I would like to add that ISU gave Schellhase a quick firing and we ended up with Greene and Locke. I have always been a Lansing fan. I think he will recover from all this, it just doesn't happen overnight at a mid-major. We aren't 4-22 and we never will be under Lansing. One of those 4 win seasons (was it Greene's or Locke's?) had ISU finish a game against Wichita with only 2 players on the floor and down 40 points. That was rock bottom.

I recall that game in TH...didn't the 6'8" Alabama HS All-state DE for ISU (DARIN LILES (?) TKO a Shox player...- "The BASH near the 'Bash"...

Schellhase was fired as much for his alcohol issues as coaching success no?

Both Greene and Locke had 4-win seasons, hard to tell which was the poorer coach but both are certainly in competition for that title.

Landini saw 1st-hand the impact of a losing Men's Basketball team upon the morale of his school. Had Locke been an assistant anywhere else but IU, he'd never "fallen into" the ISU HC position. Landini was hoping to transfer the "spirit" of IU Basketball to ISU by using the state-wide "halo" of RMK upon Locke's hiring. Don't forget, this also put a wedge between LB & ISU which wasn't resolved for years. LB was on the ISU "Search Committee" and was supporting another coach, and his input was virtually SNUBBED.

Funny, but Locke's hiring also drove a wedge between his life-long friend -RMK. Seems that RMK wasn't too happy about Locke's intrusion into his "once sacred" recruiting turf.

Can't remember now but seems like it was a young up and coming Italian guy from the east coast named Calipari or Pitino or something like that?

I don't recall the name but I believe he was from the University of Delaware/

Ya, that sounds right. This article says "he TURNED DOWN" an offer from ISU - funny how things get twisted around on resumes and "sports news" articles. The truth was that Steinwedel made the "final 5" list. Unfortunately, my notebook on this infamous ISU era (I call it the "Dark Ages") is still down in FL in storage. Otherwise I'd have this "list" for you.

The irony of all this is that Steinwedel played w/ former Ron Greene ISU Asst. Coach AL PERRY in '74-75 @ MS St. under KERMIT DAVIS Sr. See:

http://www.forwhomthecowbelltolls.c...istory-101-kermit-davis-fired-by-the-students

Greene coached one (1) yr. there (1977), when he was voted SEC "Coach of the Year." He quickly opted to return to his alma mater @ Murray St., which was his job until hired by ISU in '85.

In a nutshell, the gung ho effort by localz closely tied to the ISU program (yes Turk Roman...I'm talking 'bout youz and your useless "bar fly" chums) to bring a "good ol' Gerstmeyer Tech boy back home FAILED MISERABLY. What they overlooked was 1) Greene had NO recruiting ties after being gone from Indiana for 2 decades and 2) "Honor Guard" preferential policy is DIVISIVE among the fan base and 3) ISU is NOT UCLA. Utterly ridiculous attitudes by Greene & his Staff (excl. Mike Calhoun) in program mgt.
