I have received information that an announcement regarding Jake Kelly's eligibility will be made public in the next 2 weeks or so. That means by Friday the 18th I expect we will have already heard some very positive news!

I understand Jake had to re-submit some paper work and that caused a delay... I think this had already been reported in the past.I was told by some folks at a golf outing a couple weeks ago that this was the case. But I am hearing positive things, the folks at State seem to think the kid is going to be cleared to play and this would be GREAT news for the Sycamores!

Ruling on Kelly case expected in September
By Pat Harty • Iowa City Press-Citizen • August 31, 2009

A ruling on whether former Iowa basketball player Jake Kelly can play this season for Indiana State is expected in about two weeks.

“It looks like it’s going to be about mid-September,” Ace Hunt of the Indiana State sports information department said Monday afternoon. “We had some paper work that had to be re-submitted, so it’s taken a little longer than we expected.”

Hunt said Indiana State officials are confident that the NCAA will grant Kelly a waiver that will allow him to play this coming season.

Morgan,

I won't believe anything you say about Jake Kelly........ You have never been right on anything about this kid in the past. Haha!

How about a 6'6" Menser with a little less of a jump shot. Long arms on D like Nate Green. Very good passer and ballhandler like Odum.

Anybody else with opinions?

I think that's pretty accurate - I mean he is a 5 tool player. He can shoot, pass, dribble, defend and rebound... He will have a couple triple doubles this season... We have not had a player with the ability to put up a triple double in a very long time..

Another comment

I have not seen Jake Kelly play since HS at Marshall. I imagine he has bulked up a little bit. I thought he was outstanding at Marshall and was very disappointed ISU did not get him the first time around.

That said:

Nate Green was MVC Defensive POY and his Sr. Year Valley POY. He was capable of defending guys from 5'10' to 6'8". I am not sure that Jake is that strong on the defensive end.

Nate Green was an outstanding rebounder/leaper. I don't think Jake has quite that much hop in his step.

Nate was great on the drive to the hoop and distribution. I pray Kelly is his equal and I think the potential and evidence is there that he is that good.

If Jake Kelly is 90% of the player that Nate Green was for the ISU Sycamores, he will be VERY GOOD indeed. If better, then it will be lights outs.

I think everything you said is very fair, however I would suggest that Kelly is a lights out scorer, he can score and handle the ball better than Nate Green could. If this kids game continues to develop he will have a chance to get drafted as a 6'6 guard with range...

One thing Kelly really improved on under LIckliter at Iowa was his defense. He moves laterally very quickly and has long arms. Todd Lickliter said in a post-game interview that he was as good a defensive player as he's ever coached. His jumping ability is very good. I still say even the optimists are going to be surprised.

I hope Kelly is a better big game performer than Green. He always seemed to go AWOL in the big games..

:naughty:Don't forget, he single-handedly saved us from an embarrassing loss at home against EIU after we won the IU classic (at which he was MVP). He scored over 50 points and took the game over in the come from behind win against EIU.

I think he hit the game winning shot against Bradley at home to win the MVC regular season title as well.

Two games are not "Birdesque"...

I'm not sayin' that he wasn't a good player. He did score that 45 points against EIU, but he didn't score the winning bucket against Bradley. That honor would go to Keyln Block. Green also went AWOL in the Valley tournament, and in the NCAA's against Texas. He was a very good player that was surrounded by more talent than a guy like David Moss. Obviously, he was a good one.

I just hope Kelly doesn't disappear in the BIG games...

Though I do think he will a great addition and he is a great player from what I have seen and some Carmel coaches I have talked with about him, saying he is Bird-like is most certainly a stretch...I think he would make a tremendous impact, he will score, but he just isn't Bird. From what I have seen and stats, he isn't a "great' rebounder, he isn't a "great passer (for assists)...Bird did these things and did them very, very well. Possibly better than almost any other player in history. Bird involved the entire team at all times, whereas Kelley appears to be more of an isolation player, working to get his shots...I could be completely wrong as I did not see any Iowa games, but saw him play in one game in HS.

I have nothing but good things to say, but I can't see him being Bird-like. I can see him being more Nate Green like, with more ability to score and take over a game.
