When I worked at ISU, we worked with the business department....

the marketing department and the journalism department. But in recent years, I've heard that those departments haven't been as response to working with the athletic department. As for the reason why they have been reticient, I have no idea. Hope they can get that going again.

Not sure if any read the whole article, but the last paragraph is telling that the dynamics of college athletics are continuing to change at a rapid pace with increasing private sector involvement.

"We had one school that actually threw out the idea, 'What if we privatize the whole athletic department?'" IMG College's Dyer says. "We didn't know quite how to respond to that because we don't necessarily think that's the model for the future. But when it comes to commercial activities and revenue-producing activities, if we're not in a particular discipline there, then we'd certainly look at possibly getting into it."

It's not a bad idea at all. Especially if you have a sports management program you can utilize. Getting that type of sales experience is certainly an asset for any sports management student and will provide them with a framework of skills upon graduation.

very nice promo. would be pretty sweet if we had 10,000 season ticket holders. i would love to see ISU get some commercials like this.

It will come, we just finally got some good news from our marketing Dept. 10 of the 11 regular season home games on TV and then a decent promo so I am happy

Our biggest obstacle is the demographics of Terre Haute. Although the TH Chamber of Commerce advertises TH as the largest retail center in West Central Indiana, that alone does not create a favorable marketing climate for our athletic programs.
The facts are: 1. West Central Indiana is the least populated section of the state.
2. This section is also the poorest in Indiana.
Also, remember NDSU and SDSU don't have to compete with the likes of Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame and even Ball State for coverage.
At this point, we are probably better off spending money on recruiting good atheletes and paying our coaches decent salaries as opposed to spitting into the wind with some expensive marketing program. It is what it is.

I would say that falls perfectly in-line with traditional ISU procedures. I'd say we shouldn't waste our time on a capital campaign either.

I do agree that IU, PU and ND will get the lion's share of football fans, but there's a reason IU has a billboard in TH advertising IU football.

No but we have UND a FCS member 68 miles up the interstate, University of Minnesota 230 miles down the Interstate, Minnesota Vikings 230 miles down the interstate, Minnesota State University a DII school in Moorhead, MN 6 miles away, Concordia College in Moorhead MN a DIII school, Wisconsin isnt all that far off along with Green Bay. The fact is no matter where you are marketing is huge and programs like NDSU, UNI, SIU, UMASS, APP, Montana all have competition for fans no matter where you are. Everytime this comes up thats the first thing people say is we have no Competiton and its not true.

Come here and see all the Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas gear those are all potential fans that just want to watch football and if they are new to the area and see the promo just may say hey lets go. Its not a waste of money

230 miles is alot different than 51 miles down the road.

how many BCS schools are 230 miles away from us? Notre Dame, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Cincinnati?, Northwestern, Louisville, then you got Butler, St. Louis, Ball state, IUPUI, IPFW, Evansville, Valpo, illinois state, southern illinois. then theres Chicago - Sox, Cubs, Bears, Bulls. St louis - Rams, Cardinals. Indianapolis - COLTS, Pacers. Cincinnati - Reds, Bengals. those should of all be within 230 miles from us. those are just off the top of my head. now i love your posts tjbison and respect your opinion but there is noway that schools in montana, south dakota, north dakota, idaho, etc. have the same kind of competition we do for fans. i'm not trying to make excuses but it's a different ballgame downhere.

Well ISU is not the only FCS school in a highly populated area, and its the wasting money on marketing idea that just blows my mind. Your AD and Athletic Dept has a shell in the chamber for grabbing new fans and generating revenue and getting asses in the seats considering your in the top 30 pre season polls, finished above .500 for the first time in i dont even know how many years and you guys are telling me they should just be happy with mediocre crowds and not "waste" money on advertising, i guess if the current fan base is happy then fine, but talent comes from money and selling tickets and alumni donations and thats part of the Marketing Depts. job.

oh yeah i agree with you, we should be marketing the crap out of our athletics right now. it would be money well spent, we desperately need fans in the stands to take our athletics to the next level. lets say we put out a commercial like yours and we only get 50 season tickets holders because of it. we have a good year, they tell their friends then that turns into 100 season ticket holders the next year, and so on and so on. who knows maybe some of them would then buy tickets for basketball. i believe marketing on that kind of level will be huge for our school.

TJ is right. To suggest that spending money on marketing is a waste is asinine. We don't have much $$$ to spend, but we should work every angle we can to fill the stands. We should look at what ISU has done in the past and do the opposite. To quote a marketing guru, "You gotta tell 'em. Then you gotta tell 'em again. Then, you gotta tell' em you told 'em"

As I mentioned in another thread, I personally wouldn't waste money advertising on traditional mediums because most of them are dying and the ROI is not that great. I'd use the coaches and players and create a set of videos and have them go viral like Megan did for the hoops team. It's cost effective as it would be a "soft dollar" approach since those folks are on payroll.

There are also hundreds of other ways they could get out in the community and get people to games. How about having the Sycamores in attendance and hooting/hollering at the THN/THS/WV/NV Jamboree? During a break get them down on the field and have them ask the parents to come support them and have ticket tables around the stadium. We have quite a few local kids on the team, so introduce those kids and make it known -- should be an easy sell. You could do the same thing at the VCYFL games.

I still think the coaches need to go around to the fraternities/sororities and ask them to start coming to the games as well. There are literally hundreds of things they could do that are cheap/free to advertise.

This is true that is why I suggested a couple of years ago to buy advertisement in high school athletic programs it is very cheap in comparison to other mediums and it hits your target market.
