All of this seems very cold blooded when put in writing. I suppose the personal relationships between coaches and players still enters into the equation as to a player leaving or not. It can't be all about money can it? Is the transfer rule still that a player has to sit out one year if it's their 2nd transfer? if so it's not likely we lose too many guys who came here as a transfer. Not at all opposed to player compensation but this is an awful mess it would seem.

So the money collected during the day of giving is not calculated into the Crossroads money? Correct?

Since others my not know, this probably would be helpful:

Give To Blue Day donations are collected by the school. Provided you donated to a specific sport, the donations are then routed to the specific program. Those funds can be used to pay for any program expenses from coaches salaries to logistics to uniforms/gear to software licensing. These donations are tax deductible.

For example, the team busses to games within a certain radius (can't remember the exact mileage number off the top of my head) but if they had more money, it's possible they could fly to the longer drives like the P5 and MM programs with more resources do.

Crossroad of Champions is a third party entity independent of the school that works with SANIL to solicit donations and NIL opportunities for Sycamore student-athletes. According to their website, between 85-90% of contributions go to the athletes after administrative overhead. These donations are not tax deductible.

For example, if you owned a business and wanted several of the basketball players to come out for an autograph signing, you would reach out to the SANIL rep and they would work in coordination with Crossroads to try to make that happen.

Depending on how the current legislation against the NCAA shakes out, I think you could eventually see NIL move to the school level and become another wing of the athletics and fundraising office like the Sycamore Athletic Foundation currently is. You're already seeing some schools now advertising their collectives and direction supporters to make donations to them.

I don’t think it sounds cold. I think it absolutely enters into the equation.

I think the only 2 players that are currently playing major minutes that you would have to worry about are Larry and Avila. Considering Larry has spent his entire career here and has thrived under JS I would imagine it would take a pretty sizable offer for him to leave. If the core is going to stay intact I can’t see him wanting to leave this situation. But he’s being compensated now and he deserves to be compensated more in the future based again in loyalty to the program and flat out performance! As for Avila he’s likely going to field multiple 6 figure offers. But keep in mind he already took the things you suggested above into consideration this off-season in turning down a couple rumored 6 figure offers. So I think he and his family very much understand not only the relationship - but just the overall fit of his game with JS style of play has been the perfect match for one another.

But yes, because of transfer rules Conwell, Swope and likely Kent are here to stay barring something drastic like JS leaving or a player losing an immediate family member.

When it comes to in-kind (housing etc.) sort of donations it’s handled between Coach and donor directly.

When it comes to hard NIL dollars that’s basically JS deciding how he wants to allocate those funds. I think it’s safe to say that JS is trying to use those funds to reward players for performance and loyalty rather than use those funds to necessarily attract new talent. But he’s the final say in who gets what… Now, if a donor came forward and said I want to give $10k to _____ player they’re not going to turn that sort of a request down.

If the agency that handles our NIL collective has a third party arrangement if you will for a player to make an appearance at an event or a business wants to partner with a specific player then I think those $$$ are handled outside our collective and don’t count toward our reported total. For instance - If Robbie is getting $30k cash from our NIL, the agent/agency might have linked him up with other endorsements/appearances that pay money outside of the collective.

* I don’t think it’s “legal” for me to call up Robbie and say I’m an alum and a donor and I’m going to just give you $15,000 cash here is a brief case of money.

That said, I don’t know how the NCAA is policing this stuff - I think that’s more of an NCAA/NIL question than an Indiana State specific question. I think InState is trying to abide by the rules and control this as much as they possible can so as not to be out-of-step with any rules or violations. Can’t speak to other schools and collectives.

Hope that helps. I’m not expert on this not pretending to be just wanted to share my perspective on where things stand.
This could be simplified if the NCAA would put a cap on the amount any one player could receive.

They did but only for foreign players. That is why Purdue played Alabama in Edey's home town in Canada. He got the gate for the game to give him more compensation as a way around the rules. I am sure that game was dangled in front of him to get him back last year instead of going pro.

NCAA really has opened Pandora's Box!

And Pandora's box keeps getting opened even wider! A coach can't buy a kid a cheeseburger, but a school AKA a consortium can buy everyone cars?!?!?!?!

I am sure an SEC school will soon top this. Maybe a yacht or a mansion comes to mind!

This NIL shit has to stop!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Keep in mind this is a different deal than the earlier "football team only" deal
