Mr. Kevin

The Blue Level
This team has got to stop shooting itself in the foot. It seems that any time they have the opportunity to make themselves look good, they end up somehow doing the exact opposite. On a night when they have a chance to move up in the MVC standings and when a Miami team that they beat totally dismantles the #1 team in the country, we go out and have a clunker against a team we should have dominated from buzzer to buzzer. I don't know if this is coaching having our men unprepared or if our guys begin to believe their own hype after a few wins but for us to turn into an elite Valley team, we can't have these games. It's time to get back to business and take it to UNI and shock the Shockers next week. Let's get it together boys.

I would agree with what you said above. However, I do have a question, do many of you think we have exceeded expectations this season? Going in, I wasn't for sure how well they would do with all the new guys and to be honest, I am a bit surprised in how they have played so far against some good teams. Just wanted to see what everyone else's thoughts were in regards to this.

Go Sycamores!

I agree! So frustrating! We beat ourselves! Illinois State didn't beat us. We weren't ready to play from the start again, missed layups, free throws, etc. Normally these things win you these ball games. We acted like we didn't want it. There was NO flow to the offense at all. It looked at times like they had never played together before. Don't understand it.

I think, so far, they have exceeded my expectations. I think that fans that get on here and complain about losing a conference road game need to wake up and quit whining.

I think SSOM handles losses well. He ran track and knows that you don't always do your best and you can also do your best and still lose.

A lot of people on here do not understand athletic competition. Do you all realize that Ill St wanted to win that game last night?
How many of you think our players are trying to miss foul shots?

Last night duke lost a road game, Creighton lost a road game, etc etc. We were an 8 pt dog last night because of the HCA.

Samo last season...did well (2-1) in the Old Spice ESPN Classic in Orlando...upset eventual SEC Champion (yes, they beat UK!) Vanderbilt IN NASHVILLE, then the floor cave-in. Those OTHER "Eveready Bunnies" keep on going while our batteries go dead...we're destined to be the MVC "Lone Ranger" unless things start changing.

I''m with you Bankshot. There are those that want to sugar coat everything all the time. I am so tired of the excuses & let's wait till next year mentality from some. Butler sure doesn't EVER feel that way........even when they are in a so-called down year. Maybe, just maybe ISU isn't recruiting tough enough players? Huh?????

It all comes back to coaching. The coaches aren't getting the guys ready to play. Free throw shooting hasn't improved. Our offense hasn't improved. Guys are out of position on defense. This team lacks the fundamentals. I'd like to see a practice to see if they really do work on these things.

Butler is a fine example but Butler also lost last night... On the road. Tough to win on the road in college athletics, matters not what sport you play.

For those of you that expected us to win this game last night - sorry, you should have known better. I've missed 2 games/picks all year and I haven't missed since January 2. This team isn't wayyy ahead of expectations like some you have wanted to believe. Sure they've shown flashes - but Hawaii was a month ago now people, go ahead and get that weekend out of your head when trying to use it as a predictor for conference outcomes, espcially on the road.

Should we have played better? Should we make free throws? Should we take better care of the ball? All a big time, "hell yeah" all at once now, "hell yeah". IL State (although they haven't looked like it all year) was picked in the top 3 in the Valley - you aint just going to go on the road and beat teams like that very often.

Should we expect our team to win as fans? Yeah in a perfect world I think we'd all like the Sycs to be at that point. We are not - face the facts and get over it. We are just fans - we have no control on the outcome.

No, it comes down to EXECUTION. Coaching is ABSOLUTELY part of it; BUT if a PLAYER doesn't EXECUTE, it flat doesn't matter how well the coach scouted, taught, prepped and planned.

Players PLAY
Coaches COACH
Gen Managers/Ath Directors MANAGE/DIRECT
Fans CHEER/BITCH/YELL/MOAN

Gibb's comments after their loss to Drake last night:"It's an effort thing. It's a concentration thing, and it's unacceptable for us to come out and play like that," Gibbs said. "We've just got to change our attitude."
His comment holds true for the Sycamores.

I was hoping for . 500. Bad thing is that if the wheels come off we could still drop to that level.

Ya, 'Backer...gotta admire your self-admission. FYI, ISU SUCKED last night, and IL St was just terrible. The ugliness of the game was a byproduct of BOTH squads, which based on last night's performance, will fight it out this season for MVC doormat UNLESS dramatic changes are in store.

I don't think the wheels are about to come off. History shows us that January is a bad month for Indiana State basketball. Our losing streaks generally happen in January, there is much gnashing of teeth and wailing on Sycamore Pride, and it is usually about as crappy a month for ISU basketball as the weather outside. As I think back over the past 10 or so years, it has almost always been January that bites us.

The good news is that for at least the past five or so years, February has been kind to our Sycamores. It seems that, for some reason, the team gets a second wind in February and starts to play better. Some years, A LOT better. It kinda reminds me of that great quote from a preacher whose name I cannot remember - "It's Friday - but SUNDAY'S A COMIN!"

Our January has been pretty good by historical standards, for us. We just have to keep the faith bretheren! It's January, the team is doubting themselves. But February's a comin'. It's January, the fans are restless and talking bad about our team, but they forget - February's a comin'! It's January, and the rest of the MVC is writing off our Sycamores again, but they don't know - FEBRUARY'S A COMIN'! THAT'S RIGHT MY BROTHERS - FEBRUARY'S A COMIN'! All together now - FEBRUARY'S A COMIN'!!! :overheated:

After every loss there is a counseling/venting session on here. I find it amusing if only for its predictability. It makes sense to talk about those things which need to be corrected, but the expectations I don't get. This team hasn't done enough to earn high expectations, and to simply want to will them to improve is pointless.

How do I post a new thread?

Just got my account set up and cannot find the "Post New Thread" button. Haven't been able to get a reply from Jason the administrator.

Looking forward to joining the conversation.

Thanks,
Fife

So what. After EVERY game, one of the coaches says that.

Hey, I know we all want to win all of the games, but I want to remind you that in 78, with Bird, we lost 7 road conference games.
In 2000, we lost 5 and in 2001 when we beat OK in the NCAA, we lost 7 road conference games.

I never have problems losing if I felt like we played a good game. My issue is with the inconsistency of our offense right now as I pointed out in the thread I created earlier today.
