Our woke president has done a poor job in many things. She could care less about school traditions and making things fun for students and alumnae. She has ruined homecoming, is largely responsible for declining enrollment, in addition to not supporting the Greek System, who's alumnae are active in attending our football and basketball games, AND contribute money. I go to every home basketball game and was very disappointed with the elimination of the SPARKETTES. I am an alum from the mid-seventies. When I was in school, many of our good Indiana High School dance enthusiasts, wanted to come to ISU and be a Sparkette.
Many of our administrators are not happy with this sudden elimination of a 60 plus year tradition. I had a long conversation with someone in our Athletic Department about this. Here are several reasons why we have what we have today. Covid changed a lot of things. Extra-curricular activities dried up during the pandemic. From Resident Hall and Fraternity intramurals to things like the debate club, Spanish Club, you name it. Students sat in their dorms and apartments and would not participate in much of anything outside of class. Being able to field a cheer squad and a good Sparkette dance team became an impossible task. Another big issue is that upwards of a dozen cheer leaders have been seriously injured just in the last year with these huge pyramids, stunts etc. Parents have sued the Universities where this happened and, in all cases, these lawsuits were settled out of court. Many big colleges have enormous athletic and investment funds as we all know to ante up and pay these settlements. ISU and the foundation would be wiped out if something like this happened.
I went to the Butler game a week or so ago with some friends, and I counted 36 cheerleaders (7 of whom were men) and about 21 pom pom girls. I like our pep band, but if you have ever been to a Butler home game, their pep band is worth the price of admission. I have to admit that the feel and atmosphere in Hinkle tells you that you are at a big time college basketball game. We can emulate this, but it's going to take students and administration to change things.
