Per TH Trib today, looks to be Perish and Tonyan in a battle for the #1 QB position. Wouldn't be shocked at all to see Tonyan emerge as the #1 here - I think he fits what Sanford is looking for. Time will tell.

Personally I thought Perish did a fine job last year in his first year. He should get better protection this year and you'd think that would help improve his accuracy down field. If he has developed a better feel for when to throw it away and when to try and fit one in I'd be happy to see him get the nod. Then you can bring in Tonyan in certain "situations". Maybe 2 and short kinda opens up the play book. You put two runners like Tonyan and Bell in your backfield at once I think it puts a ton of pressure on the D.

Your thoughts??

I will start by saying that I agree that Perrish was good last year, considering what he had to work with. He could be just fine with more protection, a year of experience, and an offensive scheme that isn't quite as bland (read: easy to figure out) as what we had last year.

I'm excited to see what Tonyan brings to the table. NSF had said last year (and he knows a whole lot more about this stuff than I do) that Perrish would be good, but Tonyan would be a star. Ever since I read that, I've salivating to see him on the field. And we've got him for four more years. Should be fun.

At this point, I'll go with whatever Sanford thinks. He's done all the right things so far, so I can't wait to see what we look like come fall...

that's the way I see it too. The competition for the strating gig should make both of them a little better. I hope either of them will be supportive of the other no matter which one starts.

Screw that. I hope whomever doesn't get named starter gets pissed and takes it out in the weight room, in practice, in film study and strives to make himself better to take that job. Support is for bras.

Seriously though, these sort of things are MUSIC to my ears. Do you know how long it's been since we've had legit competition at positions? This is a sign that the program is continuing to move along and getting stronger. Love it.

Competition makes everyone better. On a side note;it has to be bitter for the Lancaster kid who beat out Tonyan late in the year last year and was a close to being put in against South Dakota (according to members of last years staff) when Perish hurt his throwing shoulder. Good luck to all and let's hope all the Sycamores have a quick learning curve.

Don't let the article fool you - if someone doesn't get that job they are going to hate it and be pissed. These kids are use to playing - if your a backup you know you still have a role although it's reduced. These kids aint the type of kids who are up for, "friendly competition" - they are as competitive as it gets.

Are you sure it wasn't more of the fact that Tonyon was a redshirt and it would have been a waste to burn up a year over a game or two?

I agree that they'd probably be pissed, but the difference is that these are all quality character kids, and we wouldn't be seeing guys disrupting chemistry or quitting in a huff. This is the best QB situation we've had in the six years I've been watching. I'm looking forward to the spring game and how things develop over the summer and in fall camp!

That's what I mean by supportive--heck yes, they will all work their tails off because they want to be #1. That's what is going to make this the most competitive QB race in years.

There has been way too much of that at the QB position. That said, I'd rather they quit than be a disruption.

I'm also glad we didn't burn up the redshirts for Tonyan or Lancaster. It's nice to have some depth.

I have heard nothing but great things about Robert Tonyan and what he can do on the football field. Perish had a decent year last year and did as much as he could. However I believe Tonyan could take that extra step by putting the program even further on the map. The combination of Tonyan's speed and quickness along with the arm he has on him could do some serious damage. Put him in the backfield with Shakir Bell and defenses will be afraid to come to Terre Haute.

We can't get teams to come to Terre Haute as it is. That's why we are going to Tennessee state or something like that.
I hope we can kick some serious butt this fall.
