OJDXVBYSHEXUPSL.20121102012050.jpg

Indiana State continues year three of the Greg Lansing era on Wednesday, January 2 when the Sycamores (8-4, 1-0 MVC) play their first road game in MVC play at Northern Iowa (7-6, 0-1 MVC) inside the McLeod Center. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. (ET). The game will be broadcast live nationally on ESPN3 as a simulcast of the Panther Sports Network, which is the official local television provider for Northern Iowa with Brad Wells (pbp) and Kevin Lehman (analyst) on the call. The game can also be heard on the radio via WIBQ 98.5 FM and along the Nelligan Sports Marketing Radio Network with Brian Fritz (pbp) and Matt Renn (analyst) on the call. GoSycamores.com will have an audio only production of the radio broadcast as well.

So,......the question here is,.......is Northern Iowa a team that will struggle in the Valley based on what we saw in Wichita yesterday? Or is this a team that will come out Wednesday very angry and motivated to prove yesterday was a fluke.

Personally, i think the answer is somewhere in the middle. I dont think they are as bad as they looked last night against Wichita State, but they do have some flaws. One that stuck out to me was a complete lack of quickness. They looked a step slow all night and WSU looked soooooooo much quicker on offense and defense. UNI doesnt look very athletic and I think this would be a good game to use our depth and athleticism and run a little.

I agree. We are more athletic than UNI. On the road, usually your bench doesn't play very well in college basketball. So I think for us to win we need all our startes to play well for sure. But Ill be happy if our bench does play well. I think in this game Gant will see double teams. So that means we are gonna have to knock down some key shots. I look for JO to control this game. The 1 thing I think we need to work is our screens. We dont set hard screens bc our bigs usually either slip or pop out. At times we have done a lil pick and roll action and it has been successful bc teams play JO and not the screener most of the time. Ha if a team had JO could you blame em? He makes big plays and everybody else better. Kinda like a Rajon Rondo.

Totally agree with the slow and less athletic comments. They were, i felt, embarrassed last night. They will give us the best they have because they are D 1 athletes and have pride in their game. This year, their best will not be good enough. Trees win an other close game.

I went to ESPN3 and looked at Wed Schedule and it doesnt show our game, am I missing something? I thought Wed and Sat game are ESPN3?

We might be the better team right now but UNI is never easy especially at home. We'll have to play our best to get a win there.

??????????????????? a wounded Panther licking its wounds or one fighting to survive and protecting its lair ?????????????????? We need to show up with maximum intensity and set the pace to win this one.

My favorite comment from that board, in reference to Odum...

"How is he only a Junior seems like he has been around forever."

Our opponets LOVE Odum...they even noticed he shaved his beard. Some of the "bleached" Redturds were saying he looked like a "meth addict"...

Interesting comments from the UNI Board:

"We need a point guard that is strong w/ the ball that is less interested in hitting threes/scoring & more in terms of playing great perimeter defense & running the offense. We must take care of the ball on offense. Way too many unforced errors this season.

"Tuttle was a complete non-factor against both teams with the size they provided. I mean it was difficult for us to simply dribble and pass the basketball against these teams as a result of their physicality and athleticism."

"...the fact that UNI still has zero inside play besides Tuttle is very troubling."

"Turnovers galore, can't rebound, horrible decision making, no post presence whatsoever against teams with size"

"Koch is plenty big, but he simply does not like being down low in the trees on the offensive end. Argue it any way you want, he would rather play outside the lane given a choice. Tuttle is good, could be great, but still awful thin. Creighton's Ecchincie (sp) would muscle him around."

Much riff raff re: increasing the coaching salary to $1m/yr (LOL) and recruiting overseas...sounds like a few unhappy campers in the cornfields of Iowa.

Hope ISU keeps in mind that they've played a good schedule so far...records can be deceiving.

This is pretty great, it's from the UNI message board:

This is a random questions, but this match-up happened to make me think of it:
If you had to rank the other 9 MVC fan bases in terms of how you feel about them, what would they look like?

Here are mine:
1. Indiana State - have met some very classy and knowledgeable Tree fans in STL. Never had a bad experience
2. Missouri State - same as Indiana State fans
3. Evansville - have never personally met one... do they exist???
4. Bradley - some arrogant fans, but every fan base has some. Haven't met a lot of Bradley fans...
5. Illinois State - stayed in the team hotel last year in STL, met some arrogant fans, but nothing too terrible
6. Southern Illinois - haven't been as bad recently now that their program is in the tank
7. Wichita State - may be the most passionate fans in the MVC, but arrogant
8. Drake - their complete lack of basketball knowledge is unbelievable
9. Creighton - arrogant and annoying, hands down my most hated fan base in the MVC

Updated: Indiana State (8-4) Takes On Northern Iowa (7-6)

Expect a hard-fought game at McLeod Center on Wednesday as Indiana State visits Northern Iowa in a Missouri Valley action. Tip-off is at 8:00 EST and it will be shown on PSN, ESPN3.com.
This game could set the tone for the entire Indiana State Missouri Valley tour. Plus, Northern Iowa is an RPI Top 100 team, ranked No. 93, and Indiana State will look to maintain its 3-3 record against Top 100 teams. The Sycamores are 8-4 overall as well as 1-0 in the Missouri Valley. Meanwhile, the Panthers have a record of 7-6, including 0-1 in the conference. Last season, the Sycamores went 1-1 against the Panthers. Over the last four seasons, Indiana State is 4-5 against Northern Iowa, including 2-2 at McLeod Center. StatSmack! Indiana State is better than Northern Iowa

  • Lucas Eitel is ranked 9th in the Missouri Valley in three-pointers.
  • The Indiana State assist leader (Jake Odum) has more assists than the Northern Iowa assist leader (Deon Mitchell).
  • Indiana State beat Northern Iowa by 5 points the last time they played (Jan 25, 2012).
  • Indiana State is better at defending the three (31.1% allowed vs 35.1% allowed) than Northern Iowa this season.

MVC road games are never a given, no matter the opponent. However, we do have an opportunity to take advantage of a team that's struggling. Northern Iowa has plenty of talent and could turn the corner at any moment, but we have a chance to take down a top-half MVC team on the road. I don't see us winning at Creighton or WSU, so getting a quality win against UNI on the road early in the conference season will be huge.

Should be another close game.

Vegas has UNI a favorite anywhere from 5.5 to 7 points ????????
