BOSTON -- Northeastern University is dropping its football program after 74 years, saying it's too expensive to maintain.

President Joseph Aoun and the board of trustees endorsed the move Friday after a two-year review of the Boston school's sports programs by athletic director Peter Roby.

The program's 87 players and 10 coaches learned of the program's demise Sunday night at a meeting on campus with Roby, a day after the Football Championship Subdivision team (formerly Division I-AA) won its final game 33-27 at Rhode Island.
The Huskies won their final two games to finish 3-8, their sixth consecutive losing season.

The school will honor team members' athletic scholarships.

Northeastern, which began playing football in 1933, had an all-time record of 289-364-17.

The school made the announcement on its Web site Monday.

According to the statement, Roby made the initial recommendation.

"The decision is consistent with the university's strategic approach to prioritize programs and invest in signature strenghts," the school said.

The school recently renovated Matthews Arena, home to its hockey and basketball teams, at a cost of more than $10 million.

Huskies football hasn't had a winning season since 2003, when it went 8-4. It's record since is 20-47. Northeastern has played since since 1933, with the exception of the war years from 1943-1945.

According to The Boston Globe, the team averaged fewer than 1,600 fans per game at Parsons Field this season.

"Our goal for athletics is to achieve sustainable excellence in all areas," Roby said in an open letter to the Northeastern community, according to the statement. "We do not define success merely through wins and losses. Instead, we recognize that success comes from creating a positive student-athlete experience. The primary motivation for this decision was based on the significant obstacles to providing this experience for our football players."

In 1997, Boston University, which played at the same level as Northeastern, disbanded its football program.

According to the statement, a committee including trustees, faculty, students, alumni and donors has been studying the athletic programs since early 2007.

"Ultimately it was determined that elevating and sustaining a competitive Division I football program would require additional multimillion dollar investments on an ongoing basis," the statement said. "A broad consensus developed behind discontinuing football and focusing future resources on programs -- both academic and non-academic -- where the university can achieve and sustain leadership."

Not to be one taking pleasure in the picking of the bones....

of a dropped program...but maybe we can get some transfers from there.....some guys who could come right in and play.....

Man, Tom, that's low. Just kidding, I already looked at their roster and stats. Two guys kind of jump out. A redshirt Freshman QB (Carroll) from Pennsylvania that started 6 games and threw for 850 yards and 7 TDs, and a redshirt Freshman offensive tackle (Wallace) from New York that's 6-6 285. The rest of their starting O-Line were seniors. They also had a pretty big Soph LB from Mass. May be hard to get some of them to move west, but certainly worth a call.

I'd certainly look into it...make a few calls.....

I know we did that a few times in the past...when Dennis was the head coach....where they would look at programs that had been dropped for possible transfers....and you're right....I assume that most of their kids are from the east and northeast....and would probably prefer stay someplace closer to home....but you never know...unless you look into it.......

Sad but the reality of it

Always sad to see another team shuttered but the resourcing involved in maintaining a successful program make it damned difficult.

In a completely unrelated note; I think I read recently that North Carolina spends $13-14M on the MBB program ALONE.

We have film on Northeastern already from our game against Youngstown State. They played them early in the year, don't remember any players from Northeastern because I was watching Youngstowns offense and didn't pay much attention to the Northeastern Defense.

hey tell me this?

Why in all the world would these kids consider transfering to ISU? These kids are from the east, would love to stay there, and would NOT come to a program that has not had a winning record for almost 20 years? The dead program might beat ISU right now.

It just doesnt make any sence to even think about this?

Their worst player might be ISU's all american

If someone is an all american they are an all american regardless of where they transfer. I suppose that's why they call it all american rather than All Northeastern.

Roberts is an excellent athlete, and could be a very good WR or DB, but not a QB. He had a couple of nice games filling in, and was able to get a couple of scores running the ball. This team needs to be able to pass the ball, however, and unfortunately this will not be something that Ryan can "learn". All you need to do is look at the conference passing stats http://www.mvc.org/football/stats/ind.pdf to realize that we need more production at that position.

The QB listed at the top of the stats has less game experience in college at QB than Ryan. This is not a knock on Ryan's ability to help the team--he has been a quality player, and because he is a "team first" kid, he's accepted going from one side of the ball to the other, then back and forth to different positions on the offensive side. I'm hoping he can move back to a position that is better for him, and assuming we get a true QB, better for the team.

What I know is Facts about your ISU football program! This = 3 winning years since 1984
That year (1984) was 9-4. Other than that, the program is dormate! Why would I send a kid to play at Indiana State for football?

Listen-my background is as of a student who is at ISU now, I grew up in TH and had family members play at ISU and in different sports there. I want a good football team at ISU just as most people do, but this wont happen any time soon.

Hammer...why so negative.....

Just tell me that???? Can't you try to be positive? Just don't like Trent Miles? What's the deal?????? Somebody step on your toes??? Do something to your Wheaties? Why the constant negativity?

You have never seen a program that has been down get better? I

Yeah hammer...your not much of a fan...You get mad at people for demeaning you when you demean something people are a fan of on a fan forum...You are probably one of those people who enjoy starting crap to see what people say...

The biggest problem with Indiana State University. The one thing that has driven me crazy my time here. Is that people say they want us to be good and succeed. Yet they are the ones that continue to bad mouth us and say we will never get better. Im not really sure what we did to make them so mad, except to work hard and do the right thing on and off the field. Last I checked we dont get on academic websites and make fun of people who studied as hard as they could for a biology test and talk trash and make fun of them for failing. That being said, those fans and students that DID come to all our games, not just to see the streak end but to actually support us and appreciate the work we do, they are the part of Indiana State that I love and will always miss. There arent many but the ones we have are amazing and we appreciate them.

PS Whoever the fan/student was that was always yelling that they would fight the officials, I think I laughed everytime I heard it.

Trying to hold my anger in....

Thanks Tom

If you want a good football team why dont you do something about it?? I have no problem if you wanna walk-on and see what it takes to compete at a D1-AA level, and see how long you last, I would love to see it...But there is no need to bad mouth the team..if you noticed about 75% of our team was underclassmen last year...and for our senior, they gave everything they had on every play...you couldnt ask for anything more from Dan, Donye or AB etc.. But my point comes down to this..If u think the program is so bad and they players suck and whatever else you think come out for the team, spend a week at summer camp or a week at practice and see what its like.
