The White Level
I was thinking about the strength of the Valley, and at the time I was a supporter of the MVC bringing in Loyola (to replace the departing CU), however I've definitely changed my mind.

Loyola, at best, has been so-so to just not good. The near future of the Ramblers looks like they will be a lower level MVC team. The move to grab the Chicago market by adding Loyola has been a bit of a joke, as the Ramblers are barely a blip on the radar of the Chicago sports media.

Even when the MVC's best teams visit LU's Gentile Center, the attendance is absolutely an embarrassment. We were all sold on the large resources that LU would be investing in their program, and the Ramblers were going to do big things in the Valley. Well, color this longtime MVC fan as skeptical to say the least.

So maybe it was a huge misstep by the Valley. Just wondering who could/would have been a better choice to increase the strength of the Valley?

I'd say Valpo, I know they're not great at all sports, but they'd at least offer better basketball, and fan support, than what we're getting from Loyola at this point.

And we do play them the next 3 years, 2 away and then one home.

Well it should be noted that all fans of teams in any conference are not automatically assumed fans of that particular conference or any of the teams in that conference. The only reason it adds to the conversation is I have no bias for the rest of the conference at all.

So from the perspective of Indiana State I really don't mind it at all. Loyola is within reasonable travel distance for Indiana State and that is a plus. We have enough long road trips to Northern Iowa and Wichita State not counting some of the non conference road trips we end up making. We have also fared fairly well record wise against Loyola as we are 6-2 all time. So anytime we are better than a team in our conference on a consistent basis I am happy with them as an add. It's important not to forget that Indiana State is not a team that factors in the at-large conversation so I really don't bleeping care about adding a team that helps conference sos, rpi or any of that other crap.

I don't have enough information to speak toward the Chicago market impact or lack of...

Lastly I'm not a fan of the MVC, I'm a fan of Indiana State. Did I mention that?!

Are you suggesting that ISU should become "independent," given the purported absence of any conference "value?"

Other than the TV market, the Big10 certainly didn't get much from adding Rutgers to their conference. That will always be a head scratcher. As for Valpo it seems they are doing just fine where they are right now. Loyola doesn't make any difference to me either.

Climber are you not cutting down on a team that is equal or better than we are at least in basketball ? Until we dominate them in W/L record, attendance, etc. we should welcome them.

I believe valleyclimber is a Wichita State fan so he/she has that covered.

No doubt his post had an agenda attached to it...

The problem is, the Wichita State agenda and the Indiana State agenda are largely different agendas. So attempting to find or convince Indiana State fans that Loyola has some how been bad for the league or bad for Indiana State is ridiculous. As if we should be in favor of the league adding another team the caliber of Wichita State?! Because that would help us out soooo much. Add another 2 conference losses per season on to our record, real nice idea. But we should be okay with it because the MVC gets stronger and that is a good thing for us... Farce!

Do you really think that Loyola has that "national recognition" today? Depending on a person's age thkey might think of Loyola Mary Mount. You recognize Hank Gathers don't you?

No, mainly because Loyola Marymount is always written as Loyola Marymount. The other three Loyolas usually have the state in parentheses... Though I see Loyola (IL) without the (IL) at times... The Baltimore and New Orleans schools always have the state included, they're quite a bit smaller that the Chicago school

Loyola is a fomrer NCAA champion

Loyola provides the MVC with a former NCAA Division I tournament champion. That must be worth something.
