Reality check

WANTED: Passionate Sycamore Fanatics. That You?

Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

I hear variations of this ISU bashing constantly at work and in many different social venues. Being pissed or dismissive about it isn't going to get anyone anywhere. It's going to take many, many people (many more than read this message board) stepping up and taking the initiative to wear their Sycamore Pride on their sleeves.

This is it ^ Right here, read this and we can just move on from this discussion. When your at the game on Saturday (if your at the game) and you see an opportunity to stand up and cheer for the Sycamores, then freaking stand up. Don't worry about the people behind you - stand up and cheer for your school, don't worry about being to noisy, support your school.

Look at it like this - it's the one setting in the world where you can yell at the top of your lungs happy or mad and you won't be judged by it, trust me you wont. The only thing they will say about you is, man that guy is nuts and that guy LOVES Indiana State. I want people to know that about me, some people aren't stand up and yell people? I've seen plenty of laid back personalities become unlaid back at an official - put that energy into your cheering and stay on the officials, they need some encouragement as well.

I border on obnoxious about Indiana State athletics and frankly I don't care...

Quick story (i'm in the mood):

I'm 13 years old and I'm going to basketball games with my parents (season tickets) and a guy across the way (he's moved around over the years) would always be standing up during timeouts, urging people on - I would describe him as a demonstrative clapper or an emphatic clapper, it's as if this guy was clapping for the entire Hulman Center because these people in the Hulman Center they like the comfy seat a little to much.

I'm still going to games today and I still see this guy doing the same thing as when I was 13 years old. I just met this guy for the first time in my life (although he was very recognizable to me over the years) at the MVC Tourney in St. Louis. The guy is LoyalAlum - he LIVES for Indiana State athletics, I've personally witnessed it since I was a little kid. BE LIKE THIS, SET AN EXAMPLE FOR PEOPLE ON HOW TO SUPPORT SOMETHING WITH ALL YOU HAVE!

You guys sound like the UNI fan board about 4-5 years ago. We were always frustrated at the lack of student/alumni loyalty and support, fortunetly for us that has changed(thanks to a National Championship run and Kansas) and I would say without those UNI is in the same boat. You guys have a great oppurtunity here to really make a name for yourselves in the State of Indiana in that all three, PU, IU,ND are all down this year and if you guys continue to step it up and go HEY ITS NOT WEIRD TO SUPPORT A WINNING TEAM as UNI has done Things will turn around. You guys are starting to get there but it takes MANY years and alot of blood, sweat, and tears to get there, and by no means do I mean that UNI is there but we have come a long way from being the "suitcase" college people called us just 5-6 years ago when I was at UNI. I am excited for the future of Indiana State football, hell we need someone to step into SIU's place and who better then you(just don't be thinking you will start beating us)

How about a LoyalSycamore Club.....to be a member, you have to REALLY.....

support the Sycamores through acts, speech and deeds. You ought to see the looks that I get here in Indy whenever I wear Indiana State stuff. I had to take some good-natured ribbing about the Sycamores losing to Northern Iowa Sunday prior to the Colts game. But when I explained what happened at the game, with Bell going out with 145 yards IN THE SECOND QUARTER, and the fact that the Sycamores trailed by a touchdown with about four minutes to go in the game, or the fact that Indiana State's defense had a goal line stand at their own 1 on four straight plays, then they begin to see the light a little bit.

I talk Indiana State here in Indy all the time. I wear Indiana State here in Indy all the time. My car has an Indiana State license plate. I have an Indiana State flag hanging on my back window of my car. My basement man cave is all decked out in Indiana State memorabilia. I have two old lockers from Memorial Stadium's football locker room in my basement.

And if all goes well, my son-in-law and daughter-in-law are buying a once popular bar on the west side of Indy which will become the official hangout of Sycamore boosters.

I can't count the number of times people have told me to sit down! lol I even had a guy (wearing green) sitting behind me when we played IU who told me to quit standing up. Needless to say, I had a few words with him! lol

DEFINITELY more people need to stand up and cheer and get into the games. It's insane that they don't. :krazy: I've never ever gotten that. Oh well, one fan at a time, right? We'll get 'em!

I can top that. Last season, at the free ticket game, I stood up to cheer a made three (not an unusual thing for me to do...) and I suddenly felt a hand grab the back of my shirt and literally pull me down into my seat! I turned around and some old fart (no offense to the OFC here:bigsmile:) told me to stay in my seat. I had a few choice words for him, and told him if he touched me again I'd have him thrown out. I've never been so mad in my life!!! He moved down a few seats, and I continued to stand.

