgate its possible they will come in the games. Some of those people will not even bother if they are going to be told to leave. If you guys have learned anything about Sycamore attenadance its that you can only control what you can control. That being said, all I can control is myself and I go to all the games I can and I am glad for anyone who even shows up at Memorial stadium. Remember where we came from fellas - keep winning games and people will come into the games.

not a fan of this at all. whats the point of giving a kid a minor or public intox and maybe ruining a future job just because you want him to go watch a football game. while i would love to see everyone inside the stadium during the game, it's just not going to happen. every school in the country has people that just tailgate all day, and that is fine. i've been loving the atmosphere outside of memorial stadium before the games and it will continue to grow because students will see that it is a fun and safe thing to do with their friends on a saturday afternoon. as long as the people that want to see the game are inside the stadium and the people that want to tailgate are having good safe fun, it's fine by me. now if we have 4,000 people in the stadium and 6,000 people tailgating, then we will have a problem.

He/she is just as likely to get a PI outside as he is in. As we keep getting bigger crowds, the University will be forced to have more officers on site. Further, let's not make excuses for the students. Drinking IS A PROBLEM at Indiana State right now. I put away my fair share of beer when I was at State (and then some) but I knew when to put it down and get stuff done. Today's generation has problems doing it.

That said, I'm with SSOM that it is great having them out there. Now they must make the next step and get into the game.

Interesting topic here. This weekend will tell me more, but I think at least a percentage of the people do know who the opponent is. I heard many neutral people last week say "Yeah, but they only beat Quincy" and "Yeah, but Drake doesn't even give scholarships" when talking about ISU football. This weekend, there are no "Yeah, buts" -- this is a good team we are playing and we have to be ready. Hopefully Shakir's big day will inspire even more people to come to the game.

I agree that we are going to be playing our best team to date this weekend. But let's be honest Joey - your talking to "football educated" people. All of the fans that come to ISU football games don't fall into that category. This is and always will be a basketball state and town. I think you have an awful lot of people in Terre Haute who will support Indiana State but they will tell you that they are bigger IU, Purdue and Notre Dame football fans than they are Indiana State football fans. Some of those same people support Indiana State basketball more exclusively.

I think that drinking is a problem at Indiana State and a major problem for 16 to 24 year old kids nation wide. It is something that is very much out of control and if you disagree with me you should just walk through the tailgating area at an Indiana State Football game, much of the tailgating that is going on - especially those still tailgating during the game is kids in that age range. Now I don't believe you probably have many 16 or 17 year old kids out drinking at Indiana State tailgating, so don't get me wrong. But the underage drinking is going on and I believe that it should be Policed. At least bring in excise police for a few games and have them walk around and monitor and in same cases ID kids to make sure that it's not going on or doesn't get out of control! I agree with Jason that it is a big problem at Indiana State, but I refuse to believe that the problem is any bigger in Terre Haute than any other city or university in the United States.

i'm not trying to spark an argument here or anything. but how many people were at the tailgates and were disturbed, offended, etc. by a college aged kid that appeared to be drinking? just a legitimate question.

This year none.

Last year, quite a few times. In fact, I had to apologize on behalf of my fraternity's undergrads because they were acting ridiculous.

Other than their "music" being up way too loud, the ones around our tailgating area have behaved well and not been a problem at all. (Wow, that sounded like it came from somebody's grampa.)

I've seen too much of this attempt of manufacturing a "criminal" mentality by over-zealous police depts. in the past couple decades, trumping up minor charges to pad their resumes while virtually destroying career opportunities by otherwise "normal" tweeners. In many respects, we need a RETURN of the "Andy of Mayberry" approach to problem solving...we can't incarcerate the WHOLE country for minor bullshit nuances.

Sometimes we need to take a step back and COMPARE life...then v. now.

For some of the OFCers, think back to YOUR dayz @ Memorial Stadium...and the frequent smell of a spilled cup of Boone's Farm or Seagram's flowing down the concrete steps. It's LIFE...
