It still bothers me that there is no seating on the north side of the field. I understand that the old student section (I am talking when it first opened in 69, I think) was not safe, but it looks so second-class to have seating on just one side. It would add to the appearance if they added even 1,000 seats for the visiting school. Just saying.

What wasn't safe? Bleachers like that are in use all over the country. One parent doesn't control their kid, and the former athletic administration caves and removes the bleachers. Oh well, they were preparing to dump the football program anyway...still makes me mad...

ITF, Apparently, they can be VERY unsafe. I would have to assume that they were not a high quality stand to begin with because believe it or not, they were actually "condemned" by whoever checks them for safety and were deemed unrepairable. Once the school knew they really couldn't repair them, they were forced to take them down.

Those old bleachers were very unsafe when I was on campus in the last half of the '60's. I know--I was on them. They were bad. For that matter the permanent side of MS was in sad shape too, but much better than the bleachers.

They took those stands down because a kid fell.....

from the top row and the kid's parents were going to sue the university. ISU had the stands checked by engineers and they were ruled to be unsafe.

From talking to people who were on board at ISU when those stands were first erected, they weren't put there to be permanent seating. Those were supposed to be temporary stands until the rest of the cement seating area was built. The north side was supposed to be a smaller version of the south side.

But money ran out and those new stands were never built. From what I was told, the fact that those temporary stands lasted as long as they did was a minor miracle.

Western Kentucky used to have a stadium setup exactly the same as ISU's is now up until recently. I remember going down to Bowling Green with the big stands on one side and nothing on the other (visitors) side.

Completely agree, it's a second-class-looking facility for a first-class team. Without seating on the north side of the stadium, it looks like a glorified high school stadium. Our players and coaches deserve better.

Very much looking forward to the development by the river. Can't come soon enough.

Yeah it's unfortunate that the stadium isn't even close to being on par with the majority of FCS stadiums, but it is what it is. The direction will obviously shift to the new stadium and with capacity still not even filling out right now at Memorial Stadium, spending money on new bleachers isn't really the best allocation of funds right now.

It will be a nice day when the school gets its new stadium constructed.

Bingo.

i believe if we start to build the new stadium within 10 years they shouldn't put in bleachers on the northside. but if it takes more than 10 years i believe they should atleast consider putting bleachers there relatively soon.

I agree. I'd almost move that back to if they don't plan in the next 5-7 years. This of course assumes that the football program will remain competetive and that the crowds will increase to the point that it makes sense to have a visiting side.

Put one on each side of the hill....

and then set up seating areas on the hill. Have people rent spaces for tailgating.

But why? Unless we start filling the seating we already have, why bother?

It could add a little pizzazz to the game. If it's something that people like it might result in increased attendance. The way I see it, it couldn't hurt. Parking fee for prime tailgating could amount to something over the season.