BTW, I asked about standing, and the ushers (who you all know are like Nazis, so I figure this answer is actually correct) told me that you are allowed to stand in front of your seat as much as you want, and no one can "make" you sit down. You paid for the seat, and you have a license, basically, to the space where you sit - SO KEEP ON STANDING UP!!!

I had a student behind me once tell me, "If you don't stop standing I will get security, it's ridiculous." to which I stated, "Go ahead make my day."

To this point - I'm like dad that guy right their is standing (LoyalAlum) dammit I'm standing up and cheering for that made free throw!! Well the guy behind me, it's actually Eleven's (member here) father in-law I believe? That right Eleven? He would always tell me to sit down, well I would turn around and glare it him - like you gotta be kidding right? Did you miss that free throw? Well if so sorry - me standing up should give you some indication that he made it right? I think he was just mad (to this day) that I caught all Blimpe Subs, T-shirts and basketballs thrown in that direction and because of that - Elven's daughter NEVER got anything! It was like the bottomless pit in front of him, hands like Reggie Wayne! lol

In all seriousness Eleven and his family all still sit directly behind my parents and have become great Sycamore friends of ours over the years! Lucky for them I can't afford seats down in that area!!! hahah They are great people, once they realized that I wasn't TRYING to obstruct the vision - I was just trying to be like LoyalAlum everything was cool!

Moral to all stories shared here today - show your pride, stand up - someone some place might be watching and do it with you!

Holy cow, that would be awesome. Indy needs a STATE bar. I realize you may not be able to divulge too much since it's not finalized, but what part of the west side?

Too bad that rowdy crowd of Indiana State fans who showed up for the Purdue game in Conseco last year can't make it over to TH for most of the home games....the 3,000 or so ISU fans that were there, were louder than the 5 to 6,000 Purdue fans with their band and their Cheerleaders.

Who were all those ISU fans anyway....they rocked....and weren't afraid to show their Sycamore pride!!!

SSOM, funny stuff! I've clearly taken over the helm of being loud and proud in that section...all of those people in that row, and the row behind us- have been in those seats for over 40 years...they have done their share of standing and yelling during that time.....they just leave it up to the younger fans now!

I saw that crazy guy near center court also..finally had the chance to met him last year, and found out that he's a Sycamore Pride member..

Ps, what kind off gentleman swipes prize after prize away from a little girl???

HAHAH! Man I was relentless in going after prizes in my day. It wasn't really about the prize, just the satisfaction of winning the prize - it allowed me to be noticed. My parents didn't give me a lot of attention as a kid.. lol

Yes, that's my father-in-law... and I hope you know that he's kidding! He absolutely doesn't care that people stand and cheer..

Oh I'm talking wayyyy back in the day - when I was a little kid. And I don't even know if it was him then, might have been a friend of his. He's a great guy, I enjoy sitting down in those seats with you all - great people, close to the action and great atmosphere.

Yes, I can blame students. It's YOUR fucking school. If you don't have pride in the school YOU selected, pack your shit up and find the door. I can understand if you just aren't a sports person, but a lot of these people are off supporting Notre Dame, Indiana, Purdue, etc.

THOSE SCHOOLS DIDN'T WANT YOU. If they did, you wouldn't be at Indiana State OR you liked Indiana State better so start representing like it.

Tell me this... what else are students doing on a Saturday afternoon? Outside of working, I can tell you that they're doing jack shit. Why? Because if I didn't attend a football game, I was watching football on TV. That's what happens on Saturdays.

Jason you should run for office. One vote from me. I never understood not supporting your school. When I was a kid in Bloomington, I loved IU basketball. Heck who wouldn't? Kent Benson, Scott May, Quinn Buckner, etc. That was a great team. When I left home to attend INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY in 1979, I stopped cheering for IU and I BECAME A SYCAMORE.

I was at a meeting today, and sat next to an old friend who is also an ISU grad. I asked him if he was going to Homecoming, and he said no. He asked if I was, and I said, "Of course. I've got football season tickets now. You do know that we're really good now, don't you?" He looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears. Now, this guy is a good alum - he doesn't bash ISU, but he had NO IDEA that our football team didn't suck. I told him we were ranked 19th in the country and talked to him about Bell's exploits, and you could have knocked him over with a feather.

Perhaps the alumni association could send out something letting alums know about the success of our athletic teams right now. Older alums just aren't used to it...
